Chapter 97
Chapter 97
Emily woke up the next morning to the soft rustle of papers beside her bed. Liam sat cross-legged on the floor, a mess of documents and photos spread around him like puzzle pieces. The early sunlight poured through the windows, painting golden streaks across the hardwood floor.
“Did you sleep?” she asked groggily, pushing herself upright.
He looked up at her with bloodshot eyes and a faint smile. “A few hours. I couldn’t stop thinking about what Nadia found.”
She swung her legs over the bed and knelt beside him. “The partner?”
Liam nodded. “It’s someone close. Someone who’s managed to keep their name off every official record, but left fingerprints in the money trail. Offshore accounts all tie back to one company: Elara Holdings.”
Emily frowned. “Never heard of it.”
“Exactly. It’s a shell,” Liam said. “But Nadia found a connection, a board member linked to both Elara and a few of Alex’s real estate projects.”
He handed her a photo.
Her breath caught.
It was Mr. Grayson.
Her former mentor. A man who once attended her high school graduation. A family friend.
“Grayson?” she whispered. “But… he’s harmless. He used to give me books when I was little.”
Liam’s jaw tightened. “He’s anything but harmless. He’s been laundering money for Alex for years. He kept the whole operation alive behind the scenes. And he knew about you. About all of it.”
Emily’s stomach turned. The betrayal felt personal. Sharp. “So what now?”
Liam stood and began gathering the evidence. “Now, we expose him. But we’ll need more. One leak isn’t enough this time. We take him down in court.”
“Will the authorities believe us?” Emily asked.
“They will if we show them what he’s hiding.”
By mid morning, Emily and Liam were sitting in a private office with Nadia, reviewing a plan of attack. Nadia’s team had already begun compiling dossiers for a formal indictment. But there was one piece missing: a witness.
Someone who had worked directly under Grayson.
“Actually,” Nadia said, clicking through files on her laptop, “there might be someone.”
She pulled up a photo of a woman in her early thirties with sharp features and wary eyes. “Her name’s Kira Moore. She used to manage one of Grayson’s shell company accounts before disappearing two years ago. Word is she left the country. But I have a contact in Morocco who says she resurfaced last week.”
Liam leaned forward. “Can we reach her?”
“I already sent someone. If she agrees to talk, she could blow the whole case wide open.”
Emily nodded. “I want to be there when she speaks.”
“Are you sure?” Nadia asked. “It could be dangerous.”
“I’m sure,” Emily said. “He needs to see that I’m not hiding anymore.”
Three days later, in a quiet villa outside Marrakech, they met Kira.
The air was warm and dry, the scent of spices lingering in the wind. Kira looked wary as she walked onto the terrace, sunglasses hiding her eyes.
“You came a long way,” she said, her voice raspy.
Emily extended a hand. “Because we need the truth.”
Kira didn’t take her hand, but she sat down.
“I kept quiet because I was scared,” Kira admitted. “Grayson’s not like Alex. He’s worse. He doesn’t scream. He whispers. And when you hear the whisper, it’s already too late.”
Emily shivered.
“I worked for Elara for five years. I moved money, erased names, kept things looking legal. But once I found out what it was funding, trafficking and blackmail, I ran.”
“Why now?” Liam asked.
“Because I saw your story, Emily,” Kira said. “And for the first time in years, I felt hope. If you could speak, maybe I can too.”
She handed them a folder. Bank statements, emails, hidden accounts all signed or linked to Grayson.
“This is what you need,” Kira said. “But be careful. He’ll do anything to stay hidden.”
Back in New York, armed with Kira’s testimony, Emily and Liam met with federal prosecutors. The case was moving fast now. Indictments were being prepared. Investigators swarmed Grayson’s known properties. The press buzzed with speculation.
Then one morning, it happened.
Mr. Grayson was arrested.
His mugshot was plastered across news sites. A respected philanthropist, now disgraced. His calm facade cracked as cameras captured his arrest outside his Manhattan townhouse.
Emily watched it unfold from her living room, tears streaming down her face. Not from sadness but from release.
Liam placed a hand on her back. “You did this.”
“No,” she said. “We did this.”
He smiled. “Ready to close this chapter?”
She nodded. “And start the next one."
The days that followed were filled with interviews, meetings with lawyers, and discussions about the long term impact of what they’d uncovered. Emily was offered a book deal, a speaking tour, and a position at a non profit supporting survivors of abuse.
She declined most of them.
“I want a quiet life,” she told Liam one night. “I want to heal, to write for myself. To build a future with you that isn’t always about survival.”
He kissed her gently. “Then that’s what we’ll build.”
They spent more time outdoors, walking in the park, cooking together, and finding joy in simple routines. The city didn’t feel so loud anymore. It felt like home again.
One evening, as they stood on the rooftop watching the sunset, Liam took her hand.
“I’ve been thinking,” he said.
“About what?”
“About forever,” he said, pulling a small velvet box from his pocket.
Emily’s heart stopped.
“I know we’ve been through hell. And I know we’re still healing. But I don’t want to wait for perfect. I want real. With you.”
He opened the box.
A simple, elegant ring shimmered inside.
“Emily, will you marry me?”
Her eyes filled with tears. Not from fear this time but from love.
“Yes,” she whispered.
And as he slipped the ring onto her finger, the past finally felt like it was behind her.
