  Chapter 264

I wanted to accompany Alexander when he was going to see Maxim, but he refused. I knew that he didn’t want me to see him, but still, he said I was going to see him later.
After helping Riley with dinner and giving her medication, I went back to the room to meet Alexander. I hadn’t talked to him since he came back from the station.
“Hey, what happened at the station?” I asked him as I walked into the room.
He was standing in front of the closet and searching through it. “I have something to tell you,” Alexander muttered under his breath.
My interest became piqued. “I’m listening,” I responded as different thoughts ran through my head. Alexander sounded so serious and I couldn’t help but wonder what he wanted to say to me.
He took a deep breath and turned around. “I’m sorry I didn’t tell you earlier.” He cleared his throat and continued. “You remember when you found out that Maxim was a fraud?” He asked and I nodded, anticipating what he had to say next.
“Yes, how can I forget?” I asked with a dry chuckle.
Alexander paused for a while and looked at me. Then he ran his hand through his hair and continued. “You know that he got arrested before you could even get a hold of him? It was me who ratted him out to the Feds.”
I let out a disbelieving scoff. “Are you serious?”
Alexander nodded. “Yes, I couldn’t just sit and not do anything about it after he hurt you badly. He deserved to be in jail for all the atrocities he committed.”
I felt the same way. Maxim deserved to be in jail.
But it would have been nice if Alexander had told me about it. It would have given me some sort of satisfaction knowing that we were the ones responsible for sending him to jail.
“Now it makes a lot of sense,” I replied, scratching the back of my head. “So he came back for revenge and was blaming his jail time on me.”
I was a bit confused when Riley told me that Maxim claimed I was the one who sent him to jail or something. I clearly remembered that the police took him before I could even get a hold of him.
Now that I had discovered the truth, everything made more sense. I wasn’t even surprised that Alexander was the one behind it. Why didn’t I think of that?
“I hope we are cool. I shouldn’t have kept it away from you.” Alexander asked, reaching out to my hand.
“I feel offended but I won’t let Maxim cause any rift between me and you.”
Alexander let out a relieved sigh and pulled me into a warm embrace. “Thank you, baby.” He expressed his gratitude as he gave me a forehead kiss. “You can go and see Maxim if you want, he’s still at the station.”
Was there any use in seeing him again? Alexander had already taken care of everything. After he hurt his daughter, I didn’t think Alexander would let him walk.
I was confused about what to do.
“I’ll think about it,” I whispered in Alexander’s ear. “Dinner is ready, are you hungry?” I asked Alexander and he nodded.
He went downstairs to eat but I remained in the room.
I pulled out my phone from my pocket and called Maya’s number. I wanted to tell her about what was happening and hear her opinion about what step I should take next.
Luckily enough, she answered on the first ring.
“Maya, we have found Riley, but you won’t believe who took her.” I decided not to beat around the bush and went straight to the point.
Besides, Maya has been blowing up my phone ever since she realized that Riley was missing. She asked to be kept in the loop because she wanted to know what was going on.
“Oh my goodness! It’s a good thing you’ve found her!” Maya let out a relieved sigh. “Who took her?” She asked with a hint of curiosity and concern in her voice.
Without hesitation, I responded. “Maxim! It was Maxim.”
“What?” Maya gasped in disbelief. “Maxim? I thought Maxim was in prison. Even though he has been released, why will he want to kidnap Riley?” The confusion in her voice was palpable.
“He claims that it was me who made him go to jail, so he came back for revenge,” I replied, running my fingers through my scattered hair.
“Is he out of his mind?” Maya exclaimed. “But you had nothing to do with his arrest. He was arrested because they found out that he was part of the mafia.”
Even Maya could recall what happened correctly.
“Yes, but I just found out that Alexander was behind it,” I replied, my voice barely audible. “I can’t even blame him for ratting Maxim out. Maxim deserved it after everything he did to me.”
Maya’s voice softened. “I’m sorry if his presence has reopened old wounds. I can’t help but blame myself for everything. I was the one who pushed for you to even give him a chance.”
“You don’t have to blame yourself, Maya. It’s been so many years and it doesn’t matter anymore.” I reassured her.
Maxim’s return didn’t open any old wounds. I was already at peace with what happened. I mean, he barely even crossed my mind.
I was happy with how my life turned out.
It was a good thing he even hurt me. I chose to see it as a blessing in disguise. If I was still with him, I wouldn’t have had the chance to start a family with Alexander and our kids.
Alexander was the perfect man for me.
“Are you sure?” Maya asked, her voice sad.
“Yes, Maya. I’m very sure.” I replied, my voice firm. “You just wanted me to be happy, you had no idea who he really was.”
“Yes, and I’m glad that you’re happy now.”
I nodded in agreement. “I wanted to hear your opinion on what I should do. I was contemplating going to the station to see him, but now, I don’t think there’s any reason to see him. He doesn’t deserve my presence. He should rot in jail for trying to harm my child.”
Maya agreed with me. “Yes, there’s no need to go there.” She replied. “How is Riley doing?” She asked, changing the subject.
“Riley is surprisingly fine. She’s just physically hurt but the doctor came over to administer some treatment.” I replied.
“That’s great to hear. Send my regards to her.”
Maya and I talked for a while before the call finally came to an end. I felt a little bit better after our conversation. Talking to Maya was actually therapeutic. I was lucky to have her in my life.
