Chapter 75: Dreamt
Theodore.
I reached the floor at a run, my footsteps striking the hospital corridor harder than I intended. I did not slow down. I could not.
Every second that passed while she was out of my sight felt like something tightening inside my chest, something I could not afford to let go again.
The moment the nurse told me she was awake, everything in me shifted. I was so relieved that it my mind refused to accept that after everything and open her eyes and be back in the same world as me.
And yet I kept running.
When I reached the floor and turned into the east wing, I saw her.
Dianna was standing, barely. Her body leaned heavily on two nurses who held her upright with careful hands. One supported her arm while the other stayed close enough to catch her if she lost her balance. She looked weak and fragile, which made my chest tighten painfully, but she was awake.
She was conscious. She was here.
I stopped.
Everything around me blurred into something distant and unimportant the moment she lifted her head and her eyes found mine.
Dianna froze immediately.
I moved before I even realized it.
One step, then another. And then I was running again, not because I was rushing toward her, but because standing still suddenly felt impossible.
When I finally stopped in front of her, I could not breathe properly.
My chest was rising too fast, my lungs struggling to settle. My hands were trembling, but I no longer had the strength to hide it. I did not want to hide it.
Because she was here.
Because she was real.
That was when my emotions hit me completely.
My vision blurred before I could stop it. Tears came without warning, sliding down my face as I stared at her as I thought of nearly losing her forever.
“You are awake,” I said, but my voice broke halfway through.
Dianna tried to speak, but nothing came out. Her throat moved as if she was forcing the words, but her body still looked too weak to fully obey her.
Her eyes stayed on me the entire time, like she was making sure I would not disappear if she looked away.
Her grip on the nurse tightened slightly.
I took a step closer without thinking.
“I thought I lost you,” I said, and my voice dropped lower, rougher now.
She shook her head faintly, as if refusing the idea before it could settle.
“I am here,” she said at last.
The words should have been simple, but they were not.
I closed my eyes briefly, exhaling shakily, because if I did not, I was afraid I would completely fall apart in front of her.
When I opened them again, she was still there looking at me.
“You are really here,” I sobbed quietly as I finally pulled her into my arms.
The moment her body pressed against mine, something inside me completely gave out.
My arms wrapped around her carefully but desperately at the same time, with one hand settling protectively against her back while the other instinctively moved lower, resting against the slight curve of her stomach. The moment I felt it, the reality of everything hit me so hard that my chest physically hurt.
Her.
Our child.
Both alive.
I lowered my head against her shoulder, my eyes shutting tightly as another broken breath escaped me. I could feel her heartbeat against me, and beneath my palm was the life we created together, still there despite everything that almost happened.
God...
I almost lost both of them.
“Silly you…” she whispered shakily, trying to laugh through her tears. Her fingers curled weakly against the back of my shirt as she held onto me just as tightly. “Where do you think I’d go? There’s no way I’d leave you.”
Her voice trembled slightly before she added between quiet sobs, “You might end up hooking up with other girls.”
A broken laugh escaped me despite the tears still falling from my eyes. I pulled back just enough to look at her, my forehead resting against hers while I cupped the side of her face carefully.
“Yeah,” I muttered hoarsely, playing along because hearing her joke again felt like being allowed to breathe after drowning. “You better not go anywhere, then.”
She smiled weakly through her tears, and that alone nearly shattered me all over again.
Because I realized how badly I missed her, and the way she looked at me like I was still someone worth coming back to.
I swallowed hard before tightening my arms around her again, unable to stop myself.
“Hold me tight,” I whispered against her hair. “And never let me go.”
The words came out quieter than I intended, but she heard them anyway.
I felt her arms slowly tighten around me despite how weak she still was, and when her fingers clutched the back of my shirt harder, my chest finally eased.
Relief hit me so suddenly that I almost felt lightheaded from it.
I took a deep breath and forced myself to steady down before carefully slipping one arm beneath her legs and the other around her back. The moment I lifted her, Dianna instinctively leaned closer against my chest, her exhausted body immediately relaxing into me like she no longer had the strength to fight anything anymore.
“You need to rest,” I murmured softly as I took her back in the room.
The nurses quickly followed behind us while I focused entirely on her, making sure every step was steady enough not to jolt her body too much.
When we reached the room, I walked straight toward the bed and carefully lowered her back onto the mattress.
The moment her head settled against the pillow, I reached for the blanket nearby to pull it over her.
But before I could move away, her fingers suddenly wrapped around my hand.
“Please…” she whispered weakly, her eyes already beginning to water again. “Don’t go. Don’t leave me…”
I glanced toward the nurses instinctively, but they were already moving around the room calmly, checking her vitals and adjusting the machines connected to her. One of them reassured me quietly that her condition remained stable before continuing their work.
So I stayed exactly where I was.
I sat down beside her bed and tightened my hand around hers gently, rubbing my thumb against her knuckles.
“I’m not going anywhere,” I said softly.
Dianna looked at me for a long moment, as if she was trying to make sure I was telling the truth.
For a while, neither of us spoke.
I stayed sitting beside her, still holding her hand while she looked strangely distant, as though part of her mind was still trapped somewhere between sleep and reality.
Then suddenly, she spoke.
“I dreamt of my dad…”
