Chapter 163 True Amber
Chapter 163 True Amber
"Leave this to me. You don't need to worry about it." Reuben pulled her into his arms. "I'll make him regret ever being born."
Skylar leaned against him and nodded.
With Reuben here, she had nothing to fear.
Still, thinking of David's hypocritical face made her blood run cold.
"By the way," Skylar suddenly looked up at him, "I have an idea I want to run by you."
"What idea?"
"Have you ever thought about... running for office?" Skylar looked at him seriously. "Your influence already extends far beyond business."
Reuben paused, then chuckled. "Me? In politics?"
He was used to controlling everything from behind the scenes. The public battles of politics held no appeal.
"I'm serious." Skylar took his hand. "Think about it. People like David—they're parasites who exploit loopholes in the system to do terrible things while hiding behind respectability."
"If you had a higher position, you could eliminate this garbage from the source. Build a safer environment—not just for us, but for ordinary people like us."
Reuben studied her earnest expression. Something stirred inside him.
He'd truly never considered politics before.
To him, power only needed to be sufficient. No need to chase empty titles.
But Skylar's words forced him to consider it seriously.
She was right. If he had a higher position, the power to make the rules, he could protect Skylar and Eileen better.
And people like David would lose the soil they needed to flourish.
Perhaps...
This really was a path worth considering.
"I need to think about this carefully." Reuben was silent for a moment but didn't refuse.
"Mm, take your time. No rush." Skylar smiled, not pressing him.
The car glided into the night. Neither spoke again.
Skylar rested against Reuben's shoulder, eyes closed.
But unease lingered in her heart.
Wilma was still at large. Zach and Holy Grace Church lurked in the shadows. Now they had David, the pervert, to deal with too.
With all these people working together, who knew what they'd pull next.
She needed to stay sharp.
The next morning, Skylar was in a company meeting when her phone rang.
An unknown number.
She frowned but answered. "Hello?"
"Ms. Sterling?" The voice on the other end was urgent, tearful. "I'm Jade's friend. Jade, she... she's missing!"
Skylar's heart dropped. She shot to her feet. "What did you say? Jade disappeared?"
"Y-yes!" The voice broke into sobs. "She said she was going out to buy something yesterday and never came back. Her phone's off. I've been looking all night and can't find her. I'm afraid something happened..."
Skylar's face went pale.
Jade had evidence against Wilma. She was a key witness.
Her disappearance at this moment was no coincidence.
It had to be Wilma!
That vicious woman must have been afraid Jade would testify, so she had her abducted.
"Don't panic. Tell me everything you know." Skylar forced herself to stay calm. "Where did Jade disappear? When was the last time you contacted her?"
The friend tearfully explained the situation.
The more Skylar heard, the heavier her heart grew.
Jade had disappeared yesterday afternoon near the hospital. She'd gone for a follow-up on her injuries and never returned.
Security footage showed that shortly after leaving the hospital, she'd been taken by a black van.
"Got it. Thank you for telling me." Skylar hung up and immediately called Reuben.
"Reuben, Jade's missing." Her voice was tight. "It's almost certainly Wilma."
Reuben was silent for several seconds before responding coldly, "I'll have people search for her immediately."
"Wilma's a wanted fugitive. She's definitely hiding somewhere. If she has Jade, Jade could be in danger." Skylar bit her lip, guilt flooding through her.
Jade had only crossed Wilma because she'd helped Skylar. If anything happened to her, Skylar would never forgive herself.
"Don't worry. I'll do everything I can to find her." Reuben's voice was soothing. "Wilma's barely surviving herself. She probably won't hurt Jade right away. Most likely she's using her as a hostage to negotiate with us."
Despite his words, Skylar's anxiety wouldn't settle.
Wilma was unhinged. Who knew what she might do.
After hanging up, Skylar had no mind for the meeting.
She sat in her office, thoughts in chaos.
Jade's disappearance weighed on her like a stone.
She had people search all day. Not a single lead.
Jade had vanished without a trace.
Wilma was hiding too well.
Skylar's unease grew heavier.
But she had no idea that something even more shocking was coming.
Three days later, Skylar received an invitation.
A wedding invitation from Travis and Chloe.
The wedding was scheduled for this weekend.
Skylar stared at the invitation for a long moment.
Travis was getting married this quickly?
Why would he send her an invitation?
"What's wrong?" Reuben came over, wrapping his arms around her from behind, his chin resting on her shoulder. "Whose invitation?"
"Travis's wedding." Skylar handed it to him. "He's marrying Chloe."
Reuben glanced at it and raised an eyebrow. "Well, he moves fast."
"Should we go?" Skylar looked up at him.
"Why not?" Reuben smiled, pinching her cheek. "They sent an invitation. Not going would be rude, wouldn't it?"
Skylar thought about it. He had a point.
"Alright then. We'll go together." She nodded.
The weekend arrived quickly.
Though they'd decided to attend, they had no intention of sitting through the ceremony.
When they arrived, the wedding ceremony had just ended and guests were moving to the reception area.
"Where's Travis?" Skylar looked around but didn't see the groom.
Just then, a commotion erupted at the entrance to the ballroom.
Skylar followed everyone's gaze and froze.
Wilma had arrived.
And beside her was... Amber? Or Jade?
No, not Jade!
The way she looked at Skylar was completely different from Jade.
This was the real Amber!
Wilma had brought her actual daughter, trying to reenter high society.
Skylar wanted nothing more than to rush over and demand where Wilma had hidden Jade.
But reason held her back.
She couldn't do that.
Skylar's gaze sharpened as she stared at Wilma.
She'd see exactly what these two were planning to pull!
