Chapter 198

“Are you sure you’re okay?” Yemi asks, his voice tinged with concern. He’s standing in front of me, his brow furrowed as he looks me over. I know the question is coming from a place of love, but right now, all I can think about is the storm we’re facing.

I swallow hard, trying to push down the anxiety building in my chest. It’s been days since Victor’s call, and the tension between us has only grown. We haven’t spoken about it much, both of us avoiding the elephant in the room. But it’s impossible to ignore now. It’s all we think about, and every time we look at each other, the weight of it hangs between us.

“I’m fine,” I say, though the words feel empty even as I say them. How can I be fine when I know what’s coming? How can I pretend to be okay when everything feels like it’s unraveling?

Yemi doesn’t buy it. His gaze sharpens, studying me with a look that says he knows me too well. “You don’t have to pretend with me, Dee.”

I want to tell him everything—that I’m terrified, that I don’t know how much longer I can keep pretending everything is normal. But there’s a part of me that refuses to let go of the strength I’ve fought so hard to build. I’ve always been the one to hold things together, the one who steps in when others fall apart. I can’t show weakness now. Not when everything is on the line.

“I’m just… tired,” I finally say, my voice cracking slightly despite my best efforts to keep it steady. “Tired of waiting for the other shoe to drop. Tired of feeling like everything is slipping through my fingers.”

Yemi steps closer, his hands coming to rest on my shoulders. His touch is gentle, but firm, grounding me in the moment. “We’ll face this together, Dee. Whatever happens, we’ll do it side by side. You don’t have to carry this alone.”

I look up at him, the sincerity in his eyes cutting through the fog of my fear. He’s always been there for me, through every challenge, every heartbreak. I’ve leaned on him before, but now… now it feels different. It feels like everything I’ve ever feared might come true.

And yet, as much as the fear threatens to swallow me whole, there’s a part of me that believes him. I want to believe him. If anyone can weather this storm, it’s us. Together.

“Victor isn’t going to stop,” I say, my voice barely above a whisper. “We both know that.”

Yemi nods slowly, his face hardening. “No, he won’t. But we don’t have to let him win. We’re stronger than he thinks.”

The words are meant to reassure me, but they only stir up more questions. How do we fight someone like Victor? How do we protect everything we’ve built when he’s already taken so much from us?

I shake my head, a knot forming in my stomach. “I don’t know if I’m strong enough, Yemi. I don’t know if we’re strong enough.”

Yemi’s hands tighten on my shoulders, pulling me closer to him. “You are,” he says, his voice fierce with conviction. “And I’ll make sure we’re strong enough. I’m not going to let you go through this alone.”

I wish I could believe him fully. I wish I could silence the doubts that keep creeping into my mind. But the truth is, the fear is bigger than both of us now. We’ve survived so much, but this feels different. This time, we’re up against someone who won’t back down, someone who knows how to play the game, how to push us to our limits.

“Yemi…” I begin, my voice shaky. “What if we can’t stop him? What if—what if this time, he wins?”

His grip on me tightens, and I feel the heat of his gaze on me, steady and unwavering. “Then we’ll fight harder. Together. We’ve always found a way before, haven’t we?”

I nod slowly, trying to let his words sink in, trying to let them drown out the fear that threatens to swallow me whole. “Yeah, but… what if this time, the cost is too high?”

Yemi’s expression softens, his hands sliding down to my arms, holding me gently but firmly. “Dee, we can’t predict what’s going to happen. But we’ve already made it through so much. We’ve faced the darkness and come out stronger on the other side. We’ll do it again.”

I want to believe him. I want to believe that everything we’ve been through—the lies, the betrayals, the heartache—has led us to this point for a reason. That together, we can face anything. But I know deep down that it’s not going to be easy. And no matter how much I want to hold onto the hope that we’re invincible, I know that the road ahead will test us in ways we can’t even begin to imagine.

“Yemi…” I start, but before I can finish, the sound of the doorbell rings through the apartment. My heart skips a beat, and for a moment, I feel like the world has stopped. It’s an odd feeling, the kind of stillness that settles over you when you know something is about to change.

Yemi’s eyes flick to the door, his expression unreadable. He steps back, his hand slipping from mine, and for a moment, I wonder if he’s thinking the same thing I am. Could it be Victor? Could it be the beginning of whatever he’s planning?

“I’ll get it,” Yemi says, his tone calm, but there’s a sharpness to it that I recognize. He’s on high alert now, his protective instincts kicking in.

I nod, but I don’t move. I can’t tear my eyes away from the door, my body stiff with anticipation. Every second feels like an eternity as I wait for him to return, to tell me what’s happening, to reassure me that it’s nothing.

But when Yemi opens the door, my heart stops. The figure standing there isn’t someone I recognize. It’s a man in a suit, his face stern and serious, holding an envelope in his hand. My stomach churns as I take in the sight of him. This isn’t good.

“Who is it?” I call out, my voice tight with dread.

Yemi turns to look at me, his face ashen, his jaw set in a hard line. “I don’t know. But I think it’s about to get a lot more complicated.”

My pulse quickens as I move toward the door, my mind racing with questions. What does this mean? What does he want?

And as the man hands Yemi the envelope, I know that everything we’ve fought for is about to be tested in ways we never expected.
