Chapter 103 You

Chapter 103 You
Eleanor’s fork slipped from her fingers and clattered against her plate. Eva’s grip tightened around hers. Butler Rose’s eyes widened from where she stood. The dining room fell into stunned silence.

Maverick, who had paused mid-dab, lifted his gaze to his father.

“Why bring back someone who left on her own?” he asked nonchallantly, already rising to his feet. His jaw was clenched as he walked away.

The words hit harder than a slap.

His reply shocked two people, Eva and, of course, his father. These two knew how much he was into Heaven.

Eva’s brows drew together. That wasn’t right. Maverick had never stopped searching for Heaven. Not for a single day. She had watched him tear the world apart quietly, relentlessly. Why was he suddenly acting indifferent?

“Yes, Sylvester,” Eleanor added, trying to sound reasonable, scared of what her husband would find out if he chose to go looking.

“Maverick is right..She left on her own. Why go looking for her? Boyle’s memorial can go on. Eva even arranged a charity in his name at Avi’s school. It was Boyle’s alma mater too.”

Eva lowered her gaze modestly, playing the dutiful wife perfectly but her mind was spiraling; something felt fishy with Maverick the more she stared at him. He didn’t reek of alcohol and he looked like the man she fell in love with.

General Richard said nothing. His eyes followed his son’s retreating back, something heavy settling on his mind.

Heaven hadn’t seen Fabian since the fight.

The guilt sat like a stone in her chest. She regretted every harsh word, especially the one about shame. She hadn’t meant it, she just hated her life at that time, where she wanted to just forget everything and reality just set in. Her emotions had spiraled, tangled with fear, confusion, and exhaustion. She knew Fabian didn’t mean harm, what he said was the truth. She needed to see him. Talk things through, she missed him.

When she stepped out of the house, her gaze drifted instinctively across the street.

Maverick.

Just the thought of him unsettled her. He made her feel so much all at once alive, wild, reckless, exposed. And she barely knew him.

She looked away.

Her tote bag was slung over her shoulder, her brown hair dyed orange pulled into a full bun. She had employed a nanny to take Liam to school once he woke up and after he got back from school. She had a lot on her schedule. She had posted a hiring notice, and responses had flooded in so she had to interview them today.

A car slowed beside her.The window rolled down.

It was Maverick.

Her heart skipped multiple beats.

“Get in.”

“T-thank you, the bus stop isn’t far…” she said quickly, walking past him.

That was it.

Maverick had enough of her attitude; he had tried to stay cool but she was stubborn, having a man as a friend and now avoiding him even though she was drawn to him because of her so-called friend.

Maverick stepped out of the car, his jaw set tight.

Heaven felt the world tilt as the ground vanished beneath her feet. She gasped as he lifted her effortlessly.

“Maverick put me down!” she struggled, fists pounding uselessly against his chest.

“Stop moving,” he warned quietly, his tone deadly calm.

Her blows felt like taps to him. “Put me down right now!”

He took her to the car placed her on the passenger seat, she kept thrashing and attempting to scramble out.

“If you don’t stay still,” he murmured, leaning in, lips dangerously close, “I’ll kiss you right here.”

The look in his eyes was feral and she knew he wasn’t joking.

Her body betrayed her with a hiccup, she looked around and they had grabbed attention from passersby. Heat rushed to her face. She stilled.

He clasped her seatbelt and then slammed the door before walking over to the driver's seat.

His hands gripped the steering wheel like it was the only thing keeping him restrained.

“It wasn’t hard was it?” His voice was deep with restraint.

“What do you want, Maverick?” she asked, barely above a whisper.

“You!”

His reply was firm. It felt like time paused for both of them.

“I want you. And you want me,” he continued, voice calmer now. “So why are you fighting it?”

She turned her face away. “I told you I needed time…” she wriggled with her hand.

He reached over, tilting her chin up until she had no choice but to look at him.

“You had a whole week to think about it, I’m losing my mind and I don’t have that patience anymore.” he closed his eyes to steady himself.

“We just met,” she whispered. “I don’t even know you.”

she came up with another excuse trying to deny the fact that this stranger had a strong hold on her

Maverick didn’t speak, he started the car and drove all the way to her hospital thinking about what she said. When he pulled over. He was done thinking he turned to her.

“I will come pick you up after work, then you can start the process of getting to know me. How long will it take you to get to know me?” He asked her seriously.

She blinked at him, was that how they knew people? she didn’t refute him though.

She bit her lip thinking.

That was a mistake, this little action drove him over the edge.

Maverick leaned in and claimed her mouth without warning. The kiss was deep, hungry, controlled only by sheer will. Her hand rose to his chest, fingers curling into his shirt.

When he pulled back, they were both breathing hard.

“If you bite your lips like that it might not end in just a kiss.” He breathed out. The bulge in between his legs was uncomfortable.

Heaven's eyes dropped low and she saw the evidence of just how affected he was.

Her face burned.

“I… I have something to attend to,” she said softly. “You can pick me up at my place by 8 p.m.”

A slow, satisfied look crossed his face.

“Good.”

She unclasped her seatbelt and stepped out, her legs unsteady.

Maverick looked at the passenger seat. She had forgotten her bag.

He opened the car door, got out, and called her name.

“Heaven.”

She paused and turned slowly toward him. Maverick walked over and handed the bag to her. She looked up at him, confusion flickering across her face.

“Who is Heaven?”
