Chapter 92

Chapter 92

The silence in the car was deafening. Emily sat beside Alexander, her fingers nervously picking at the hem of her dress. Outside, the city lights blurred past, but her focus was elsewhere—on the storm raging inside her. So much had changed in such a short time. Her secrets had unraveled, and now, nothing felt certain.

Alexander kept one hand on the wheel, the other resting on the gear, tapping in frustration. His jaw was clenched, his mind spinning with everything that had happened. He had protected Emily from the press, from his family, from the chaos. But now that everything was out in the open, he didn't know what came next.

"Are you angry with me?" Emily finally asked, her voice soft, barely above a whisper.

He didn’t respond right away. The tension between them hung heavy in the air, like a storm cloud about to burst.

"No," he said finally. "Not angry. Just... overwhelmed."

Emily looked down. Her fingers trembled in her lap. "I never wanted to hurt anyone. I was scared. I didn’t think anyone would believe me."

Alexander sighed deeply, pulling the car over into a quiet side street. He turned off the engine and looked at her. "Emily, you should’ve told me everything from the start. I’ve stood by you, fought for you. I still would’ve. But I can’t protect you if I don’t know the truth."

She nodded, tears pooling in her eyes. "I know. And I’m sorry. I was ashamed, and confused. And I thought maybe I could just bury it all."

He reached for her hand, gently curling his fingers around hers. "You’re not alone anymore, okay? Whatever happens next, we face it together."

Emily looked at him, her heart aching with the weight of it all. "But your family… they’ll never accept me. They’ll hate me."

Alexander gave a bitter chuckle. "They already do. That ship sailed a long time ago."

"Then why are you still here? Why are you doing this?"

His expression softened. "Because I love you, Emily. It doesn’t matter how complicated things get, I won’t walk away from you."

Her lips quivered as she stared at him. The words she had longed to hear for so long, he had just said them, and yet they terrified her. Because now, she had something to lose.

He leaned in slowly, brushing his lips against her forehead. "Let’s go home."
Back at Alexander’s penthouse, the atmosphere was calmer. The place had always felt intimidating to Emily, with its sleek design and cold marble floors. But now, it felt like a refuge. Somewhere the world couldn’t touch them.

Emily wandered to the kitchen while Alexander answered a few missed calls. She poured herself a glass of water, her hands still unsteady.

When he returned, his face was unreadable.

"That was my mother," he said. "She’s furious. She’s demanding a public statement from me."

Emily swallowed hard. "What will you say?"

He walked toward her, taking the glass from her hand and setting it down. "That you’re mine. That I stand by you. And that anyone who has a problem with that can walk right out of my life."

Her breath caught. "Alex…"

"No more hiding, Emily. I’m not going to pretend anymore. You and this baby, we’re my future."

She hesitated. "And if the press keeps dragging me? If your company suffers because of me?"

He cupped her face, his thumb brushing her cheek. "Then let it. I’d rather lose a company than lose you."

Emily leaned into his touch, tears slipping down her cheeks. It was too much. Too kind. Too good. She didn’t deserve it but she wanted it. Needed it.

They sat together on the couch, wrapped in a blanket of silence, but it was no longer a heavy one. It was comforting.

"Do you think it’s a boy or a girl?" he asked, his hand resting gently on her stomach.

Emily smiled faintly. "I don’t know. I just hope it’s healthy."

He leaned down, pressing a kiss to her belly. "They’re going to be perfect. Just like their mother."

She rolled her eyes playfully. "Flattery won’t fix everything, you know."

"Maybe not," he murmured, resting his head on her lap. "But it’s a start."

The next morning brought new headlines, flashing with images of Emily and Alexander at the charity gala. Gossip sites ran wild with speculations: Scandalous Mistress Turned Girlfriend? CEO Chooses Love Over Legacy.

Alexander had his PR team release a simple but firm statement: “I love her. I support her. That’s all anyone needs to know.”

It sparked mixed reactions, some hailed him as romantic, others called him reckless. But Alexander didn’t care. He’d made his choice.

Emily, however, felt the weight of it more intensely. Every time she opened her phone, she saw hateful comments, cruel words, judgment.

She tried to put on a brave face, but Alexander noticed the toll it was taking. He found her in the bathroom that evening, her eyes red, phone clutched in her hand.

"You shouldn’t read those," he said gently.

"They’re right," she whispered. "I’m just… a mistake."

He took the phone from her and set it aside. "No, Emily. You’re the best thing that ever happened to me."

She looked up at him. "What if I’m not strong enough for this? What if I can’t take the pressure?"

"Then I’ll carry it for both of us," he said. "You’re not doing this alone."

He held her for a long time that night, not saying a word, just letting her cry. And when the tears were gone, they lay in silence, her head on his chest, his arms wrapped protectively around her.
The next few days passed in a blur. Alexander arranged for Emily to see a top doctor, who confirmed that the baby was healthy. It was the first real moment of joy they had shared in what felt like ages.

Afterward, they celebrated with a quiet dinner at home. Alexander had cooked badly but it made her laugh, and that was all he wanted.

As they sat together at the table, Emily reached across and took his hand.

"I don’t know what the future holds," she said. "But I want to face it with you."

His eyes softened. "Then we’re already winning."

Outside the window, the city lights twinkled. Inside, Emily finally felt something she hadn’t in a long time, peace.

She was still afraid. Still scarred. But in Alexander’s arms, she felt whole. And for now, that was enough.
