Chapter 164
"I am so sorry to cut my visit short, but an emergency has come up that I need to attend to. Please forgive me," I said, my voice tinged with regret as I picked up my car keys from the table. I took a step backward toward the door, glancing back at Tyson, who sat there with his brow furrowed in concern.
"I promise I’ll come back tomorrow to see you. Tyson, please don’t hold this against me," I added, hoping he would understand.
"Wait for me; let me walk you out," Tyson insisted, standing up and moving toward me with an earnest expression, not even pausing to hear my response. I felt a tightness in my chest—I didn’t want to keep him waiting, and part of me longed for the evening to linger a little longer. Still, I didn’t need an escort; I knew the way to my car well enough. The familiar path beckoned, but I could sense the warmth of his intent as he stepped closer, ready to accompany me into the driveway I had driven into for years. "Honestly, I really don’t want to overwork you, and I’d rather not have Mom on my case again; you know how unpredictable she can be," I said, glancing nervously at him while pointing back at Mom, who was sitting across the room with her eyes fixed on him. The intensity of her gaze made it clear she was watching his every move, and it filled me with a sense of unease.
He turned his head to look at her, and a light laugh escaped his lips, breaking the tension between us. When he looked back at me, his eyes sparkled with playful defiance. "I can see that Mom is keeping a close watch on me like a hawk," he replied, smirking slightly. "But don’t use her as an excuse to bolt off with some random stranger we haven’t even met yet. Let's be smart about this." I let out a soft laugh, the tension easing with the warmth of his playful banter. "Oh, come on, Tyson! You know me better than that. There’s no random stranger lurking in my life," I said, rolling my eyes playfully. The thought of some mysterious figure waiting in the shadows seemed absurd, and I could see the corner of his mouth twitching upwards as if he were about to crack another joke.
“But can you blame me for being cautious?” he replied, feigning a serious tone as he crossed his arms, the mock defense only amplifying the smile on my face. “After everything that has happened lately, a sister has to be careful.”
I shook my head, glancing toward our mom, who still observed us with that intent expression, her head slightly tilted, as if she were analyzing every exchange like it was a crucial scene in a play. “Mom’s not plotting anything, I promise. She’s just... being her usual self, and you know how she is about wanting to know everyone her children associate with.” I took a step closer to him, resting a hand on his arm. “You can relax. There’s no one, Ty. Just me and my life—boring as it might be.”
Tyson grinned, the tension between us dissipating completely now. His eyes sparkled with mischief, and I couldn’t help but think how much I appreciated our sibling banter. “Boring is good—keeps the strange men at bay,” he joked, his playful demeanor infectious. I chuckled again, and it felt good to share this light moment before I had to leave.
“I swear, if there were a strange man, I’d slip away from Mom in a heartbeat to introduce you. But alas,” I said with mock sorrow, “you’re stuck with a sister who is far too focused on her career to entertain potential suitors.”
Tyson laughed, shaking his head. “Well, if you ever find one, remember, I expect a full report. Privileges of being the only brother!” He stepped closer as we made our way toward the door, the comforting familiarity of our teasing almost making me forget the urgency of my situation.
As we reached the threshold, I turned to him, my heart warming at the thought of our indomitable sibling bond. “I’ll come back tomorrow, I promise,” I reiterated, feeling a swell of gratitude for his unwavering support. “And if you hear of any strange men, trust me—I’ll be the first to let you know.” With one last shared.
As I pulled into the grocery store parking lot, the familiar neon lights shone brightly against the evening sky. My thoughts wandered back to last night when we ran to each other and how good he looked. I hadn't been able to buy my groceries then, and now, here I was, getting a second chance—not just to shop, but to spend time with him.
I parked the car and gently collected my reusable shopping bags, feeling the cool breeze brush against me as I stepped out. The sun was beginning to set, casting a warm, golden hue over the parking lot. As I looked toward the entrance, I noticed Damon leaning against the wall, his hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket. When he caught sight of me, a relaxed smile broke across his face. “Hey! You made it,” he called out, his wave warm and inviting as I approached.
“Of course! I can’t turn down a free shopping spree,” I replied, allowing a teasing tone to mask the gratitude bubbling inside me. “Thank you again for offering to cover my groceries. You really didn’t have to.” He shrugged, a playful grin still lingering. “And miss the chance to spend time with you? Not a chance! Besides, after last night, it’s the least I could do. It was such a nice surprise running into you and I can't seem to be able to let you go.”
A rush of warmth enveloped me as we exchanged friendly banter, it felt effortless, like reconnecting with a cherished friend. “Alright, let’s get this shopping done before I end up craving pizza instead.”
“I’m totally on board with that,” Damon said with a chuckle. “But just think of all the ingredients we could pick up for a fantastic pizza night later.”
We stepped through the automatic glass doors and into the store, where the familiar sounds of rattling carts and cheerful shoppers created a comforting ambiance. I took the lead down the aisles, reviewing my list and checking off the essentials—fruits, veggies, and of course, a few guilty pleasures like ice cream and chips. Damon stayed close, chiming in with excited suggestions, his enthusiasm truly uplifting.
“Have you seen these new snacks?” he asked, holding up a brightly colored bag, his eyes sparkling with curiosity. “They look like they could change the game.”
“Only if you promise to share," I shot back playfully, adding a couple of bags to the cart. “Are you trying to steer me away from my healthy choices?”
"I swear, it's all about balance," he replied with a mock-serious expression, and I couldn’t help but laugh. The lightness of our exchange felt so comforting, like slipping into a warm embrace.
As we continued through the store, our conversation flowed effortlessly. We reminisced about our high school days, sharing updates about our lives in a way that felt intimate and genuine. With each laugh and shared story, the stress of the week seemed to melt away, leaving only a sense of ease and connection. Before long, we found ourselves at the checkout, and an overwhelming sense of gratitude washed over me. “Thank you again, Damon. This was a lovely surprise that I didn’t even know I needed.”
“Anytime,” he replied with a kind smile as we began loading the groceries onto the conveyor belt. “You know I love being there for you."
“You’re doing wonderfully at it,” I said, feeling a hint of embarrassment but genuinely thankful for his generosity. As we placed the last of the groceries into my bags, a warmth lingered in the air, a promise of more moments like this in the future. With everything packed, Damon kindly carried a couple of bags to my car while I retrieved my keys. “I guess pizza night is definitely in our future,” he said, leaning against the car with a hopeful grin. “Just give me a heads-up next time you go grocery shopping, and I’d love to join."
“I'll definitely hold you to that,” I replied, smiling back as we exchanged one last look. This small trip turned out to be so much more—it felt like the beginning of something beautiful, something that could blossom into more than just friendly grocery runs. With a renewed sense of hope and excitement, I hopped into my car, waving goodbye as I drove away, already looking forward to the next time we would be together.
