CHAPTER 26

AVA CLARKE

I breathe heavily as I continue to gaze at Damien before me at this moment. I discreetly sigh as his hand touches my waist while his other hand holds mine. Furthermore, I blink, seeing his green pupils staring endlessly at me.

"I hope you've found a dress for the ball, little mouse.", he murmurs, and I shake my head.

"Not yet, but I still need to do that.", I whisper, noticing he remains silent, as if pondering something now. I blink, recalling the steps he had taught and demonstrated earlier.

The movements flow smoothly between us, as if we're following a rehearsed choreography. I let myself be carried away by the dance, allowing Damien to guide me through intricate moves.

Despite knowing Lucius is my true partner at the ball, I feel strangely captivated by Damien's proximity. The dimly lit room adds a sense of intimacy to the moment, making each movement feel more significant and intense.

I'm still surprised at how good Damien is at this type of dance, but I realize they have this same kind of ball every year. My breath grows shorter as my body moves in harmony with his. He intensifies each dance move, and I strive to keep up, my feet sliding across the wooden floor in perfect synchrony.

Even without music filling the space, I close my eyes for a few seconds, allowing myself to immerse myself in the melody echoing in my mind. I can hear every note and every chord, as if I'm present in the ballroom, gracefully spinning to the rhythm of imaginary music.

The sensation of being in Damien's arms is strange and unsettling to me. Yet, in the heat of the moment, it's hard to resist the temptation to simply let myself be carried away by the dance and by the emotion Damien evokes within me.

At this moment, I remember the dream I had with Damien and Lucius simultaneously. Still with my eyes closed, I can feel my skin getting warmer, and if I open my eyes, he'll know what I'm doing and will make another annoying tease.

As we continue to dance in the dimness of the room, I feel enveloped by a sense of enchantment. I surrender to the moment, allowing myself to be guided by Damien's movements, temporarily forgetting my worries and obligations.

With effort, I open my eyes again, meeting Damien's intense gaze. I raise my head, seeing his green eyes seem to glow as he continues to dance with me; I sigh once again, feeling him spin me swiftly and skillfully.

"Do you also have a partner at this ball?", I ask, trying to force my mind to stop thinking about what it would be like to kiss him right now.

"Unfortunately, yes. Lucius wants everything to be perfect, like every year. Why are you asking me this? Do you want me to steal you away? I thought my brother's gentle and polite manner would attract you more, little mouse.", he says with a smile, and I roll my eyes quickly.

"You and your brother are two completely different people. Lucius is a nicer and easier person to get along with.", I tease him, making him laugh at this moment.

"Well, I have to agree with you.", he says before spinning me once again.

"You're learning fast and didn't step on my foot this time.", he says, making me laugh.

That's true, and I feel proud of my own progress. I continue dancing with Damien, letting myself be carried away by the fluid movements and the energy that seems to electrify the surrounding air.

In a moment of surprise and ecstasy, Damien spins me twice in a row, my body responding to his commands with a grace that surprises me to the core.

Suddenly, he bends me back in a bold and daring move. I involuntarily close my eyes, my neck exposed to the touch of the environment. A feeling of vulnerability and excitement is overtaking me at this moment. My breath escapes in a soft sigh as I surrender to the moment, trusting Damien completely to keep me safe in his arms.

When I finally open my eyes, I find Damien's fixed on mine. There's something in them—something intense and charged with emotion—that leaves me breathless. I know I shouldn't feel this way, but I can't stop thinking about forbidden and sensual things with Damien.

For a brief moment, I feel different, as if floating in a sea of unknown sensations. Seconds pass as we stare at each other, caught in an intense moment of connection. I feel my heart pounding in my chest and my breath growing shorter as Damien's proximity envelops me like a warm embrace.

Our lips are so close, almost brushing against each other, and I find myself wishing and longing for a kiss at this moment. The tension between us is palpable, an invisible thread that seems to pull us closer to each other, unable to resist the magnetic attraction that binds us.

We continue to gaze at each other, trapped in a hypnotic trance, my eyes shifting to Damien's mouth, imagining what it would be like to feel his lips against mine. I feel tempted and captivated by the promise of a moment of pure passion and ecstasy.

Then, suddenly, Damien lifts my body, swiftly backing away and breaking the spell that enveloped us. I blink, dazed and confused, trying to understand what just happened.

The feeling of euphoria and desire still courses through me, leaving me yearning for more but also completely bewildered by the sudden change of scene.

I look at Damien, my eyes still full of unanswered questions, but he seems to have resumed his usual expression, as if nothing had happened. A mix of frustration and curiosity stirs within me, leaving me with a sense of restlessness as I try to process everything that just happened.

"It's very late, and you need to go to bed. Tomorrow will be a long day.", he says, and I nod. Damien doesn't look at me this time; he simply walks away quickly before going upstairs and returning to his room, and I know I need to do the same.

Still confused by Damien's reaction after the tense moment in the living room, I turn off the lights before climbing the stairs toward my room. My heart is still racing, the events of the night swirling in my mind like a whirlwind of confusing emotions.

Every step I take seems to echo in the mansion's silent walls, adding a sense of unreality to my journey back to the refuge of my room.

As I reach the door of my room, I hesitate for a moment before entering. I feel a mix of anxiety and anticipation as I prepare to face the loneliness that awaits me on the other side. With a resigned sigh, I push the door open and step into the room.

I close the door behind me with a sigh, allowing myself to fall onto the soft bed with a single movement. I close my eyes for a moment, trying to push away the vivid images of Damien dancing with me in the living room.

Every move, every glance, seems etched into my mind, echoing like a constant reminder of my own vulnerability in front of him.
