Chapter 66 THE EDGE OF TRUST
AMBER’S POV
I was on the verge of sleep when a knock sounded at the door of my room. “Who is there? I say,” wondering who was knocking this late.
I open the door, and a guard stands outside, holding a letter in his hand. “Luna,” he says, bowing slightly. “Is the Alpha in here with you?” He asks.
“No,” I say, folding my hands gently across my chest. “He went to Moonfall Ridge.” A look of uncertainty flashes across the guard's face.
He hesitates for a moment, his gaze moving from my face to the letter in his hands, then back to my face. My eyes widen as I immediately recognize the Spirit pack’s seal on the letter.
“Is that for me?” I ask, pointing to the letter in his hands.
“Um... Yes, Luna, the letter is directed to you, but the Alpha instructed that all letters pass through him before they get to you.” He says
“Well, he's not here right now, is he? I'll handle it,” I say, reaching out for the letter.
“Yes, Luna,” he answers, handing over the letter before taking a slight bow to leave. I close the door behind him, and for a moment, I remain transfixed at my spot.
I stare at the letter in my hands, and the first thing I notice is my name written in bold letters across it. I moved to sit on my bed before finally unfolding the letter.
A sense of dread immediately falls on me as soon as I read the content of the letter.
“Amber, your mother has been attacked.” The words blurred at first, and my mind refused to accept what I was reading. My hand tightened around the letter as I carefully read the rest of it.
The letter stated that she had been attacked by wolves wearing the Blood Moon pack's crests. A cold shiver runs down my spine. “Her wolf is gravely injured, but she is still alive.” It read further
“We do not know whether this attack was deliberate or carried out by those hiding behind borrowed crests. But the damage has been done. The elders are angry, but your father has been struggling to keep them from demanding blood.” The last line of the letter read. My chest tightens as I finish reading the letter, followed by a strange stillness.
I fold the letter and place it on the table beside me, instinctively placing my hands over my stomach, and the pups stir faintly. I wonder what would have happened if Derek were here.
I would never have gotten the letter, and I would never have known about this pack’s wickedness. The pack I worked so hard for, so that they could accept me. It's no surprise that they are all cold, heartless monsters.
Why did they have to go as far as attacking my mother, though? My life was already miserable enough in this place, but did they have to make it worse?
My mind drifts back to the night Derek told me about the way my pack was responsible for his mother's death. Could this be his way of getting back at me? Is Derek the mastermind behind the attack?
My mind is in turmoil as different thoughts and reasons why the blood moon pack attacked my mom run through my head. I debate running back to my pack immediately, but I know the guards at the borders wouldn't let me, and I immediately kick against that idea.
I take the folded letter from the table and hide it in the pocket of a coat I barely wear. I need a way to get out of here. Fast before Derek found out I heard about my mother and forbids me from going back to my pack.
I shudder at the cool breeze that seeped through the open window, and realization hit me that I am not safe here, and neither are my unborn children.
A soft click sounds on the door, and my body stiffens immediately. I quickly slip into the covers before Derek walks in and the room is filled with his scent, making my wolf purr quietly.
I feel him pause and stare at me, forcing my breathing to slow, my lashes lowering as I pretended to sleep before the bed dipped beside me, and his scent filled my nose. I stay still, my heart pounding as his arm brushes the mattress near mine.
He said nothing, and neither did I.
