Chapter 186 Side Effect

Chapter 186 Side Effect
Maureen's POV

Lance and I walked hand in hand back to the citadel alongside Dad. My mind was on Asher but it was also with Dawn. She would be going crazy with worry.

Mum met us at the door when we got to the citadel. She hugged me passionately. I wondered how many times while growing up why she never treated me like a mother would treat her only daughter but now that I knew why she was like that, I didn't blame her at all.

'How are you doing Your Majesty?' Mum asked holding my hand.

'Not you too, mum, please,' I said, stepping away from her.

'You are who you are now Maureen. We all must accept that,' Mum said smiling at me.

'How is Asher?' I asked, intentionally changing the topic.

'He is asleep,' Mum said.

'He slept all through the journey back to the council. I am worried,' I said frowning lightly.

'Let us go and see him,' Lance said putting his hand on my shoulder to turn me towards the stairs to the room Dawn and Asher share.

'How is the Luna mum?' I asked as we walked to Asher and Dawn's room.

'She is doing great. She is due in less than ten weeks, and we all can't wait to meet the twins,' Mum said, sounding excited.

'Have they gotten the sex of the twins yet?'

'Yes. They have. But no one is telling either you or Dominus the sex. You will both find out after their birth,' Mum said shrugging.

'They are both boys, Mum,' I said, and both Mum and Dad gasped in surprise.

I laughed lightly. I had seen it in a vision recently. And they both will be Alphas of the second High Moon pack, the former Amman's pack.

When we got to their room, Grandma Gina, Mara, Lucia, Torrent, and Dawn, all sat down around Asher's bed while Dominus and Rocha stood at the window.

Mara immediately stood up and ran to me when she saw me come in.

'Your Majesty,' she curtsied.

'When did you get here Mara?' I asked.

'I came with the Beta and the female Beta. Alan sent for me,' she said.

I had asked the mated ones amongst the golden wolf soldiers to send for their mates. They had their quarters in the citadel built to suit each family without interfering with each other.

I had thought that we would have to get the soldiers' quarters in place first after we settled down but I was impressed when I saw that the citadel was built on a very vast land and provisions were made according to the prophecy. All we had to do were little renovations here and there.

'Have you seen Alan?' I asked Mara.

'No. But he mind-linked me that he would be here soon. He said he was overseeing something at the council,' Mara answered.

Lance must have dedicated something to him. Knowing what Mara's presence meant to Alan, I was glad she had arrived safely.

'It is good to have you here, Mara,' I said, smiling at her sincerely.

'I am glad to be here with you, Your Majesty,' Mara said, returning my smile.

I walked up to Asher and laid a placating hand on Dawn's shoulder. She lifted her face to me and I could see how red and puffy her eyes were from crying.

'Blood tricked down his right nose some minutes ago. What have I done?' Dawn said as fresh tears flowed down her face.

'He will be fine Dawn. Let us hold on to that,' I said then sat down beside him close to his shoulder and put my hand on his chest as I sent energy into his body to try and heal him.

When I was done, he changed position from sleeping face up to sleeping on his side. He opened his eyes slightly and smiled at me.

'I just want to sleep, Mama. I am fine,' Asher said calling me 'mama' teasingly.

'Asher, you were awake all this while?' Dawn asked shocked.

'No. I woke up because Maureen touched me and I felt peace. My head is killing me, and I need to keep my eyes closed,' Asher said, closing his eyes.

'You mean Maureen's power of healing didn't take away the pain in your head?' Dominus asked stepping away from the window.

'It did a little but the pain is still there,' Asher answered without opening his eyes.

'But it was...' Lucia was saying but she was cut short by the door opening.

The leader of the waiters entered, led in by two council guards, and Grandma Gina immediately said she was the one who sent for him.

The waiters had accommodations in the council too. Those who wished to stay were adequately provided for.

'I called for you to explain the issue of the side effects and shortcomings to them,' Grandma Gina said.

'Side effects and shortcomings,' I asked.

'Yes. Side effects and shortcomings. But before I say anything, can those who are not a part of the team excuse us?' The leader of the Waiters said

Those who were not a part of the team, including Mum and Da,d, excused us. I would have expected mates of team members to be allowed to stay back but since it wasn't my decision to make, I didn't bother to bring it up.

