Chapter 242 Locking the Doors
Chapter 242 Locking the Doors
Sacheverell approached the table next. The Rogue King signed the parchment with a quick, fluid motion. He dropped the quill onto the stone and turned to me.
He took my hand, his long, agile fingers wrapping gently around mine. Sacheverell bowed at the waist, a graceful, sweeping motion. He brought the back of my hand to his lips, pressing a firm, lingering kiss against my skin.
"My Queen," Sacheverell whispered, looking up at me through his dark lashes. "The shadows belong to you now. We are yours to command."
The moment the Rogue King stepped back, the silence broke.
The crowd exploded.
It was not a cheer. It was a deafening, earth-shaking roar that tore through the mountain air and rushed down into the sprawling capital below. The generals drew their swords, raising the bright steel high into the air, the metal catching the sun. The merchant leaders clapped their hands, their joyful shouts mixing with the loud, triumphant blasts of the brass horns waiting on the lower avenues.
The era of division was truly dead. I had just claimed the entire world without shedding a single drop of blood.
I turned my head, finding Wex in the cheering crowd. The Alpha King was watching me, his golden eyes burning with a fierce, possessive heat that made my breath catch. He did not bow. He did not need to. We shared a soul, and through the roaring golden bond, I felt his intense devotion wrapping around my heart, pulling me tight.
The rest of the day was a beautiful, chaotic blur of celebration.
The grand procession wound its way down the winding mountain path and back into the rebuilt streets of Lycanthia. The sun slowly tracked across the clear blue sky, painting the capital in warm, bright light. The citizens danced in the central square, tossing flower petals and silver confetti into the air. We sat through endless feasts at the long tables set up in the merchant district, listening to the bards sing new songs about the light chasing the shadows away.
By the time the sun finally began to set, dipping behind the distant, green mountains, the sky turned a brilliant, bruised purple. Torches were lit along the main avenues, casting a warm, flickering glow over the white marble of the inner city.
My body was physically exhausted, my muscles aching from the heavy weight of the Crown of Stars and the long hours in the saddle, but my mind was racing.
We left the public celebration as the stars began to appear.
Wex and I walked side by side up the wide, sweeping steps of the Sovereign Palace. The newly built fortress was massive, a sprawling structure of pale stone, tall glass windows, and heavy iron gates. The unified guards stationed at the entrance immediately dropped to one knee, lowering their halberds as we passed through the grand archway.
The deep, booming sounds of the festival faded as we moved deeper into the quiet, cool corridors of the palace.
The golden bond connecting my chest to Wex’s was changing. The calm, steady pride he had projected all day was shifting, rapidly turning into something much heavier, darker, and incredibly primal. The liquid gold magic hummed with a fast, restless energy that sent a sudden rush of heat straight down my spine.
I glanced over at him as we turned a corner.
Wex was staring straight ahead, his thick jaw locked tight. His large hands were curled into loose fists at his sides, the thick muscles in his bare forearms twitching slightly with every step. The polite, restrained mask of the public Alpha King was cracking, revealing the fierce, untamed predator waiting just beneath the surface.
We reached the entrance to the Royal Chambers.
The long, quiet corridor leading to our private wing was guarded by Commander McKenna Leann Conaill and four elite Moon Guards. They stood at strict attention in front of the massive, double doors leading to our personal quarters.
Wex did not slow his pace.
"Dismissed," Wex commanded, his rough voice dropping into a low, rumbling growl that left absolutely no room for argument.
McKenna immediately stepped away from the door. She bowed her head sharply, gesturing for her guards to follow. "Have a peaceful night, Sovereign. Alpha King."
The heavy boots of the guards clicked rapidly against the marble floor, fading away down the corridor until we were completely alone in the dim light of the flickering wall torches.
Wex stopped in front of the massive double doors. He reached out with his large, healed right hand and grabbed the thick iron handles. He pushed the heavy doors open, revealing the dark, sprawling space of our private bedchamber.
He stepped back, waiting for me to walk past him.
I stepped over the threshold, my boots sinking into the plush, thick rugs covering the floor. The room was warm, smelling of clean linen and the faint, sweet smoke of the dying fire in the hearth.
The heavy doors slammed shut behind me.
The loud, sharp sound echoed in the large room, cutting us off entirely from the outside world. I heard the loud, heavy clack of the large iron key turning in the lock.
Wex pulled the key free and tossed it onto a nearby stone table.
He turned slowly to face me. The golden bond in my chest erupted into a wild, roaring inferno of pure, unfiltered desire. The tension from surviving the end of the world, the heavy weight of the crowns, and the long, exhausting months of rebuilding finally shattered in the quiet darkness of the room.
Wex took a slow, heavy step toward me, his golden eyes darkening into a deep, dangerous amber.
