Chapter 226: Damon's Return

DAMON'S POV

The restlessness starts as a whisper in my bones, a subtle itch beneath my skin that I can't quite shake. I'm three hundred miles away at Whitmore University, supposedly focused on my advanced biology midterm, but my wolf is pacing restlessly beneath the surface of my consciousness, hackles raised and senses on high alert.

Something is wrong. Terribly, fundamentally wrong.

The bond I share with Serena—that invisible thread of connection that ties our souls together—pulses with an energy that makes my teeth ache. It's not pain, exactly, but something darker. Something that tastes of guilt and confusion and secrets that cut like broken glass.

I abandon my textbook mid-sentence, my professor's voice fading to background noise as every instinct I possess screams at me to go. To find her. To protect what's mine.

The drive back to Crescent Moon should take four hours, but I make it in three, my foot heavy on the accelerator as my wolf claws at my ribcage, demanding speed. The familiar landscape of my hometown blurs past my windows—autumn trees stripped bare by November winds, fields brown and dormant, the sky heavy with the promise of the season's first snow.

Thanksgiving is still two days away, which means my surprise return will catch everyone off guard. Including Serena. The thought of seeing her face light up when I walk through the door should fill me with warmth, but instead, that nagging sensation in my chest only intensifies. My wolf's agitation bleeds through our connection, making my hands tremble against the steering wheel.

By the time I pull into the driveway of the Blackthorne family estate, dusk has begun to settle over the trees like a heavy blanket. The house stands before me, its familiar windows glowing with warm light, but something feels different. Foreign. The very air seems charged with an energy that makes my supernatural senses recoil.

I kill the engine and sit in the gathering darkness for a moment, trying to identify what has my wolf so on edge. The scent of approaching winter fills my nostrils—dead leaves, frost, the metallic bite of cold air—but underneath it all is something else. Something that makes my lip curl back in an involuntary snarl.

Another male.

The realization hits me like a physical blow, and I'm out of the car before I consciously decide to move. My boots crunch against the gravel driveway as I stride toward the front door, every muscle in my body coiled tight with territorial fury. The scent grows stronger with each step—clean soap, expensive cologne, and underneath it all, the unmistakable musk of arousal.

My hand freezes on the doorknob as a sound drifts through the heavy wood. Laughter. Serena's laughter, bright and genuine in a way that makes my chest constrict with an emotion I don't want to name. But it's not the sound of her joy that stops me cold—it's the deeper rumble that follows it. Male. Intimate. Possessive.

The wolf inside me goes absolutely still, the way a predator does in the moment before it strikes. My vision sharpens, my hearing becomes hyperacute, and when I turn the doorknob and step into the foyer, every supernatural sense I possess is focused like a laser beam on the sounds coming from the living room.

"—can't believe you actually said that to Professor Williams," Serena is saying, her voice warm with amusement. "The poor man looked like he was going to have a stroke."

"He deserved it for giving you such a hard time about your thesis proposal," comes the reply, and I recognize the aura immediately. He is the hybrid who's been circling my mate like a vulture since the day he transferred to Crescent Moon High.

My footsteps are silent as I move through the house, years of supernatural training allowing me to approach without detection. The living room door is slightly ajar, and when I peer through the gap, the sight that greets me sends a surge of pure, primal rage through my system.

They're sitting on the couch together—too close, too intimate, too comfortable. Serena is curled against the cushions with her legs tucked beneath her, wearing one of my old university sweatshirts that hangs loose on her smaller frame. Her blonde curly hair is pulled back in a messy bun, and her cheeks are flushed with laughter. She looks beautiful. Relaxed. Happy in a way that makes my wolf want to howl with jealousy.

Gabriel is leaning toward her, one arm stretched along the back of the couch behind her shoulders, his fingers close enough to her neck that he could touch her skin with the slightest movement. Their textbooks and notebooks are spread across the coffee table in front of them, but neither of them is looking at their homework. They're looking at each other with an intensity that makes my vision go red around the edges.

"You know," Gabriel says, his voice dropping to that low, intimate register that makes my hackles rise, "when I first transferred here, I never expected to find someone who could challenge me intellectually the way you do."

Serena's smile is soft, almost shy. "I could say the same about you. You see things from angles I never would have considered."

"We make a good team," Gabriel murmurs, and the way he says it—loaded with meaning, heavy with implication—makes something snap inside my chest.

