Chapter 172 Give Him a Grand Gift
Chapter 172 Give Him a Grand Gift
Reuben glanced at her and asked into the phone, "Do the Yorks know?"
"Probably not." Wolf said. "Our people are watching the Yorks. There's been no unusual activity."
"Travis apparently hasn't told them. And judging by how he told the police to keep quiet, he's probably afraid the Yorks will find out."
After hanging up, Reuben looked at Skylar.
"The Yorks don't know yet."
Skylar raised an eyebrow.
"They don't know?"
Her smile carried a hint of mockery.
"Travis is really something."
"His own wife goes missing, and he doesn't tell her family. Just quietly reports it to the police."
"Is he afraid the Yorks will blame him? Of course—he's still as selfish as ever!"
Reuben smiled.
"Who knows."
Skylar thought for a moment.
"Reuben."
"Mm?"
"What do you say we send Travis a big gift?"
Reuben raised an eyebrow.
"A gift?"
"Yes." Skylar nodded. "The Yorks don't know Chloe is missing, right?"
"Let's go tell them."
Reuben was momentarily caught off guard.
"Why do you suddenly want to tell the Yorks?"
"I'm disgusted by his selfish, self-serving behavior that disregards others' lives. Chloe is his current wife, yet he still puts his own interests first, just like when he repeatedly humiliated and hurt me for his own benefit. Him and Wilma—I won't let either of them off." As Skylar spoke, anger flared in her eyes.
"Alright." Reuben held her tightly, his heart aching for her. "If Travis dares to do it, he should face the consequences."
"He wants to hide it from the Yorks? We won't let him have his way. I won't spare anyone who's hurt you."
Reuben pulled out his phone. "I'll give the Yorks a heads up first."
He dialed a number.
"Hello, Old Mr. York?"
"This is Reuben."
Terry York on the other end was stunned.
Reuben?
Why would he be calling?
"Mr. Dickson?" Terry's voice carried surprise. "How did you..."
"Terry, my fiancée and I would like to pay you a visit." Reuben's tone was polite. "Would that be convenient?"
Terry was even more surprised.
Reuben wanted to visit him?
This was incredible!
So many people tried to curry favor with him and couldn't.
And now he was offering to visit?
Terry was overjoyed.
"Convenient! Of course it's convenient!"
"It would be our honor to have you, Mr. Dickson!"
"Good. We'll arrive in about an hour."
"Excellent! I'll be waiting!"
After hanging up, Terry could hardly believe it.
"Someone!"
"Mr. York, what do you need?"
"Quickly, clean up the house!"
"And have the kitchen prepare the finest dishes!"
"We have distinguished guests coming today!"
The servant was stunned.
Distinguished guests?
What guests could make Terry this excited?
But she didn't dare ask more questions and hurried off.
An hour later.
Skylar and Reuben arrived at the York residence.
The car pulled up outside the Yorks' villa.
Skylar got out and looked at the York family villa.
Quite impressive.
She just wondered whether Terry would still be smiling once he learned the truth.
Reuben walked over and put his arm around her shoulder.
"Ready?"
Skylar smiled.
"Of course."
They walked inside.
Just as they reached the entrance, Terry came out to greet them.
"Mr. Dickson! Welcome, welcome!"
He was beaming.
"Terry, you're too kind." Reuben smiled as well. "I hope we're not intruding."
Terry waved his hands repeatedly. "Having you here is an honor!"
"Please, come in! Come in!"
He ushered them inside.
As soon as they entered the living room, Skylar spotted a familiar figure.
Travis.
He was bustling about, looking every bit the dutiful grandson-in-law.
Skylar found it ironic.
His own wife was missing, yet he had the mind to put on this act.
Quite the talent.
Travis heard the voices and turned around.
Seeing Reuben and Skylar, he froze.
Thinking of Chloe, still missing, Travis felt his chest tighten.
What were they doing here?
Could it be...
His heart sank.
Travis forced himself to stay calm and walked over quickly.
"Mr. Dickson, Ms. Sterling."
He managed a strained smile.
"What brings you here?"
Reuben positioned himself in front of Skylar, giving Travis a cool glance.
"We're here to visit Terry."
"It has nothing to do with you."
Travis's face cycled between pale and flushed.
But he didn't dare argue back.
After all, he'd concealed Chloe's disappearance and was now worried these two might expose him.
Travis took a deep breath, suppressing his anger.
"Since you're here to visit Grandfather, please, have a seat."
He stepped aside.
Reuben ignored him, keeping his arm around Skylar as they walked past.
Travis stood there, fists clenched tight.
Watching Skylar's back, his expression was complicated.
Why did she have to come too?
Was she here to watch him be humiliated?
Before, he'd been on top of the world. Now he could only survive thanks to the York Group's investment...
Travis felt a pang in his chest.
Just then, Terry walked over.
"Travis, you know Mr. Dickson?"
Travis snapped back to attention and nodded.
"Yes, I do."
"Good, good." Terry smiled happily. "Since you're all acquainted, that makes this even better."
Travis forced a smile but said nothing.
Acquainted?
He and Reuben could hardly be called that.
The Yorks knew about his relationship with Skylar, yet they were still this enthusiastic, which could only mean...
They also had to defer to Reuben.
Travis sighed inwardly.
"Mr. Dickson, Ms. Sterling, please sit." Terry greeted them warmly. "Please, sit."
"Thank you, sir." Reuben nodded and sat down with Skylar.
Travis also took a seat.
He sat across from Skylar, his gaze occasionally drifting toward her.
Skylar acted as if she didn't notice, calmly sipping her tea.
Terry chatted with Reuben, and they got along well.
Though Reuben didn't say much, every word hit the mark.
The more Terry talked, the more impressed he became. Reuben was truly extraordinary.
No wonder he'd done so well in the city.
After chatting for a while, a servant came to announce that dinner was ready.
"Mr. Dickson, Ms. Sterling, shall we continue our conversation over dinner?" Terry invited.
"Sounds good." Reuben nodded.
Everyone stood and headed to the dining room.
Travis walked at the back, growing increasingly uneasy.
He had a feeling something bad was about to happen.
At the dinner table, the atmosphere was pleasant.
Terry kept toasting Reuben.
Reuben graciously accepted each one.
Skylar sat beside him, quietly eating.
When she did speak, her words were always perfectly timed.
Terry grew more and more satisfied.
This Mr. Dickson and Ms. Sterling—they were a perfect match.
So much better than his grandson-in-law.
Of course, he only thought this. He wouldn't dare say it aloud.
The meal was enjoyed by all.
After dinner, they returned to the living room.
After sitting for a while, Reuben stood up.
"Terry, it's getting late. We should be going."
"Ah, leaving so soon?" Terry was reluctant. "Stay a bit longer."
"We have other matters to attend to." Reuben smiled. "Next time we have the chance, we'll visit again."
"Alright, alright." Terry also stood. "Let me see you out."
Travis stood as well.
He felt relieved.
Finally, they were leaving.
He'd been afraid they'd say something they shouldn't.
Now it seemed he'd been overthinking.
They'd probably just come to visit his grandfather after all.
Travis's anxious heart finally settled.
Just then, Skylar turned to look at Travis, a meaningful smile on her lips.
