PART 2: THE LONG-DISTANCE STRAIN

Chapter 211: The Goodbye

SERENA'S POV

The phone call comes at dinner on a Tuesday evening, shattering my world into a million pieces with just a few simple words.

"I got the scholarship," Damon says, his voice a mixture of excitement and something that sounds dangerously close to panic. "The full ride to Blackwater University. They want me to start next week."

My fork clatters against my plate, the sound echoing through our dining room like a gunshot. Mom and Dad look up from their meals with concern, but I can barely see them through the sudden blur of tears that spring to my eyes.

"Next week?" I whisper, my voice barely audible even to my ears. "But we thought you had until the end of summer. We thought we had more time."

"I know, I know," Damon says, and I can hear the strain in his voice through the phone. "My dad has been pushing me to accept it immediately. He says opportunities like this don't wait, that I need to grab it now or risk losing it forever."

The practical part of my mind knows he's right. Blackwater University is one of the most prestigious schools in the country, and the scholarship Damon has been offered is worth more money than most people see in a lifetime. But the part of me that loves him, the part that feels like it's dying with every word he speaks, wants to scream at the unfairness of it all.

"Can I see you tonight?" I ask, my voice cracking with the effort of holding back sobs. "Please, Damon. I need to see you."

"Of course," he says immediately, and the relief in his voice tells me he's been hoping I would ask. "I'll pick you up in an hour. We need to talk about this properly."

The hour that follows feels like the longest sixty minutes of my entire life. I pace around my room like a caged animal, trying on different outfits and rejecting each one, as if the right clothes could somehow make this goodbye less devastating. Finally, I settled on the blue sundress that Damon bought me for my birthday, the one he said brings out the color of my eyes.

When I hear his familiar knock at the front door, my heart starts racing so fast I'm afraid it might burst right out of my chest. I rush downstairs, pausing only to kiss my parents goodbye and promise them I'll be careful.

Damon stands on our front porch looking heartbroken, his usually perfect hair disheveled as if he's been running his hands through it repeatedly. When he sees me, his face crumples with emotion, and I throw myself into his arms without hesitation.

"I'm so sorry," he whispers against my hair, his voice thick with unshed tears. "I'm so sorry this is happening so fast. I never wanted it to be like this."

"It's not your fault," I tell him, even though part of me wants to blame someone, anyone, for this cruel twist of fate. "Your father is right. You have to take this opportunity."

We drive to our special place by the lake in silence, both of us lost in our thoughts and fears about what the future holds. The setting sun paints the sky in brilliant shades of orange and pink, creating a backdrop that's almost too beautiful for such a sad occasion.

Damon spreads a blanket on the grass near the water's edge, and we sit down together, our bodies automatically gravitating toward each other like magnets. For a long moment, we just hold each other, breathing in the familiar scent of his cologne mixed with the clean smell of lake water and summer air.

"We'll make this work," Damon says finally, his voice fierce with determination. "The distance doesn't change anything between us. Our bond is stronger than a few hundred miles."

"Is it?" I ask, voicing the fear that's been gnawing at me since I hung up the phone. "What if you meet someone else? Someone who doesn't come with all the supernatural baggage and divine complications?"

Damon pulls back to look at me, his hands cupping my face with gentle intensity. "Serena, look at me," he says, waiting until my eyes meet his before continuing. "You are my mate. My soul recognizes yours in ways that have nothing to do with proximity or convenience. There will never be anyone else for me."

"But what if—"

He silences me with a kiss that tastes like promises and desperation, his lips moving against mine with a passion that makes my toes curl in my sandals. When we break apart, we're both breathing hard, and I can see my desire reflected in his dark eyes.

"No what-ifs," he says firmly. "We love each other. Everything else is just details we'll figure out as we go."

As the stars begin to appear in the darkening sky above us, we talk about everything and nothing—our fears about the future, our dreams for what comes next, and the million little things we'll miss about being together every day. Damon tells me about his plans to study business and eventually take over his family's company, while I share my uncertainty about what I want to do with my life now that my supernatural nature has complicated everything.

"I'll call you every night," he promises, his fingers tracing lazy patterns on my bare arm that make me shiver with pleasure. "And I'll come home every weekend I can. This isn't the end of us, Serena. It's just a new chapter."

When the air grows too cool for my sundress, Damon wraps his jacket around my shoulders, and the familiar scent of him envelops me like a hug. We end up lying on the blanket together, staring up at the star-filled sky and talking in whispers about all the times we'll have when he comes home to visit.

"I love you," I tell him as we watch a shooting star streak across the darkness above us. "I love you so much it physically hurts."

"I love you too," he replies, rolling onto his side to face me. "More than I ever thought it was possible to love another person."

Our kisses grow more desperate as the night wears on, fueled by the knowledge that we won't be able to hold each other like this for weeks or maybe even months. When Damon's hands begin to roam over my body with familiar intimacy, I don't stop him. Instead, I help him remove the barriers between us, needing to feel as close to him as physically possible before he leaves.

We make love under the stars with a passion and intensity that feels like we're trying to pour our entire souls into each other, creating memories that will have to sustain us through the lonely nights ahead. Every touch, every kiss, every whispered endearment is charged with the bittersweet knowledge that this is our goodbye.

Afterward, we lie tangled together in the aftermath of our passion, my head on his chest and his arms wrapped around me like he never wants to let me go. The steady rhythm of his heartbeat beneath my ear is the most comforting sound in the world, and I try to memorize it for the dark days ahead.

"Promise me something," I whisper against his skin as the first hints of dawn begin to lighten the eastern horizon.

"Anything," he responds immediately, his fingers combing gently through my hair.

"Promise me you won't forget how this feels. Promise me you'll remember us like this when you're surrounded by new people and new experiences."

"I promise," he says, his voice thick with emotion. "I could never forget this. I could never forget you."

The drive back to my house happens too quickly, even though Damon drives slower than usual, clearly trying to delay the inevitable. When he pulls into my driveway, neither of us moves to get out of the car immediately.

"This isn't forever," he says, turning to face me in the pre-dawn light filtering through the windshield. "I'll be back before you know it."

"I know," I say, even though every instinct I possess is screaming at me to grab him and never let him go. "I'll miss you every second until then."

Our final kiss tastes like tears and heartbreak and promises we hope we can keep. When I finally force myself to get out of the car and walk toward my front door, it feels like I'm leaving a piece of my soul behind in his passenger seat.

I stand on my front porch and watch as Damon drives away, his taillights disappearing around the corner like dying stars. The moment his car vanishes from sight, I feel something inside my chest stretch and pull, as if an invisible cord connecting us is being drawn taut across an impossible distance.

For the first time since we formed our bond, I feel truly, utterly alone.
