CHAPTER 72

Rossi.

The dim light of dawn filtered through the curtains as I watched Aurora sleep peacefully beside me. Her breathing was steady, and a small smile was playing on her lips. Despite the turmoil of the past few days, she looked serene, her strength a beacon of hope in the darkness.

As I lay there, thoughts of Ernesto’s text message lingered in my mind. It had arrived late last night—a simple yet cryptic message requesting a meeting to discuss important matters regarding the Gotti family. If he has concrete evidence and it is not a trap by him or Gottis, it will tip the scales in our favor. I also need to get back in touch with the informant I met up with the other day.

I knew I had to tread carefully. Ernesto’s alliances shifted like the sands, and his loyalty was never guaranteed. But if there was a chance he could help us defeat the Gottis, I couldn’t afford to ignore it.

Aurora stirred beside me, her eyes fluttering open. She smiled sleepily, reaching out to trace a finger along my jawline. “Good morning, Rossi.”

“Morning,” I replied softly, brushing a strand of hair from her face. “There’s something I need to tell you.”

Her smile faded slightly; she was concerned about replacing it. “What is it?”

I took a deep breath, searching for the right words. “Ernesto reached out to me last night. He wants to meet and says he has information that could help us take down the Gottis.”

Aurora’s brow furrowed, and her expression was wary. “Ernesto? Are you sure we can trust him?”

“That’s the thing,” I admitted. “I don’t know. He’s a wild card and unpredictable. But if there’s a chance, he can give us an advantage.”

She sat up, her gaze scanning mine. “I don’t like it, Rossi. He’s dangerous. He’s my cousin, and I don’t even trust him. What if it’s a trap?”

“It could be,” I conceded, my jaw set. “But we’re running out of options. We need all the help we can get.”

Aurora hesitated, chewing on her lower lip. “I understand. Just... promise me you’ll be careful.”

“I will,” I assured her, reaching out to caress her cheek. “I won’t take any unnecessary risks. We’ll figure this out together.”

She nodded, her eyes softening with understanding. “Okay. If you think meeting with him is our best chance, then I trust your judgment.”

I smiled gratefully, pulling her into my arms. “Thank you, Aurora. I promise to keep you safe, no matter what.”

She sighed, resting her head against my chest. “I know you will. Just... come back to me, Rossi.”

“I always will,” I whispered, pressing a kiss to her forehead. “I love you.”

We stayed like that for a while, drawing strength from each other’s presence. The weight of our situation hung heavy in the air, but there was a glimmer of hope now, a chance to turn the tide in our favor.

After a quiet breakfast together, I made arrangements to meet with Ernesto later that evening. Aurora insisted on coming with me, but I refused, wanting to keep her safe at our hideout. She reluctantly agreed, though I could see the worry in her eyes.

As the sun began to set, I kissed her goodbye, promising to return as soon as I could. She held me tightly, her words a whisper against my ear. “Be careful, Rossi. And trust your instincts.”

“I will,” I murmured, holding her close. “I’ll see you soon.”

With one last glance at Aurora, I left, the weight of our future heavy on my shoulders. Ernesto’s offer could change everything, but at what cost? Only time will tell.

As I drove to the meeting place, my mind raced with possibilities. Ernesto was a dangerous ally, but if he could help us defeat the Gottis, it would be worth the risk. I just had to stay vigilant, trust my instincts, and hope that this alliance would lead us one step closer to our freedom.

I parked my car in a secluded alley, the meeting point Ernesto had specified. The air was thick with tension as I stepped out, scanning my surroundings for any sign of trouble. Shadows danced in the dim light, and the sound of distant traffic echoed through the narrow streets.

Moments later, Ernesto emerged from the shadows, his presence imposing yet calculated. His gaze met mine, and for a brief moment, we stood in silence, assessing each other. Years of history and distrust lingered between us, but now, faced with a common enemy, a fragile alliance seemed possible.

“Rossi,” Ernesto greeted, his voice low and gravelly. “I’m glad you came.”

I nodded curtly, keeping my guard up. “Cut the pleasantries, Ernesto. What do you want?”

He sighed, a hint of resignation in his expression. “I want out, Rossi. I’ve been working for the Gottis, doing their dirty work, because they have something on me. Something that could ruin me.”

“Why should I believe you?” I challenged, and my tone was sharp.

Ernesto’s gaze hardened. “Because I’m handing you this.” He reached into his coat pocket and withdrew a small flash drive, holding it out to me. “On that drive are documents and evidence that could expose Gotti’s pharmaceutical empire for the fraud it is. That’s what Aurora’s parents died for.”