I don't remember deciding to move. One moment I'm frozen in the doorway, watching this intimate scene unfold, and the next I'm striding into the room with all the controlled fury of an apex predator marking his territory.

"How touching," I say, my voice cutting through their conversation like a blade through silk.

The effect is immediate and devastating. Serena jerks away from Gabriel as if she's been burned, her face going pale and then flushing crimson with what I can only assume is guilt. Gabriel, to his credit, doesn't flinch, but I can see his muscles coil with tension, his supernatural reflexes preparing for the confrontation he can sense coming.

"Damon!" Serena scrambles to her feet, the textbooks on her lap tumbling to the floor in her haste. "I—we weren't expecting you. Thanksgiving isn't until—"

"Thursday, I know." My eyes never leave Gabriel's face as I speak, cataloging every micro-expression, every tell that might give away his intentions. "But something felt wrong. My wolf wouldn't settle. Now I know why."

Gabriel rises slowly from the couch, his movements fluid and controlled in the way that only comes from supernatural grace. He's tall—not quite as tall as me, but close—and his lean frame is deceptively powerful. His dark hair falls across his forehead in artful waves, and his green eyes meet mine without flinching. There's challenge there, and something else. Something that looks suspiciously like possessiveness when his gaze flickers to Serena.

"Damon," he says, inclining his head in what might be greeting or might be mockery. "Welcome home."

The casual way he says it—as if he belongs here, as if he has any right to welcome me into what should be my territory—makes my wolf snarl with barely contained rage. The sound that rumbles from my chest is purely animalistic, a warning that any supernatural creature would recognize and respect.

Gabriel's eyes flash with something that might be his own wolf rising to the surface. The air between us crackles with tension so thick it's almost visible, two predators sizing each other up, testing boundaries, preparing for war.

"Gabriel was just helping me with my AP Chemistry homework," Serena says quickly, stepping between us with her hands raised as if she can physically hold back the violence she can sense building. "We've been studying for hours. It's completely innocent—"

"Innocent." I repeat the word like it tastes bitter on my tongue, my gaze never leaving Gabriel's face. "Is that what you call it when another male has his hands all over my mate?"

"I wasn't touching her," Gabriel says, his voice dangerously quiet. But there's steel beneath the calm facade, and I can smell the lie on him like smoke.

"Your scent is all over her," I snarl, taking a step forward. My hands are clenched into fists at my sides, and I can feel my claws pressing against my fingertips, begging to be released. "Your arousal is still hanging in the air like a fog. So don't stand there and lie to my face about what's been happening in my absence."

Gabriel's composure cracks just slightly, a flash of something feral crossing his features. "Maybe if you were here more often instead of running off to your precious university, you wouldn't have to worry about other males appreciating what you're neglecting."

The words hit me like a physical blow, and the last thread of my control snaps. I'm moving before I consciously decide to attack, my supernatural speed carrying me across the room in a blur of motion. But Gabriel is fast too—hybrid fast—and he meets me halfway, his own predatory instincts kicking in.

We collide in the center of the room with enough force to rattle the windows, supernatural strength meeting supernatural strength in a test of dominance that's been building since the moment Gabriel first set foot in Crescent Moon. His hands close around my throat just as mine find his, and we strain against each other like titans, neither willing to give ground.

"Stop it!" Serena's voice cuts through the haze of rage and territorial fury, high and desperate. "Both of you, stop it right now!"

But neither of us is listening anymore. This is about more than just a girl now—this is about pack dynamics, about hierarchy, about the fundamental need to establish who the alpha male is in this territory. Gabriel's eyes have gone completely wolf, the green bleeding to gold as his hybrid nature asserts itself. I can feel my own transformation trying to claw its way to the surface, my human form struggling to contain the fury of my beast.

"She's mine," I growl, my voice barely human. "She's always been mine. You're nothing but a pretender, a hybrid mutt who doesn't know his place."

Gabriel's grip tightens on my throat, his claws extending just enough to draw tiny beads of blood. "Mine now," he snarls back, and the possessive claim in his voice makes me see red. "She chose me. She kissed me. She wants me in ways she never wanted you."

The words hit me like silver bullets, and for a moment, my grip loosens in shock. Serena's sharp intake of breath confirms what Gabriel has just revealed, and when I look at her over his shoulder, the guilt written across her face tells me everything I need to know.

She kissed him. My mate—my bonded mate—kissed another male. The betrayal cuts deeper than any physical wound ever could, and my wolf throws back its head and howls with rage and heartbreak that threatens to tear me apart from the inside out.
