I thought keeping the divorce papers away from Olivia and still staying together would change everything for the better. I hoped she would realize our marriage was at stake and act right.
But I was totally wrong. Even if we had known each other for years, the past few weeks felt like we were strangers living under the same roof.
No matter how hard I tried to tell her I had no idea Tricia was in town, she didn’t believe me and I had no way to convince her. It was as if we were in a cold war.
We couldn’t have a normal conversation anymore because she ended up bringing up the fact that I gave her divorce papers because of my ex-girlfriend.
It was getting out of hand and I wanted to be sure if she truly didn’t love me. At first, I thought she would protest against signing the divorce papers and try to be a better wife but it just made everything worse.
I asked my assistant to set up a meeting with Tricia. I knew the implications of what I was about to do but I needed to do it just to prove something.
Yes, I used to be in love with Tricia and I had always hoped she was going to be my wife, but everything changed when I met Olivia after we broke up.
I genuinely loved Olivia and I tried my best to show her that I did, but she started doubting me when I accidentally called Tricia’s name while we were having sex.
Tricia and I hadn’t seen each other in over half a decade and I was certain all the feelings I had for her were gone. Olivia was the woman in my life but she couldn’t just bring herself to trust me.
\[The car is ready to leave, sir.\]
A text from my driver came in and I picked up my coat and left my office. I was meeting with Tricia at a coffee shop in the city.
I was glad when my assistant confirmed Tricia agreed to meet up with me. Apart from my initial plan, I hadn’t seen her in a while and it would be good to catch up.
After a short drive, we arrived at the coffee shop. As I stepped out of the car, I could see Tricia already sitting through the transparent glass window.
She had a big smile on her face as I walked towards her booth. “Hey, Alexander.” She greeted me excitedly and gestured for me to sit on the empty seat beside her.
“Tricia, it’s nice to see you again.” She still looked as beautiful as ever. “Thank you for meeting me on such notice.”
Tricia smiled. “I’ve been wondering when you’d reach out to me ever since I returned.”
“So how have you been?” I asked her and she told me about everything that had been going on in her life. I realized she was back in New York because of a job offer.
After talking for a while, I decided to call the waiter so we could order something to eat.
“What would you like to have?” The waiter asked.
Before I could say anything, Tricia responded. “Two cups of grande iced caramel macchiato with extra whipped cream.”
My eyes widened in surprise. “You still remember that?” I asked, impressed. It was my go-to order back when we were still together.
“Of course I do.” She replied, her voice low and playful.
Soon enough, our orders arrived and the waiter placed the drinks in front of us with a smile. “Enjoy your drinks.” She said nicely before leaving the booth.
Tricia’s question caught me off guard. “So how is Olivia?” She asked, her eyes sparkling with curiosity. I never told her about Olivia because we hadn’t spoken to each other ever since she moved to Paris. “Why do you look surprised? Your business is always on the internet.” She teased.
She was right. Everything I did was scrutinized and posted by random blogs. I knew my meeting with Tricia was also going to be on the internet anytime soon.
“Olivia is fine,” I replied. I couldn't tell her my marriage was falling apart and I was just using her as a pawn in my little game.
“Okay, that’s great to hear,” Tricia replied.
“How about you? Are you seeing anybody?” I asked, shifting the focus from me.
Tricia shrugged. “Not really, nothing serious. I’m just focused on my career right now.” She replied and I nodded.
Tricia had always prioritized her career over anything. Even when she got the offer to go to Paris, I pleaded with her to decline it but she refused. Even when I promised to give her double the pay she was going to get.
“You still haven’t changed,” I said with a hint of amusement in my voice, making the both of us laugh. We kept on talking about random things until we got interrupted by the buzzing of my phone.
I pulled it out of my pocket and saw it was Olivia calling.
“The wife is calling.” Tricia teased me and I put the call on silent before placing my phone on the table. I was going to call her back after I left the coffee shop.
As I was about to speak, my phone started ringing again. I ignored it but she kept on calling multiple times. “Why won’t you pick up?” Tricia asked, raising a brow at me.
“I’ll call her after I leave here,” I said and turned off my phone. “I have something for you.” I added and Tricia’s face flushed with excitement as she saw me pull out a box from my pocket.
It was the necklace I had gotten from the auction a few weeks back. It was meant to be Olivia’s anniversary gift but I decided to use it for something else.
Tricia couldn’t contain her excitement as I put the necklace over her neck. It was very beautiful and was going to serve the purpose perfectly.
We stayed a few more minutes and soon it was time to leave. “Thank you for meeting me, it was nice catching up with you,” I said as we walked out of the building.
“It was nice seeing you, after so many years,” Tricia said as I walked her to her car. “Thank you for the gift.” She added and I hugged her goodbye before she got into her car. I watched her as she drove off before going back to my car.
“Sir, you need to see this.” My driver handed me his phone as I settled in the back seat. It was a post about my meeting with Tricia already circulating on the internet.
