Chapter 77 NOT ALL THREATS SNARL
AMBER’S POV
Going to the privacy of my room, I opened the letter, my heart thundering with every minute that passed. I had a sinking feeling that all of this was going to be bad. My pack never sent me letters, except when something bad happened and I knew this was the case. Something had happened and this was the reason why they had sent me this letter.
“What is this?” I mummured, tearing open the seal.
As I read the contents of the letter, my heart rate spiked up. Dread washed over me as my eyes scanned the rest of the letter. My mother had been attacked and they were only telling me now even though two days had passed already.
“Oh no.” My eyes swelled with tears.
My body shook as the realization of what had happened dawned on me. I had no doubt that it was Soul who was responsible for this, this was what he wanted ever since and to think that he had done this right under our nose was the very thing that shocked me.
The more I thought about it, the more confused I became because I knew I couldn’t fight this alone. If I was to get any type of justice for my mother, it was now, without a moment’s delay. But still, I didn’t want anyone else meddling into my affairs because I knew it would only make it worse and worse wasn’t what I wanted.
Soul’s plan was to conquer all the packs and rule every single wolf and I knew he wouldn’t stop until he got what he wanted. If he began with attacking my mother, I knew there were many more to come. That was just the thing about him.
His final plans were to keep only one pack, making it exist, so he could rule as the head and have total control of all the affairs of the pack. That was his plan and I couldn’t sit back and allow that to happen.
For as long as we could remember, he had been a thorn in our side, taking and doing things that spoke against every pack rule we stood for. There were times when I wondered if he was even sensible to begin with based on all the things he usually said and did.
I knew the relationship he had with my mom, that was a past of mine that I didn’t want to remember but the more I thought about it, the more worried I became because my mother wasn’t supposed to be in the mix at all. It was awfully wrong with her being there and now, she was suffering for it.
“How will I survive this?” I muttered.
Just then, Derek walked into the room, a worried look on his face. I loved that he honored my wishes by not reading that letter, that spoke a lot about the kind of person he was and I was grateful for that one little act of consideration.
“Are you okay?” he asked, shutting the door behind me.
Over the past few days, I realized he had somewhat changed towards me, he wasn’t as harsh as he used to be and now, he wanted to actually know me not just for me but for who I was as a person. It was more than I could thank him for but now, I couldn’t tell him about this, knowing that he was also at loggerheads with the pack.
“I… don’t think I want to bother you with any of this,” I said.
This was a past of mine that I had kept so hidden from him and bringing him in would definitely cause trouble, the kind of trouble I couldn’t afford to have. I hated that he had been very open to me in recent times but right now, I was not reciprocating the energy.
At this point, I couldn’t even trust my mother because who knew if all of this wasn’t just a gimmick, a trick to lure me towards them. I had come to know Soul as someone who couldn’t be trusted and at this point, I knew I needed to be extra careful.
“Amber, you need to talk to me. I know it’s about the letter you received. Did anything happen to the pack?” he asked.
How could I tell him when I knew he would definitely wage war against them? He was going to win and when he did, there would be many casualties, that was certain. I needed to handle this all on my own.
“Trust me, I’ll be fine. I don’t want to drag you into something that doesn’t concern you. I know you have your own issues to deal with.” I said.
“And you expect me to remain quiet, I know that whatever is going on has to be serious for you to react this way.”
Running his hands through his hair, he paced, trying to find a solution to this but I wasn’t forthcoming simply because I wanted to keep him safe for what I knew was ahead.
“Arr you trying to protect me?” he asked, confusion written on his face.
I managed to break a smile, staring at him and he knew then that was exactly what I said.
“You don’t need to do that. Hell, what’s that even supposed to mean?” he asked.
“Because I know the kind of people involved in this. Derek, I might not be as outspoken as you like or fit the standard of a Luna you require but one thing I wouldn’t do is to put you or anyone in this pack in harm’s way. I would never do that so please believe me when I say I will handle it all by myself.” I said.
He looked like he wanted to argue but one look at myself held him back. There were many things he wanted to say, things that might cause more arguments but the pleading look in my eyes was enough to shut him up.
“I’ll do as you say but if I find out this is beyond you, i’ll step in whether you like it or not.” He said, firmly.
And with that
, he walked out of the room, slamming the door shut.