After everyone else had left, we all focused our attention on the leader of the waiters as he cleared his throat thoroughly.

'Each of your powers has its shortcomings if it is not properly reined in. From what I was able to gather from Gina's explanation, Dawn tried to get into Asher's head while he was not asleep and from that distance. You could have killed him if he was an ordinary wolf,' he explained.

'I didn't know that could happen,' Dawn said defensively.

'That is what I am saying about the shortcoming. You can't bump into people's minds at that velocity except if you intend to kill or maim them. It is literally like throwing something heavy into a person's head from a distance,' he continued saying without minding how defensive Dawn sounded.

'So you are saying Dawn could kill if she did that?' I asked.

'Yes. And right now her mate is feeling the side effect of getting his mind rammed into,' he replied.

'What do we do now? Even Maureen's power can't seem to heal him,' Lance said.

'He will be okay. He is the youngest waiter, a general of the Golden Wolf army; he would not succumb like that,' the leader said.

'What is my shortcoming?' I asked without raising my head and the room fell silent. I wanted to know.

'Anger. You need to get a good handle on your temperament. Thankfully enough your mate will always be there to calm you down,' the leader of the waiters answered.

'I guess the rest of us will have to find out what ours is?' Dominus asked when it was obvious that the leader of the waiters was not ready to explain any further.

'Yes. You definitely will,' the leader answered smiling. He then excused himself and left with Grandma Gina.

We stayed with Asher and Dawn for a while before we left. Dawn was smiling a little when we left. I knew she was still worried but we knew Asher would be okay.

Dawn's POV

I would have gone mad with worry if Grandma Gina and the Beta female were not there when Asher was brought in. I never believed that what I did could harm him in that manner.

I had felt fear in the bond and tried to contact him but he blocked me out. I had pictured his sleeping face and went into his mind but I had to get out fast when I became suddenly confused.

I remained seated in the same spot thinking of what could have happened to me if what I did killed Asher. I stood up and went to the window to stare out of it.

Asher stirred and I quickly rushed to his side. I felt his temperature for lack of what to do.

'Asher, are you awake?' I asked quietly so I wouldn't make his head hurt in case it still hurts.

'Yes,' he grumbled then opened his eyes. His eyes were red as if he had slept for too long.

'I am sorry Asher. I didn't mean to hurt you. I got scared when I felt your fear in the bond and you blocked me out,' I explained as tears fell down my face.

It was as if the tears I had refused to shed for years decided to come running down my face. That day, I was feeling so hurt by the thought that I had hurt my mate so badly.

'And you are hurting me more right now,' Asher said quietly.

'How?' I asked wondering how I was hurting him again. 'Is my voice making your head hurt?' I asked in a whisper just in case I was right.

'No. Your tears are making my heart hurt Dawn. I don't like to see you unhappy. Where is my tough girl?' Asher teased and I smiled through my tears.

'I am here Asher. I am not tough at the moment. The possibility of me killing you makes me feel bad,' I said to him. I didn't try to control my tears as I let it flow freely.

'Come and lie down beside me,' Asher said and did that promptly. He turned to face me on the bed and rested a hand on my face.

'How is your head now?' I asked still talking quietly.

'It is not hurting anymore but I am so tired. I have never felt like this before but I will be fine,' Asher said assuringly.

'The leader of the waiters said what I did to you would be lethal on an ordinary wolf,' I told him.

'I heard everything. The only thing is I don't see it as a shortcoming, I see it as a strength of your power,' Asher said.

'Why?' I asked.

'Because you can sit here and get rid of whoever stands in our way, no matter the distance,' Asher said smiling.

'I love you, Asher,' I said sincerely.

'And I love you too Dawn,' Asher said and kissed me on the lips.

'Did you hear that the Luna is due in less than ten weeks?' I asked changing the topic because of the look in Asher's eyes. I didn't want him to do anything that would stress him. At least not at that moment.

'Really? Let's see who will win the bet. Dominus or Maureen,' Asher said smiling.

I sighed contentedly. The future was bright and I had my loved ones. That was all that mattered.
