Chapter 30

Chapter 30
Yola
As soon as they stepped through the portal to the Black Moon pack, her eyes landed on one of the men standing in front of the enemy. She felt the connection immediately, almost like he had touched her with a branding iron. He was already a part of her. She didn’t have to know anything else about him but that he existed. She took a deep breath as she moved toward the front of the line, weaving through her family to step out onto the front lines.
She silently begged Yuri to just come to her and let her help him. His eyes moved over her face curiously, watching her from across the field. She tilted her head, still staring into his beautiful silver gold-flecked eyes. Confusion moved in his eyes, and he took a step forward, making her mirror his movements. Bea put her hand on Yola’s arm.
“Where are you going?” She asked. “There’s nothing there.”
Yola turned her head to look at Jordan, breaking eye contact with Yuri. Before she could respond to Jordan, a small surge of energy snapped her attention back to Yuri. He was being held back by a few of the enemy vampires. Jordan cried out before Minton screeched. There were gasps all around her, and she vaguely heard Merlot talking to someone as her gaze remained fixed on Yuri’s.
Her body tensed up when Jordan moved to her side, slightly injured. Immediately, Yola leaned toward her to heal her. Jordan gave her a grateful smile as Merlot gave orders to charge. Yola let her dragon, Yari’s, wings out. Yuri’s eyes widened in awe, giving Yola the hope she needed as her team moved to the right while she moved toward Yuri to draw him away. He dashed forward toward her with several of the vampires on his heels. She slammed into him, wrapping her wings around him. The vampires started clawing and biting at her wings, trying to drag her wings from around him.
“Yuri,” she whispered.
He looked up at her. “Help me.”
The plea in his voice broke her heart, and she was instantly in kill everything mode. How dare they hurt him? Something was injected into her wing, and she pulled back, screaming as she started breaking the dragon’s bane down. Yuri’s eyes glazed over before energy surged around him. She reached out to touch him, and his image wavered in front of her. His face became nothing but shadows, making her crazy. She wanted her mate back, but she needed to get the vampires away from him. It was obvious they were controlling him.
She lunged at Yuri, and he sidestepped, sending her flying toward the vampires. Yari breathed out, and her flames licked along the ground before attaching themselves to the vampires. The vampires all screamed in agony as her fire quickly consumed them. Yuri growled at her as he pinned her arms to her sides. He glared down at her as he crushed her ribs with his grip. Energy swirled around them, cocooning them in a small, tight bubble of his power.
She felt him moving through her brain, searching for whatever he needed to force her into submission. His face rapidly changed, taking on the features of her entire family before sliding away back to nothingness when she didn’t have the reaction that he obviously was looking for. Even though she was struggling to breathe, she never looked away from his eyes. While he tried to break her sanity, she tried to strengthen their bond in an effort to get him to understand that she wasn’t there to hurt him.
She started to focus on his face and how she felt when she stepped through to see him. She tried to silently push her love and her need to be with him into him. For a second, his face flashed to his own, and she tilted her head back more. He shook his head almost violently, trying to dispel whatever trance was still lingering. He blinked, and the trance was fully back in place. He shook her angrily before throwing her to the ground. She cried out as the impact of hitting the ground sent waves of harsh pain through her. His eyes cleared for a moment, and he reached down for her.
“Help me,” he repeated.
She waited until he got close enough to thrust her hips up. She wrapped her legs around his neck, flinging herself to the right. He hit the ground, and she scrambled on top of him while he bucked wildly under her, trying to dislodge her. She let her hand shift into her talons, making his eyes widen. She quickly raked her claws down his face and chest before breathing fire out over him. He yelled out before his body started convulsing under her. She pinned him to the ground as she breathed even more fire out over him to soothe him. Slowly, his trembling stopped until he was lying breathless under her. She breathed her fire over him again, leaving him relaxed on the ground, inhaling and exhaling deeply. He opened his eyes as he raised a shaky hand to her face.
“You saved me,” he murmured softly.
She turned her face into his hand, pressing a kiss into it. “Yuri,” she purred.
He pulled her down to place an unsure kiss on her lips. She melted into him, kissing him back. She pulled back breathlessly.
“Are you okay?”
He nodded as his thumb moved over her cheek. “I am now.”
She pressed another kiss to his lips before getting up, also pulling him to his feet. She led him carefully around the people fighting, with Jordan, Johan, Minton, and Mayra flanking them, to where Jane stood protectively over Jackson, who was still unconscious on the ground. When they got there, she told the rest of her team to go help the rest of their family while she stayed with Jane to protect their mates. She touched Yuri’s face.
“We’ll talk after this is over. There’s so much to tell you. I just need you to trust me.”
He nodded as he linked their fingers together. “I trusted you the moment you stepped onto the field.”
