Chapter 59
Chapter 59
James stood at the doorway with a mocking expression on his face, looking down at me.
The cold ridicule in his eyes stung my eyes deeply.
"You've got some weird taste, enjoying listening to me with other women at the door like this?"
So they really did...
The pain pierced my heart like thousands of arrows, making my eyes turn red.
I used almost all my strength to hold back the urge to cry, biting my lower lip hard, but my fingers trembled uncontrollably.
James's gaze was too cold, too oppressive. Just being stared at by him like this made me feel an inexplicable guilt.
But I wasn't the one who leaked the bid!
I couldn't help mocking myself internally.
Anna, oh Anna, you're such a fool!
He's treating you like this, and you're still stupidly holding onto ridiculous hopes about him!
You two can never go back!
I took a deep breath, forced the tears back, looked straight into James's eyes, curved my lips into a slight smile, and spoke slowly, "You've got it wrong. I don't have that kind of taste, but I also don't have the kindness to share my own room. This is my room too."
I tried to make my expression look extra mocking.
He treated me this way first.
What was there left to expect?
"Anna!"
James raised his voice, his shoulders shaking with anger.
He stared at me hard, his eyes looking like they wanted to tear me apart!
"Just because you have the title of my wife? You really think you're the lady of the house? Since you want to watch, go prepare some red wine and bring it up, walk right in and watch openly!"
After speaking, he jerked his chin toward the stairs, signaling me to hurry.
A sense of helplessness rose in my heart.
My lips curved slightly.
"You really care about Ms. Green, even need red wine to set the mood. But I'm tired today, why don't you have Victoria prepare it."
I turned to leave, but James grabbed my wrist forcefully.
His eyes were deep, with a storm churning inside, threatening in a low voice, "Don't forget Mom is still in the hospital. You think just because you found a job, you can act tough?"
He stared straight into my eyes, speaking word by word, "With just one word from me, I can make your good days disappear. Want to run off with another man? Dream on!"
Every word James said was like the biting cold wind from a winter wasteland, chilling me to the bone.
I had already explained everything so clearly, but James still didn't believe me!
Now, he was even threatening me with Mom.
What was this?
Punishment for a disobedient little pet?
Realizing this, grief struck my soul, making my whole body tremble.
My fingers clutched at my clothes, not knowing what to say for a moment.
I had prepared myself to treat him coldly before, but at this moment, my heart still went completely cold because of his distrust!
And he was threatening me with Mom—what could I do?
While James and I were in this tense standoff, Lucy walked out of the room.
She wore a spaghetti strap dress, looking at James with seductive eyes, leaning against him softly, "James, don't be so fierce. What if you scare your wife?"
My pupils trembled slightly. I looked away awkwardly, my face turning pale uncontrollably.
James's gaze paused on my face for a moment, then he barked harshly, "What are you waiting for?"
His eyes were too fierce.
I had no doubt that if I didn't go, then Mom's illness...
Right now Mom was still lying in a hospital bed, and who knew when the next surgery would be.
If James really wanted to do something to Mom, I couldn't stop him at all.
I didn't dare think any deeper. Unable to say a word, I quickly turned and went downstairs.
The sound of the door slamming behind me made me shake violently.
I forced down the heartache, not knowing what kind of red wine James wanted.
Thinking of how much he doted on Lucy now, I picked a decent bottle of red wine, poured it into a decanter, took some glasses, and went upstairs to knock on the door.
This time it was Lucy who opened the door.
Lucy tilted her head to look me over. Her strap had slipped off her shoulder, exposing a large area of skin that hurt my eyes.
"Mrs. Smith, I'm really sorry. I didn't expect you and James had a fight."
Lucy's mouth said sorry, but her expression was full of provocation.
Just then the water in the bathroom stopped. Lucy took the red wine from my hands.
"Let me take that."
She looked me up and down, her lips curving into a mocking smile.
Her voice was soft and sweet, "James is done with his shower. Why don't you have a good talk with James? Actually, if you just give in a little, this whole thing will blow over. There's no need to keep being so stubborn."
My heart was bleeding, but my face remained calm.
"This isn't my fault. I won't admit to something I didn't do. Ms. Green, don't try to mislead me into taking the blame. Giving in is one thing, degrading myself is another. You two have fun."
After speaking, I left the bedroom almost like I was escaping.
I couldn't go back to the master bedroom, so I randomly found a guest room.
I didn't turn on the light, letting myself be swallowed by darkness.
The door closed, and in the entire enclosed space, only I remained. The stubbornness and strength I'd been holding onto finally couldn't hold up anymore.
Tears rolled down in big drops. I curled up in the corner, biting my arm hard to keep myself from making any crying sounds.
What did I have to cry about?
When I chose to leave James back then, wasn't it already destined that our relationship would only grow more distant?
As for the title of wife?
This was never about James's lingering feelings for me—it was just his revenge on me!
It let him tie me to his side, yet replace me at any time, bring other women home to humiliate me anytime, anywhere.
It had been a while now. The two people in the master bedroom must be in the throes of passion by now, right?
I thought painfully and desperately.
Suddenly, the door was pushed open.
A ray of light tore through the darkness in the room.
My eyes moved slightly, and I just raised my head.
A strong smell of alcohol hit me in the face. My whole body stiffened, followed by an irresistible kiss that tasted of alcohol.
I stared in disbelief, instinctively pushing against James's chest.
"Don't..."
James hugged me tightly, imprisoning me firmly in his arms.
His deep eyes carried heavy drunkenness, along with a frightening obsession and possessiveness.
He bit my lip hard and laughed coldly, "A little pet thinks she has the right to resist? Anna, I think you've been living too comfortably lately and forgot your place?"
James's voice was too cold, making my whole body turn cold as well.
I relaxed my strength and stopped struggling.
He was right.
I was just a little pet, with no right to resist.
James was very satisfied with my compliance. A cold laugh escaped his lips again, and his burning hot lips fell on mine once more.
James wasn't kissing me.
He was biting my lips, very hard. My lips were about to break, blood welling up, staining my lips red.
It hurt, it really hurt so much.
Compared to the sharp pain on my lips, the inch-by-inch cracking of my heart hurt even more.
Tears fell uncontrollably, heavily hitting the back of my hand.
