Chapter 284: When Love Finds Its Way Home Again
Chapter 284: When Love Finds Its Way Home Again
Elena's POV
When we reached Grandpa's study, Reginald took a deep breath before following me inside.
Grandpa's face darkened instantly. "So this is the famous Mr. V?"
Sensing his skepticism, I gave Reginald a subtle nod. He placed a business card on Grandpa's desk, then followed it with a rolled canvas.
"I heard you appreciate fine art," Reginald said. "I thought you might enjoy this from my collection."
"I can buy whatever art I like..." Grandpa began, but fell silent as Reginald unrolled the canvas.
I recognized Van der Meer's "Twilight of Count Reynolds" immediately—a legendary 17th-century masterpiece that had vanished from public view for decades.
Grandpa's expression shifted, his eyes fixed on the painting with poorly concealed desire.
"Don't think you can buy your way into our family," he said, though his gaze kept returning to the canvas.
Reginald spoke with sincerity. "I know my past mistakes caused Elena pain, and I'm willing to make amends."
"The damage is already done," Grandpa snorted.
I felt compelled to defend him. "Everyone makes mistakes. As long as he's willing to change..."
"Taking his side already?" Grandpa snapped.
He slammed his hand on the desk. "If you want my approval, there's one condition. Elena raised those twins alone for five years. Can you handle taking care of them by yourself for just one week?"
"What?" I stared in shock.
"I accept," Reginald answered without hesitation.
I turned to him uncertainly. "Are you sure about this?"
"This is between us!" Grandpa barked.
Seeing they were both determined, I didn't argue further, just gave Reginald a "good luck with that" look.
As I left, I noticed Grandpa carefully slipping the painting into his drawer.
I burst into laughter as I left the room. Miley, waiting outside, raised an eyebrow.
"Weren't you defending him earlier? Why are you laughing now?"
"I never imagined the scene would be so bizarre," I replied, still smiling.
Miley glanced at Reginald through the door thoughtfully. "He must truly love you."
My smile softened as I told Miley about how Reginald had once offered to transfer all his assets to my name. The revelation clearly surprised her—in our circles, such complete financial surrender was unheard of.
She patted my shoulder. "I hope you two make it work this time."
---
On the last day of Reginald's week with the children, I returned to find him exhausted but fulfilled.
"Your grandfather was right," he admitted quietly. "Only by experiencing it firsthand can someone understand how challenging raising children truly is."
Ethan and Zoe came running from their room with crafts they'd made.
"Mommy, look what Daddy taught us!" Zoe exclaimed, proudly showing her popsicle stick picture frame decorated with glitter and buttons.
Ethan handed me a sketch of the three of them. "Daddy said he regrets not coming back sooner," he said seriously. "Mom, I think Daddy really loves us."
"Daddy promised he'll stay forever. Is that true?" Zoe asked.
Reginald knelt down. "I promise."
Ethan suddenly turned to him with unexpected gravity. "You have to take good care of Mom. Don't ever leave her alone again."
His words stunned everyone. My eyes welled up as Reginald nodded solemnly. "I promise."
Rising, Reginald embraced me. "I've never properly thanked you for bringing our children into this world and raising them all these years. I can't change the past, but I'll be by your side for everything that comes next."
Later, Grandpa grumbled, "Do whatever you want. I'm not interfering anymore."
I laughed at his surrender.
"Stop laughing," he glared. "If you ever get mistreated again, don't leave alone. We have plenty of people who can make his life miserable..."
"Nobody can hurt me anymore," I assured him.
The next day, Reginald asked to see the hospital where the twins were born. Five years had passed, but the building looked unchanged, frozen in time like a memory.
As I stood lost in memories, Reginald positioned himself beneath a tree and beckoned me over. When I approached, he pressed a hidden switch, releasing a cascade of glitter and rose petals that showered gently around us.
Dropping to one knee, he looked up with sincere eyes. "I'm sorry you had to face that moment alone. I want to spend the rest of my life making it up to you."
He opened a box containing a handcrafted gold filigree diamond ring.
"Did you make this yourself?" I gasped.
He nodded. "It might not look perfect, but I promise to make you a new one for each anniversary."
After a moment, I nodded. During our time apart, he had healed all my insecurities, proving himself worthy of my trust again.
"Let's get married," he said earnestly. "Our first wedding was rushed. This time, I'll give you the ceremony you deserve."
Perhaps his impulsiveness was contagious, because I found myself smiling and nodding. "Alright."
The drive back from the hospital had my heart pounding, city lights blurring as Reginald sped home. That handcrafted ring on my finger felt heavier than ever, a tangible promise.
We barely made it through the door before his lips crashed into mine, urgent and hungry. Clothes hit the floor in a frantic mess, and we stumbled to the bedroom, laughter mixing with breathless gasps. His hands roamed my skin like he was memorizing every inch, erasing years of distance with every touch.
I arched into him, lost in the heat and the raw need between us. It wasn’t just physical—it was every unspoken apology, every missed moment pouring out.
We moved together, desperate and tender all at once, until the world narrowed to just us.
After, tangled in sheets, he pressed a kiss to my forehead, whispering, “I’m never letting go again.” I believed him. Exhausted but whole, I fell asleep in his arms, knowing this was more than passion—it was our foundation rebuilding, stronger than ever.