I hesitated, eyeing the drive cautiously. This could be a trap, a ploy to lure me into their grasp. But something in Ernesto’s demeanor—the desperation in his eyes—rang true. He was tired of being a pawn in their game, ready to break free.

“What’s in it for you?” I asked, my voice steady despite the turmoil within.

Ernesto’s jaw clenched, a flicker of defiance in his gaze. “Freedom. Redemption, if you will. I want them gone as much as you do, Rossi. We can take them down together.”

I weighed my options—the risk versus the potential reward. If Ernesto was telling the truth, this could be the break we needed. But if he was lying...

“We have a deal,” I said finally, reaching out to take the flash drive. Ernesto released it reluctantly, his expression guarded.

“Don’t make me regret this, Rossi,” he warned, his voice a low growl. “I’m putting everything on the line for this.”

“Understood,” I replied, tucking the drive safely away. “Now, disappear. We’ll handle the rest.”

Ernesto nodded once, a grim satisfaction crossing his features. Without another word, he melted back into the shadows, leaving me alone with my thoughts and the weight of his confession.

I returned to our hideout, my heart pounding with a mix of apprehension and hope. Aurora greeted me at the door, her eyes searching mine for answers.

“Well?” She asked, her voice barely a whisper.

I held up the flash drive, a flicker of relief in my eyes. “He’s on our side, Aurora. He gave us everything we needed to take down the Gottis. He said, It’s what your parents died for.”

Aurora’s eyes widened in disbelief. “After all these years!”

She began to get teary-eyed, and I pulled her close, feeling the tension of the day finally begin to ease. “We’re one step closer to ending this, Aurora. With these documents, we can expose their operation and cripple their empire. If you finish up what your parents started, your family will no longer have to fear them or be their pawn. We can do this.”

She smiled up at me, her hand resting against my cheek. “Thank you, Rossi. Now we have to do the right thing. End the Gotti’s, destroy them, for what they did to my parents and for the others they have hurt.”

I kissed her forehead, savoring the moment of victory, however fleeting it might be. "Yes, Aurora, we’re going to make them pay. Now, let’s see what’s on this drive. It’s time to bring justice to those who deserve it.”

Together, we plugged the flash drive into our secure laptop, the screen flickering to life with a trove of incriminating evidence. As we scrolled through the documents, plans began to form, with strategies taking shape. The battle ahead would be fierce, but with Aurora by my side and Ernesto’s unexpected alliance, we finally had a fighting chance.

The night stretched on as we pored over the evidence, mapping out our next moves. The weight of responsibility settled on my shoulders, but there was a fire burning within me—a determination to see this through to the end.

“We’re going to win this, Aurora,” I said quietly, glancing over at her. She nodded, her eyes shining with determination.

“We have to,” she replied, her voice steady. “For us, for everyone they’ve hurt.”

And as we prepared to take on the Gottis once and for all, I knew that nothing would stand in our way. Together, we would bring justice to those who had wronged us, and finally, we would be free from the shadows that had haunted us for so long.

The drive contained detailed financial statements and transaction logs spanning several years. These documents revealed irregularities, suspicious transfers of funds, and offshore accounts linked to key figures within the Gotti organization. It included Correspondence between high-ranking members of the Gotti family and their associates and provided insight into their business practices. Discussions about manipulating drug prices, falsifying clinical trial results, and bribing regulatory officials were laid bare.

Confidential research documents exposed unethical experimentation and shortcuts taken in drug development processes. There were indications of suppressed negative findings and manipulated data to expedite drug approvals.

Each file was meticulously labeled and cross-referenced, creating a comprehensive dossier that painted a damning picture of the Gotti family's operations. The evidence was not just about financial crimes but also about the moral and ethical violations that had plagued their empire.

As we scrolled through the documents, the gravity of their discovery sank in. This was more than just a means to bring down their enemies; it was a chance to expose corruption and restore justice to those who had been harmed by the Gotti family's ruthless pursuit of power and profit.

“This changes everything,” I murmured, his voice filled with determination as I looked at Aurora. “With this evidence, we can dismantle their entire operation.”

Aurora nodded, her expression steely with resolve. “We have to do this, Rossi. For every one they’ve hurt.”

With the flash drive securely in our possession, we began formulating their plan. Our next moves would be critical, navigating through treacherous waters of deception and danger. But armed with the truth, we knew they were closer than ever to achieving their ultimate goal: justice and freedom.
