Chapter 184 The Last Laboratory

Chapter 184 The Last Laboratory
Maureen's POV

Four Days Later

'I wish to see your birth mother so that I can apologize for what I did to her,' Talon said to me.

It was four days after I entered the citadel and I was crowned. It had been the four most hectic days of my life. It had been crazy sorting through a lot of things.

The mess the power-drunk and hungry few had created was so huge. I had sent some of the golden wolf soldiers after girls who were kept at the council's border. One of the girls kept in the citadel had told us how she was brought in from the border.

I was so busy that the last time I saw Talon after he came out of the hidden wall at the citadel was the following morning after the crowning when I had tried to heal him. It had worked but the doctor said he was malnourished and he needed a lot of rest.

I had insisted on seeing Talon at that moment because I didn't know when next I would see him. He was at the council's main hospital, a stone's throw from the citadel. Dominus and Asher had been investigating the whereabouts of the doctors we rescued alongside Talon. We got a tip-off on where they were and I decided that we go after them immediately. They had suffered enough.

We also suspected that Talon's breeders that were missing were also in the same place as the doctors.

'I doubt if my birth mother will want to talk to you right now,' I told Talon after he expressed his wish to talk to my birth mum.

'I know she must be pissed with me. I knew she was mated but I was desperate. I didn't know how much time I had before they caught up with me,' Talon explained.

'Keep the explanation till you meet her. You almost destroyed her life with that singular action. If her mate had not loved her enough, she would probably be dead by now,' I told him folding my arms on my chest.

'I am sorry,' Talon said sadly.

'You owe me no apology. I have come to terms with the way I came to be and the way I had to live just to fulfill my destiny. You might try apologizing to Dominus in the meantime; she is my birth mother's first child,' I said, and Talon's eyes became round with surprise.

'The young man has been nothing but nice to me. Does he know who I am?' Talon asked the last part in a whisper.

It was true that Dom had been nothing but nice to Talon. He had brought him to the hospital alongside two other soldiers and had been seeing to his well-being and giving me feedback.

'Every member of my team knows who you are to me and Dominus,' I answered.

'I wish I had done things differently. I ...' Talon was saying, but he stopped when Dominus entered, clearing his throat to get our attention.

'It is time to go, Your Majesty,' Dominus said without sparing Talon a glance.

'I am ready, Dom, and you don't have to call me Majesty. It feels odd coming from you,' I said walking away from Talon's bed.

'You might have to get used to it, Your Majesty. It is expected of me to respect you as your general,' Dominus said looking serious. He was really taking his golden wolf general position seriously.

'Dominus, how are you doing ?' Talon greeted him.

'I am fine,' Dominus said to him without a smile.

'Can you come closer Please?' Talon asked. Dominus looked at me and I nodded that he could go ahead.

'Is everything okay?' Dominus asked Talon.

'Yes. I know you are the son of the golden wolf's birth mother. I am sorry for what I did to her. I did it out of my desperation to not allow the golden wolf to fall into the wrong hands. My father made sure that I understood how lethal a weapon the golden wolf is,' Talon explained.

'You are apologizing to the wrong person,' Dominus said.

'I owe you an apology too. Your parents could have separated because of my actions.'

'But they didn't,' Dominus said then stepped back. 'I will advise that you keep your apology to yourself for now. Don't try to contact my mum even if she comes to the citadel. She is pregnant and I don't want anything happening to her or the pregnancy. The incident traumatized her, so your surfacing in her present condition might be dire.'

'I understand,' Talon said sadly.

'I will await you outside,' Dominus said to me then walked out of the room.

'I just hope you guys will let me see her someday and apologize to her,' Talon said pitifully.

'We will but for now, stay away from her. Her mate is very passionate and possessive when it comes to her. I don't want him to kill you,' I said and then turned around to leave, ' I will see you when I return,' I said at the door before quietly closing the door behind me.

