CHAPTER 69 - Goodbye?

My hands shake as I point the gun at him. I am scared, too terrified to shoot. Mr. Ferrari doesn’t even flinch, and with the men quickly pointing their guns at me, ready to shoot upon his orders, I wouldn’t dare pull the trigger. If I successfully kill him, it’s certain that Baron, Victor, and I won’t leave this place alive. I am not ready to die, nor do I want to burden my bodyguards’ family with the weight of their loss.

Blowing out a sharp, frustrated breath, I lower my gun. Before I know what is happening, Luca snatches the gun away from me.

“You promised to behave,” he groans. He turns to the men surrounding us, who are still aiming their guns at me. “Lower your arms; she’s not a threat anymore.”

They don’t comply, probably because they don’t answer to him. He isn’t the boss; his father is.

Mr. Ferrari gestures for them to drop their guns, and they do so immediately.

“What were you going to do?” He raises an eyebrow. “Kill me?”

“Even if I don’t today, I will someday,” I yell.

“You’re just a stupid little baby and can’t do anything to me.” He groans, and my rage intensifies. My chest heaves up and down, frustration threatening to drive me crazy. The man who killed my father and isn’t remorseful about it stands right in front of me, and I am unable to do anything. What could be more frustrating than that?

“I would kill you,” I seethe.

“Time to go,” Luca says, and without warning, he scoops me up and carries me over his shoulder. I don’t protest. My eyes remain glued on his father, pure, undiluted hatred saturating my entire being. I will get back at him, one way or another. Of that, I promise. Luca shoves me into the backseat and closes the door before sliding into the driver’s seat. As he starts the engine, my bodyguards enters the car.

The ride back to my apartment is silent. When he parks and I open the door, about to step out, he grips my hand, causing me to pause and turn to look at him.

I stare down at his hand on mine. “What is it?” My voice is surprisingly calm despite everything that just happened.

His eyes are sad as he speaks. “I am sorry, Ivory. I apologize for what my father did to you, and—“

“Why are you apologizing on his behalf?” I interrupt. His father wronged me, not him. So if anyone should apologize, it should be his father. Not that I want his stupid apology anyway.

He sighs and continues. “I’ll understand if you never want to speak with me again. Believe me, I totally do. And I wish you well.”

“Is this a goodbye?”

“I—” He trails off and swallows. “I just don’t know what to say.”

I know I should hate him for his father’s sins, but I don’t. Luca has been really good to me, even when he doesn’t have to. As I stare at him, the only feeling I should have toward him is hate, but the reverse is the case. I still care about him deeply, and I never want to stop speaking with him. But I don’t tell him that.

Nodding, I open the door and step out of the car. Baron and Victor, who are already waiting for me outside, walk behind me as I approach the front door.

“Are you okay?” Victor asks as I insert the key in the keyhole and unlock the door.

“Obviously not,” I murmur as I pull the door open. I gasp and freeze when I see a figure standing just in front of me. How did he get inside?

My bodyguards don’t waste a second before pulling their guns.

“Chase…” I whisper, staring at him in disbelief. “How and when did you get here? How did he even know my place?”

“I’ll answer those questions later, but first, there’s something I need to tell you.” The ever-playful Chase wears a very serious expression, and I feel sick to my stomach a hunch grips me, hoping nothing has happened to Bryant.

A lump forms in my throat, and I swallow. “What?” I ask, unsure if I am ready for the answer.

“It’s about Bryant…” He starts, and I snap my eyes closed. Oh, Lord, no, please. “He was shot multiple times and is in a coma in the hospital.”

Panic surges through my entire being.
