Chapter 333: Ellie Learns the Truth
At that moment, Ellie’s face had gone completely white. Her eyes were opened wide, and tears kept spilling down both sides of her face. They dropped onto the phone screen, then ran over her cold, stiff fingertips.
Galvin stepped toward her at once.
“Ellie!”
He bent down, snatched the phone out of her hand, and shut the screen off completely.
But it was already too late. Ellie had seen everything.
She had seen Helena tied to the chair, the wounds all over her body, the men surrounding her, and the moment Helena used her own body to protect the baby inside her stomach. Every one of those images had already pushed its way into Ellie’s head. There was no way to wipe them away now, no matter how badly she wanted to forget.
Galvin tossed the phone to the person standing behind him, then immediately pulled Ellie into his arms.
Her body was so cold that it frightened him, and both of her shoulders kept shaking without stopping. Galvin held her as tightly as he could, but even then, he still could not make her calm down.
“Don’t think about anything else.” His voice turned urgent. “Ellie, look at me.”
Ellie did not respond. Her eyes were still lowered toward the patch of ground in front of her. Her lips trembled as if she was trying to say something, but her throat felt blocked, and she could not force the words out.
Galvin lifted her face with his hand.
“Look at me.”
A long time passed before Ellie’s eyes slowly moved up to his face. But the moment she finally saw Galvin, her tears began falling even harder, one after another, until she could barely see him clearly.
“It’s all my fault…”
Galvin frowned at once.
“No, it isn’t.”
“It is my fault.” Ellie suddenly grabbed the front of his shirt and held on tightly, as if it was the only thing keeping her from falling. “If Helena hadn’t helped us, she never would have been dragged into any of this.”
Ellie cried so hard that her entire body curled inward. She could no longer control her breathing. Each time she tried to draw in a breath, a sharp pain went through her chest. The images she had just seen in the video kept coming back into her mind, over and over again. Helena tied to that chair. The wounds on her body. The men around her. The way she had curled herself around the baby she was carrying.
Ellie could not stop seeing any of it.
She had already been reunited with the man she loved and her innocent child, while Helena was still fighting for her life after going through such a terrible nightmare.
The difference between them was almost more than Ellie could bear. She felt as if she had stepped over Helena’s blood just so she could take back her own happiness.
“I didn’t know…” Ellie cried until her voice became choked and broken. “I really didn’t know she had been forced to suffer through things like that. When she helped me meet you, all I could think about was that I might finally be able to stay by your side. I never thought Kevin would misunderstand her, and I never imagined Andrea would choose her as the person to take revenge on. I only knew how to think about myself. I hurt her…”
Galvin gripped both of her shoulders tightly, and his voice came out hard.
“That’s enough.”
He was not angry with Ellie. He was only afraid that if he let her keep talking, she would completely fall apart right in front of him. Ellie’s body had still not recovered from the times she had been shocked with electricity. Her mind was also in a very weak state. The doctor had warned him again and again that she could not be allowed to suffer any more shock or emotional strain.
That was why he had hidden what happened to Helena from her. He had never expected that, in the end, she would still find out everything.
Galvin wanted to raise his hand and cover her eyes. He wanted to make her forget all the images she had just seen, as if none of them had ever entered her mind. But he could not do that. There was nothing he could do to erase them for her.
All he could do was pull Ellie into his arms and wrap both arms around her as tightly as possible, holding her like he was afraid she might break apart the moment he loosened his grip.
“This is not your fault. The person who caused every tragedy that happened to us is Andrea.”
Galvin’s hand slowly stroked Ellie’s hair. The moment he spoke Andrea’s name, the look in his eyes turned cold again.
“Helena’s tragedy was not caused by you. It began with Andrea’s greed and madness. He wanted to have you, wanted to take Wyndham Group for himself, and wanted revenge on both Kevin and me. Helena was only an innocent person he chose to use as a tool. You cannot take the blame that belongs to a madman and place it on yourself. There was nothing wrong with you coming back to Ansel and me. Andrea was the one who was wrong. Kevin also has to take responsibility for what he did. But none of this was your fault.”
Ellie looked at Galvin through the tears covering her eyes. The guilt still felt like a hand wrapped tightly around her heart, squeezing until she could barely breathe.
Maybe she had not been the one who directly hurt Helena. But everything Helena had suffered really was connected to the fact that Helena had once helped her. As long as Ellie thought about that, she could not forgive herself, no matter what Galvin said.
“Gal…” She held his hand tightly, afraid to let go. “Helena… is she all right?”
That question made Galvin fall silent.
Alex had just called to tell him that the doctors had managed to save Helena’s life, but she was still in a deep coma and had shown no sign of waking up. The baby inside her only had a very weak heartbeat left. It could stop at any moment, and no one knew how much longer the child could hold on.
Galvin did not want to tell Ellie the full truth about Helena’s condition. But when he looked into her eyes, he knew he could not keep lying to her either.
“The doctor said she is out of immediate danger for now, but her baby is still in a very dangerous condition. They said the chance of saving the baby is almost zero.”
Tears poured from Ellie’s eyes again. She grabbed Galvin’s arm with both hands and looked at him with desperate pleading in her eyes.
“I want to see her. Please take me to the hospital, all right?”
“Ellie, you need to rest.”
“I have to go.”
