Chapter 200
“Do you ever wonder if we’re living someone else’s dream?” I whisper, my fingers intertwined with Yemi’s as we sit on the balcony, watching the first light of dawn paint the sky in soft hues of pink and gold.
Yemi turns his head slowly, his expression thoughtful, as he looks at the horizon. He doesn’t answer immediately, but the way he squeezes my hand tells me he’s not brushing me off. It’s as if my question has somehow caught him off guard, like he hasn’t considered the possibility of this life being anything but our own.
“I used to,” he says finally, his voice quiet but steady. “I used to wonder if I was just living a part someone else wrote for me. But now…” He pauses, his gaze locking onto mine, steady and unwavering. “Now, I know this is our story. Our dream.”
His words settle into me, soothing a part of me that’s always wondered if I deserved this. If we deserved this—this peace, this love, this life we’re building together. We’ve been through so much to get here, fought battles both external and within, but somehow, in this moment, it all feels… right. It feels like we’ve arrived at the place we were always meant to be.
“Do you ever regret it?” I ask, half teasing, but there’s a truth behind the question. The kind of truth that lingers beneath the surface, unspoken but always there.
Yemi raises an eyebrow, his lips curling into a smile that’s half amused, half fond. “Regret what? Choosing you?” he asks, his voice playful, but his eyes say everything. “Not in a million years.”
I laugh softly, but my heart races a little faster. Every time he looks at me like that, as if I’m the only person in the world, I feel both grounded and weightless all at once. It’s a strange kind of magic, the way he makes me feel like anything is possible, like everything is worth it because we’re doing it together.
The breeze picks up, ruffling my hair as the sun rises higher, spilling golden light over everything. I close my eyes for a moment, breathing in the fresh air, letting the peace of the morning wash over me. But even as I savor the calm, a nagging thought lingers in the back of my mind. Something feels… off.
“Yemi,” I say quietly, breaking the silence. “What do you think the future holds for us? After everything, after all the storms we’ve weathered, what happens now?”
Yemi’s hand tightens around mine, his voice steady as he answers. “Whatever happens, Dee, we’ll face it together. We’ve made it this far, and nothing will change that. I trust you. I trust us.”
His words are a balm, soothing the uncertainty creeping up inside me, but I can’t shake the feeling that something is on the horizon. Something unexpected, something that could change everything. The past few weeks have been a blur of sweet moments, laughter, and tenderness, but there’s always been an undercurrent of tension between us, something we haven’t fully addressed. The question of what happens after the healing, after the forgiveness, after we’ve picked up the broken pieces.
I glance at Yemi, trying to read the subtle shifts in his expression, but he’s a master at hiding what he’s feeling, especially when it comes to the deep stuff. The things that hurt. The things we don’t talk about. I want to ask him, want to dig deeper, but the words are stuck in my throat, tangled with my own fears.
“I think,” I begin, trying to steady my breath, “that no matter how much we think we’re ready, the future always has a way of surprising us.”
Yemi tilts his head, studying me with a thoughtful expression. “Surprising us how?”
I bite my lip, suddenly unsure of how to voice the doubt that’s settled in my heart. “I don’t know. But we’ve both been through so much. And we’ve built something beautiful, but what if… what if something happens that tests us in ways we can’t control?”
The vulnerability in my voice hangs between us, thick and palpable. For a moment, Yemi says nothing, just watches me with that deep, knowing gaze, as if he’s looking right into the heart of my fears. And then, just as I’m about to pull away, to retreat into my own doubts, he leans forward, brushing his lips gently against mine.
“Dee, there’s nothing we can’t handle together,” he says, his voice steady and sure. “I promise you that.”
I feel the weight of his promise settle in my chest, warm and comforting. And yet, something inside me still isn’t at peace. I wish I could fully embrace the certainty he offers, the reassurance that we’ll always be fine, but I can’t shake the feeling that we’re on the verge of something—something big. Something that might shake the very foundation we’ve built.
“I want to believe that,” I admit, my voice a little more fragile than I intended. “But sometimes, I wonder if we’re really as ready for the future as we think we are.”
He looks at me for a long moment, his brow furrowing slightly as if he’s considering my words carefully. Then, with a soft sigh, he pulls me closer, wrapping his arms around me. “We’ll never be fully ready. But that doesn’t mean we can’t face it together.”
I nestle into his chest, feeling the steady beat of his heart beneath my ear. I wish I could take comfort in his words, in the certainty that everything will be okay, but there’s a nagging feeling deep in my gut that won’t go away. Something is coming, something we haven’t accounted for, and no matter how much we trust each other, no matter how strong our love is, I can’t help but wonder if it will be enough.
The quiet between us stretches on, and for a moment, the world feels like it’s holding its breath. We’re standing on the edge of something, and I can’t shake the feeling that it’s about to change everything.
Just then, the sound of a phone buzzing breaks the silence. I pull back slightly, my eyes meeting Yemi’s in a silent question. He hesitates for a moment before reaching into his pocket and pulling out his phone. He looks at the screen, his brow furrowing slightly.
“What is it?” I ask, the unease creeping back into my voice.
Yemi doesn’t answer immediately. He simply stares at the phone, his face unreadable, before swiping the screen to answer.
“Yemi,” a voice says on the other end, sharp and urgent. “We need to talk. Now.”
His grip tightens around my hand, and I can feel the tension in his body. Whatever this is, it’s not good.
“I’ll be right there,” he says, his voice calm but his eyes betraying a hint of concern.
He hangs up, and for a moment, we just stare at each other, the weight of what just happened settling over us.
“What was that about?” I ask, my heart racing.
Yemi looks at me, his jaw tightening. “I don’t know. But whatever it is, it’s not over yet.”
I nod, the knot in my stomach tightening. As much as I want to believe in the future we’ve built, as much as I want to believe in us, I can’t shake the feeling that this is just the beginning of something much bigger.
And I don’t know if we’re ready for it.