When I stepped outside, the golden wolf soldiers, Rocha, Asher, and Dominus, were waiting for me. I had to talk Lance out of going with us. The Alpha and Dad were moving the prisoners with them at High Moon to the dungeon at the council. I wanted him to personally supervise the process. Dawn and Lucia were also staying back.

We got into the cars and drove off following the map Asher had unearthed in the process of investigation. An investigation he involved Dawn in and she had to walk into not less than three former elders of the council's mind to get the information necessary. I heard that one of the elders lost his mind and had been mumbling about dinosaurs ever since then.

'I thought as much,' Dominus said suddenly as we left the borders of the council.

'What do you mean?' I asked.

'The golden wolf soldiers rescued the girls from somewhere around here according to their description,' Dominus answered.

'And?'

'I think we are going back to the same location,' Asher answered me, staring down at the map in his hands.

'Really? If there were other people there, wouldn't the golden wolf soldiers have noticed?' I mused as the golden wolf soldier driving the car stopped in front of an abandoned building.

'You were part of those that came for the rescue right?' I asked the golden wolf soldier driving us.

'Yes, Your Majesty, and this was the house. We made sure we emptied it that very day,' he answered.

'I guess we have to go inside then and find out why we were led back here,' I said and would have gotten out of the car if Asher hadn't stopped me.

'Wait. Can there be an underground room somewhere?' Asher reasoned.

'Whatever it is, let's find out,' I said and stepped out of the car.

We walked into the house but we did it carefully since we didn't know what had been happening in there since the last time the golden wolf soldiers raided it. The house was totally quiet.

I walked ahead of everyone. Suddenly I froze as a vision hit me. In the vision, I bent down and removed the rug under my feet to reveal a big door then I was back to myself.

'Are you okay? You suddenly froze,' Dominus asked worriedly.

'I am okay. I had a flash. I should be used to these things by now,' I said rubbing my forehead.

'So you are fine?' Asher asked. His look mirrored that of Dominus.

'I am fine. I think we have to remove this rug,' I said pointing at the floor.

Two golden wolf soldiers quickly swung into action. They went to one corner of the room and pulled the rug back. We stood back so they could do their job. I wasn't surprised when I saw an underground steel door come into view.

'I said it,' Asher said.

I turned to the golden wolf soldiers and pointed at four of them to stand guard while the rest of us would go under.

The door was so heavy that Dominus and Asher had to join hands in opening it. We discovered that the underground room or whatever it was, was well illuminated.

We descended into the eerie silence of the well-illuminated underground room and discovered that it was not a room but a massive building with state-of-the-art science equipment.

We swung into action immediately. The first door we opened was empty so we split up. After five minutes of opening doors and coming up empty-handed, Asher shouted that he had seen them.

The rest of us ran to where he was and I sighed in relief when I saw the scientist from Rolling Hills and the other doctors hale and hearty.

'How did you find the last laboratory?' The scientist asked.

'The last laboratory?' I asked.

'Yes. This is the last laboratory. The one they built last and thought nobody would ever find,' the scientist answered.

'I guess they underestimated me when they were building it,' I said. Let's go,' I said taking the scientist's hand.

'Wait. There is something we have to do before we leave. It is very important,' one of the doctors said, and without waiting for my answer, he ran out of the room and led the way to another door.

When he opened the door I discovered that it was a big hall that had giant pods lined against the wall. When I looked closely at the pods, I whistled in amazement. There were people in the pods with their eyes closed, each a replica of the other.

'There are about seven hundred pods in here containing their fake soldiers. They are still in the early stage of development. If we unplug them now, they will die,' the doctor who led us there explained.

'What if they are reconnected?' I asked as an idea occurred to me.

'They will resurrect?' The doctor answered frowning. He must have realized the loophole in his plan to unplug them.

'Is there a way we can flood the pods with water?' I asked.

'Yes. If we plug the oxygen supplier into the tap over there,' the scientist answered pointing at the tap on the pods.

'Let's do that then,' I said. I wasn't about to leave a major loophole that will come to bite our asses later.
