Chapter 131 Good news

Chapter 131 Good news

The familiar face had his eyes on Heaven where she stood in the Image.

Maverick

.

The same man who had visited her  hospital for the first time and who had, by some twisted coincidence, become her next-door neighbor.

So he had known her all along? Fabian’s gut had been right.

Rayan took the phone and studied the picture. “Hold on… Fabian, isn’t this the guy you asked me to look into?” he asked, surprised.

“Fucking bastard.”

Fabian’s hands gripped Samantha’s shoulder hard. Startling her.

“Tell me everything you know about this man,” he demanded.

Rayan immediately pulled Fabian’s hand away from his woman, his brows scrunched. “Chill, man. Don’t hurt her.” He drew Samantha protectively closer to his side.

“I’m okay, Rayan,” she rolled her eyes at him. She wasn’t that fragile.

Then she recounted the events she had witnessed on the cruise seven years ago,  in full detail calmly, up until she met him at the bar later on.

Fabian’s jaw locked tight. His fists clenched until his knuckles bleached white. A red haze crept across his vision.

What kind of life did she have before?

“Rayan,” he called, his voice edged with restraint , “make calls, Right now. Find out who he really is. Offer a higher amount of what he offered the investigators.”

He knew that would be the only reason why they had given him a wrong identity before.

That Maverick was loaded and he knew it.

He already had his own phone out, his thumb dialing Heaven’s number. She needed to stay away from that man.

He was a dangerous stalker and the call went straight to voicemail.

He tried the hospital line next. As the largest investor, the call connected instantly.

Whatever he heard on the other end drained the color from his face.

He rushed, grabbed his keys and  stormed out of the house without another word.

He drove like a man possessed, tires screeching against the concrete, he weaved through traffic.

The screen on his dashboard lit up with a call from Rayan.

“Speak.”

“He’s Maverick Richard,” Rayan said quickly.

“Second son of the Richards Military family. He is married. And they both have a daughter.”

Fabian’s grip on the steering wheel tightened hard until his knuckles turned white. What was he doing dating Vera when he had his own family?

“What was his relationship to Vera?” he asked. He couldn’t stand any more suspense.

Rayan hesitated for half a heartbeat.

“His brother's widow .”

“Fuck!”

Fabian ended the call and slammed his foot down on the accelerator, the engine roaring as the car surged forward.

There was a sudden quietness after the accident.

Then the heavens opened and rain began to fall in petals washing away the blood that  stained the road.

The whole world went silent for Heaven except a ringing sound as she laid on the floor.

She gripped the bracelet like an anchor. Her eyes moved in time to see the terror carved in Mavericks face as he ran towards her.

He dropped to his knees beside her, scooped her into his arms, and cradled her against his chest like he could shield her from what already happened. His lips formed her name again and again,

“Heaven… Heaven… Heaven…” but the sound never reached her. Only the thumping sound of her heartbeat and the long ping sound.

Her vision blurred then everything went blank.

Maverick sprang on his feet with Heaven in his arms and ran back towards the hospital entrance.

Rain drenched from his hair to forehead down to his shirt. Blood from her clothes smeared across his shirt.

He burst through the glass doors.

“I need a doctor right now!!!!” The commanding roar came from his throat.

The nurses were shocked. They had just said goodbye to their healthy boss and her husband a while ago. But she was brought back with blood on her clothes.

“Snap out of it!!!!! Right now.” Maverick bellowed at them in fear. His chest rising and falling. He couldn’t lose her, not when he just found her.

A stretcher appeared almost immediately. She was placed on it and wheeled to the theatre room. Maverick followed closely until the door slammed shut, locking him out.

The red light above flickered on.

He stood there dripping water on the tiles staring at the door like it was a ticking bomb.

He began to pace like a wounded lion. His jaw clenched tight, his hand clenched and unclenched. His body shook with fear, one he had never felt before.

Someone else was wheeled immediately past Maverick  to the operating room next to hers. Blood dripped on the hospital floor from the stretcher.

But he barely registered it.

Not long after, the theatre room door opened and she was wheeled out still pale and unconscious.

Maverick lunged forward immediately. He grabbed one of the nearest doctors by the arm.

“Where are you taking her?”

The doctor didn’t flinch, he explained professionally “Sir, she didn’t sustain any external injury. The blood on her body isn’t hers. We are taking her for a full body CT scan to see if she sustained  internal damage, hemorrhage or organ trauma”

Maverick’s grip tightened, then he released him.

The doctor met his eyes. “Be rest assured we will do our best to treat Doctor Vera.”

His breath shuddered.

A young nurse approached hesitantly, holding out a phone. “Excuse me, sir… her phone.”

He took it. The screen lit up with missed calls and a new notification.

Liam.

Their son’s name stared back at him.

Maverick’s thumb hovered over the answer button. What the hell could he say to a seven-year-old boy right now?.

He turned the phone off and slid it into his pocket.

“How is she? Maverick asked.

He sat in the doctor's office, his hand clasped so tight. Like he was waiting for a final verdict.

The doctor leaned back in the chair, while her file was in his hand.

“Luckily, she only sustained a mild concussion. No fractures, no internal bleeding, no serious trauma. She’s sleeping now, the sedation and the shock would wear off soon. She should wake up any moment.”

Maverick exhaled hard.. Relief washed over him instantly. The tension that had coiled in his chest for hours slowly lessened. He got up immediately, his chair scraped back and lunged for the door.

“Thats not all the good news, sir”
