Chapter 95 - On the search

Dimitri.

“We have searched everywhere but they are nowhere to be found!" Carter says as he runs out of a basement.

“But everything indicates that they were there not long ago." We have searched every part of the church and they are not here. They must have left during the attack. All the others are dead.

“Someone is here!" We run in the direction of Stephan's voice and we find him pointing his gun at the only person alive. I run and grab him by the collar.

“Where is he!" It looks like he is one of the weaklings because he points in the direction of the altar. Trent runs in that direction and a door opens after he knocks it off it's hinges. I take out my gun and shoot him in the head before following Trent. The others fall close.

“Look here! A car trail. It surely leads to them. Get the cars"!" Clayton and Noah hurry back to bring the cars around. We follow the trails till it we see two cars ahead. “Let's stop here, so they don't see us coming." We stop at a corner and everyone gets out with their weapons.

“Whatever we do, our priority is to get them out safely. When you get them, don't look back. Don't think, just get them out." They nod in agreement. There is an understanding between us.

Noah and Stephan take the right side of the building, Trent and Carter take the left while Clayton, Brian and I come through the front. Gunshots soon fill the air and men drop to the floor. We get closer to what could be a barn or store when I hear a loud scream.

Hearing her screams makes me see red. They could be hurting her in there and I won't have mercy. We kill most of the guards and the others retreat into the building and we follow them.

There is a trail of blood leading inside. I follow it slowly and stop when I see the scene in front of me. Alana is on her knees, her hands are tied to her back and a man points a gun at her. She looks up and her eyes connect with mine “Dimitri!" She is rewarded with a punch on her face for her outburst. I'm gonna kill that bastard.

“Don't you dare raise that gun any higher or I'll kill them!" It's none other than the betrayer. The man I was once foolish to trust. My godfather. He has my mother in front of him and his gun is faced at the side of her head. It's like I am seeing him for the first time. In his true skin. The mask is finally off and the wolf has been revealed.

“And I promise, you won't walk out of here alive." He laughs like I said something funny.

“You think I care about walking out alive. The purpose for my life has been realized. I am about to take everything away from you. My life means nothing."

I have been looking around but there is no sign of Vanessa. But I am sure it's her voice I heard. My eyes follow the trail and stops at a pool of blood.

“Its hers. The baby is coming." Alana shouts and she is slapped again. My heart drums in my chest when Alana's words register in my brain. She is about to have the baby. Our baby. I need to find her now.

“Where is she! Now!"

“Probably dead. I gave Francesca the permission to do as she please."

“What did I ever do to you? He treated you like a brother." I reference my father.

“Your major offence was being born of his bloodline. I would have shown you mercy if you had follows through and married my daughter. You think I didn't know? All the times you snuck around and fucked her like a slut. Under my roof like the miserable Ian that you are. Once you threw her away, I did away with my mercy too."

“Your problem is with me so be a man and face me. Let them go!"

“You foolish child. You think the world revolves around you. Everything that belongs to your family will soon be mine. Including her." He pulls my mother by her hair for emphasis. “Imagine my surprise when I found out the late Mrs Ian wasn't late at all. I came after her but your father wanted to play the hero after throwing her away the first time. She is finally going to be mine. Everything is."

“You will never win!" My mother says through gritted teeth.

“I know that you were the one who got Wesley to back out somehow but I already had a backup plan."

“Look at what found." Brian whistles as he drags a limping man inside. He is the one who worked at the house and kidnapped Vanessa “This one claims he is his son." He points at Alexander. “Let them go and we promise safety for your children."

“Father, don't. We already know what we could encounter. I'm ready to do my part." Such loyalty towards the man who does not know the meaning of the word.

“Touching! If you insist." I signal towards Brian who shoots him in the head. He falls to the floor and soon, a pool of books starts to form.

“No!!" Alexander shouts at the same time that my mother forces out of his grip and yells my name. She took his distraction as an opening. I am blind to part of the things that happens but there are gunshots around me. Some coming from the end of the building. I make sure my gun is targeted at him. I fire three times and both he and my mother fall to the ground.

I run towards her on the floor and I panic when I see the blood forming around her torso and shoulder. I try to lift her head but she winces. Her chest rise and falls fast making it obvious that she is fighting to breathe.

“Mom!!!" Noah drops to his knees immediately and he is panicking “Don't worry mom. You'll be alright, I promise." There is no certainty in his voice.

She lifts her finger and points to an open window “Va.. Vanessa. The baby is coming. Vanessa."

“Go on, Dimitri! Hurry!!" I am on my feet before I think and run out back. The rain is pouring with a lot more force than usual. There is a pathway out back and I follow it praying to whatever higher supernatural power that nothing happens to her. I reach the end of the path and there is a dock.

I get there just in time to see Francesca push her into the water. I don't think. The only thing on my mind is getting her out of the water. A man raises his gun but he falls to the floor and Francesca looks terrified. I jump into the water immediately and swim after her. It doesn't take me time to find her and pull her out of the water. Carter and Brian are already there to help me out.

She is shaking, an effect of the harsh weather and the freezing river. “You came!" It comes out a little above a whisper and hugs me when her hands come loose. I try to hold her up but she screams.

“The baby! The baby is coming. I cannot hold it any longer!"

“Fuck! I cannot do this! Oh, no!" Carter yells in panic more than the woman in labor.

“The medics?" I ask him hoping there are people coming.

“Already here!" Many footsteps get closer and we are soon covered with a large umbrella and some towels. Other people with different sizes of first aid boxes comes around and someone with gloved hands kneels beside me. The woman proceeds to check her.

“She is already at ten centimeters and the baby is not waiting any longer. We need to get it out before any complications." Vanessa screams following the woman's diagnosis. “I need to to go behind her." I do so immediately. She barks orders at her colleagues and soon, they surround us.

“Oh, Christ! This is really happening!"

“I know that you've been through a lot and you're exhausted but I need you to do this with me, do you hear me." Vanessa nods “I want you to push when I tell you to. Okay?"

“Yes." The rain is still falling heavily.

“Now!" The woman orders and she does. It is horrific for me to see her in any kind of pain. I touch her arm and notice the long knife cut on it. The labor continue for a fee minutes.

“I can see the head. One more!" Her fingers bite into my skin as she pushes with all her strength. In the next moment, a loud cry fills everywhere.

All the troubles, betrayals are forgotten as the baby comes into sight. He has a strong pair of lungs and does not stop crying even after he is handed over to his mother who makes no move to take him. Something is wrong.

“Vanessa!! Baby!!" I shake her and she doesn't move. “We have to get her to the hospital immediately."
