Chapter 179 Walking Into A Death Trap

Chapter 179 Walking Into A Death Trap

 Juan's face turned ashen.

He had to go?

That was Zach's territory!

If he went, would he even make it back alive?

He instinctively looked at Terry, his eyes pleading.

"Dad, I don't want to go!"

Terry glared at him.

"Go! You have to go!"

"Chloe is your daughter. If you don't go, who will?"

"But Dad..." Juan tried again.

"No buts." Terry's voice was firm. "Reuben is willing to go. What's your excuse?"

"If you don't go, don't call me your father anymore!"

Juan fell silent under the rebuke.

He shrank back, his face full of reluctance.

"...Fine."

Skylar, sitting to the side, frowned.

"Reuben, I'm going with you."

Reuben immediately shook his head. "No."

"It's too dangerous. You can't come."

"But..." Skylar started to protest.

"Listen to me." Reuben took her hand, his tone softening. "Stay here and wait for me to come back."

"I'll be back soon."

Skylar bit her lip but finally nodded.

"...Okay."

"Just be careful."

"Don't worry." Reuben smiled faintly. "I'll be fine."

An hour later.

Reuben and Juan set off.

The car headed toward the outskirts.

Juan sat in the passenger seat, trembling all over.

"Do we really have to go?"

"Can't we... can't we think of another way?"

Reuben glanced at him but said nothing.

Juan swallowed and didn't dare speak again.

Halfway there, the car suddenly stopped.

Up ahead, a black Bentley blocked the road.

Travis stood beside it, his expression grim.

Reuben frowned and got out of the car.

"What are you doing here?"

Travis looked at him, his voice low. "I'm coming with you."

"Chloe... she's still my wife, after all."

Travis's expression showed internal conflict.

He didn't love Chloe—he'd married her for his own purposes.

But Skylar was right. He'd already hurt one woman and pushed her away.

He didn't want to hurt another.

Besides...

If only he'd finished the job back then and gotten rid of Amber for good...

Reuben raised an eyebrow.

"You're going?"

"Aren't you afraid of dying?"

"I am." Travis's voice was heavy. "But I'm more afraid of being responsible for another woman's death."

Reuben was silent for a moment.

"Fine."

"Come with us then."

Travis froze, seemingly surprised he'd agreed so readily.

He'd expected Reuben to refuse.

"Get in." Reuben's tone was flat. "Don't waste time."

"Alright."

Travis nodded and got in the car.

Three men, one car, continuing toward the outskirts.

The car was quiet. No one spoke.

Juan sat in the back, glancing between them, his panic growing.

How... how did they end up with one more person?

Wouldn't that make it even more dangerous?

Half an hour later, the car stopped in front of the church.

Zach's men were already waiting.

When they saw Reuben, their eyes lit up.

"Mr. Dickson, our Leader has been expecting you."

Reuben's expression was blank as he opened the door and stepped out.

Travis and Juan followed.

"Let's go." Reuben's voice was calm.

They followed the men into the church.

Inside, Zach sat beneath the crucifix, turning prayer beads in his hand.

When he saw Reuben, his eyes blazed with excitement as he stood.

"Reuben, long time no see."

His tone carried undisguised thrill.

Like a hunter spotting his prized prey.

Reuben stared at him coldly, saying nothing.

Zach smiled and waved his hand.

"Tie him up."

Several men rushed forward with rope.

"What are you doing!" Travis stepped forward, trying to intervene.

"Stay back." Zach shot him a cold look. "Unless you want to die, stay put."

Travis gritted his teeth and stopped.

He knew now wasn't the time to be reckless.

Reuben cooperated, letting them bind him.

Just as they tied the rope, his finger discreetly pressed a button on his sleeve.

The signal had been sent.

Zach walked up to him, looking him over with a satisfied smile.

"Reuben, look at you now."

"Back in the Northwest mines, when you had me cornered with nowhere to run, did you ever think you'd end up in my hands?"

Reuben stared at him coldly, silent.

Zach didn't seem bothered. In fact, he smiled even wider.

"What, nothing to say?"

"That's fine. We've got plenty of time."

He waved his hand.

"Hit him."

"A couple punches first. Collect some interest."

Two men immediately stepped forward, landing blow after blow on Reuben's body.

The dull thuds echoed through the empty church.

Reuben clenched his jaw, not making a sound.

Travis watched, his brow furrowed tight.

He wanted to say something but held back.

Now wasn't the time to be impulsive.

After a while, Zach waved his hand.

"Enough."

"Don't kill him."

The two men stopped and stepped back.

Blood trickled from the corner of Reuben's mouth, and his face had paled.

But his eyes remained ice-cold.

Zach looked at him, thoroughly pleased.

"That's more like it."

"Reuben, you have your day too."

Travis stepped forward, his voice firm. "Zach, where's Chloe?"

"You promised that if Reuben came, you'd let Chloe go."

Zach turned to him and smiled.

"What's the rush?"

"When Zach makes a promise, he keeps it."

He waved his hand.

"Bring Chloe out."

"Yes, Mr. Zach."

One of the men turned and went inside.

Before long, Chloe was brought out.

She had some bruises, and her face was pale, but she looked otherwise unharmed.

When she saw Travis, her eyes immediately turned red.

"Travis!"

She broke free from the guard's grip and ran toward him.

Travis opened his arms and held her tight.

"Chloe, are you okay?"

"I'm fine..." Chloe buried her face in his chest, crying. "I thought... I thought I'd never see you again..."

Travis gently patted her back, his voice low. "It's over now. It's all over."

Juan hurried over too, looking Chloe up and down.

"Chloe, how are you? Are you hurt anywhere?"

"Dad..." Seeing him, Chloe cried even harder.

"It's okay, it's okay. You're safe now." Juan exhaled in relief, then looked at Zach. "Zach, can we... leave now?"

Zach smiled and waved his hand.

"Go ahead."

Juan froze.

That... that easy?

He'd expected Zach to go back on his word.

"What are you waiting for?" Zach sneered. "Don't want to leave?"
