Chapter 211

"You don't understand, Dee." Yemi's voice trembled, almost breaking under the weight of the words he was trying to say. His eyes were wide, his face pale as if something had drained every ounce of life from him in the span of just a few moments. "I never wanted this to happen. You have to believe me."

I wanted to shout at him, to demand why, but the words stuck in my throat. Instead, I stood there in the dim light of our living room, staring at the man I had once trusted completely. Everything had been perfect, hadn’t it? We had come so far, fought so many battles—together. And now, with a single phone call, everything was unraveling in front of me.

It all started with the phone call. The one we hadn’t been expecting. The one that hit us like a freight train.

“Dee, it’s about your sister.” The voice on the other end had been shaky, filled with an undertone of something I couldn’t place at first. “She’s gone. It’s… it’s bad. We need you to come to the hospital. Now.”

The world shifted beneath my feet. My sister. My little sister. The one person I promised I would always protect. My heart felt like it had been ripped out of my chest as I dropped the phone, unable to breathe, unable to think straight. And then, before I could process anything, I was running—Yemi following closely behind.

Now here we were, in our home—our sanctuary—where nothing had ever seemed more fragile. I needed him to be strong for me, to hold me together like he always had. Instead, I found him in pieces.

“Yemi, what’s going on?” I asked, my voice strained. “Why did you look at me like that when I walked into the room? What aren’t you telling me?”

He swallowed hard, his fingers twitching at his sides. I could see the fear in his eyes, but there was something else there too—something I hadn’t expected. Guilt. It weighed on him like a heavy burden, and for a moment, I wondered if it was a burden he had been carrying alone for far too long.

“It’s my fault, Dee,” he whispered, barely above a breath. “I should’ve protected her. I should’ve known this was coming, but I—”

His words trailed off, and I stepped forward, my mind reeling. My heart was still racing, but now it wasn’t just fear for my sister. It was for the man standing in front of me, the man who seemed so distant in that moment. “What are you talking about?”

Yemi took a step back, his gaze falling to the ground. He wasn’t looking at me anymore, wasn’t looking anywhere. He was lost in something only he could see. I could feel the tension in the air like a storm waiting to break. And then, in one sharp, painful moment, he looked up, his eyes filled with more regret than I had ever seen in them before.

“I’m the one who pushed her into this, Dee. I was the one who… who let her get involved in that mess. I—”

My head spun as the words hit me like bricks. My sister’s life had been disrupted by something—someone—Yemi had brought into her world? My chest tightened. “What mess? Who did this to her?”

The truth came crashing down then, all at once. Yemi didn’t have to say another word. I could see it in his eyes—the horror of the mistake he had made, the crushing weight of his choices. My sister had been caught up in something dangerous. Someone from his past had manipulated her into believing they could offer her everything she had ever wanted, and now, the consequences were unimaginable.

“You were trying to protect me from it,” I whispered, my voice breaking. “You didn’t want me to know what was happening. That’s why you kept everything from me.”

He nodded slowly, his face contorting in agony. “I didn’t want to see her hurt. I didn’t want to see you hurt. I thought… I thought I could fix it before it was too late.”

“But you didn’t,” I said bitterly. “And now everything is falling apart.”

The weight of the truth crashed over me, and I felt like I was drowning in it. Yemi had kept secrets from me—big ones. The kind of secrets that could destroy everything we had fought for. The love we’d built, the future we’d planned. Was it all a lie? Or had we both just been too naive to see what was truly happening behind the scenes?

I turned away from him, my hands trembling. I needed space. I needed to think. The room was closing in on me, suffocating me with the pressure of everything that had been left unsaid.

“I never meant for this to happen,” Yemi said, his voice thick with regret. “But now, we have to fix this, Dee. We have to save her. We have to save our family.”

I spun back around, my face flushed with anger, betrayal, and hurt. “Do you think it’s that easy? That we can just fix this with a few words?” I took a step toward him, my eyes burning with unshed tears. “I don’t even know who you are anymore, Yemi. I thought I knew you. But now… I don’t know if I can trust you again.”

The silence between us stretched, thick and suffocating. Yemi looked like he wanted to reach for me, but his hands hung limply at his sides. The weight of everything between us was too much. I couldn’t breathe, couldn’t think. The tragedy that had already shattered my world now felt like it was splintering the very foundation of everything I thought I knew about us.

The doorbell rang, breaking the tense silence like a gunshot. My heart skipped a beat. Who could it be?

Yemi and I exchanged a glance. He swallowed hard, and without saying a word, he stepped toward the door.

I stayed frozen in place, unsure of what to do, unsure of what to expect. But before Yemi could open it, the door flung open on its own.

Standing there, framed by the doorway, was someone I had never expected to see again.

“We need to talk,” he said, his voice cold and commanding.
