285 - Ella Carter

285 - Ella Carter
Ella Carter

A few days had passed since Leon and I said our “I do” by the sea, our feet in the sand and our eyes brimming with love. Noronha had been our refuge: an island of peace amidst stormy seas. I slept peacefully with him every night, feeling him complete me.

Waking up with the sun warming us made me forget that there was a world out there waiting for us. A world filled with problems and necessary decisions to be made.

The world was calling. And I knew that, sooner or later, I would have to wear the Walker name again, as armor, as a banner. Today was that day.

My heels echoed across the marble floors of Walker Corporation’s headquarters, a reminder that my presence there was both symbolic and definitive. The shareholders were waiting, curious and anxious. Some of them, without a doubt, were skeptical. What could they expect from a young heiress, newly married, who hadn’t even finished college?

But there was one thing they didn’t know: I wasn’t here to please anyone.

I was here, to be honest.

When I stepped out of the elevator, the familiar scent of the executive floor hit me like a childhood memory. Of the times I was on vacation and, under the watchful eyes of my aunt and grandfather, played here with Léo and Scott while my father worked at the company. This was a place of happy memories, where Léo, Scott, and I used to have fun in empty meeting rooms while the adults discussed numbers.

As I exited the elevator, there he was. My grandfather. Noah Walker.

"My princess," he said, opening his arms with that firm smile of his, although a little tired. "You look stunning. And you have the same look your grandmother had when she made an important decision for herself, decades ago."

I hugged him tightly. His scent, of aged wood, leather, and mint, always calmed me.

"Grandpa…" I murmured. "Thank you for receiving me. I need to talk to you before the meeting."

We walked in silence to his office. He waited for me to sit down before settling into his leather chair.

"Let me guess…" he said, fingers interlaced beneath his chin. "You’re going to tell me you’re ready to take over all of this."

I smiled, but it wasn’t a victorious smile. It was a serene one, the kind that comes with clarity.

"Actually, no. I’m not ready because that’s not what I want."

Grandpa frowned, and I was surprised that he didn’t look surprised.

"So…?"

"I want to step away from my share. From the inheritance. And from the possibility of one day becoming president."

During the days Leon and I spent on our honeymoon, we talked about this. And he’s right, there’s no need to wait for something that, eventually, will become ours anyway. More than that, I want to protect the image of the company, which was my grandfather’s life and became my father’s, from anything that could tarnish its reputation with shareholders and investors.

"Are you serious?"

I nodded.

"Grandpa, the company is beautiful. It’s strong. But knowing what I know now, my heart is no longer here…" I began. "I love our family, our stories. And I want to keep honoring all of that, but from a different place."

He remained silent for a long moment. Long enough to make my heart race.

"You know you’ll be questioned for this, don’t you?" he said at last. "I understand why you’re choosing to step away, and even though I don’t want to accept it, it’s okay."

My eyes filled with tears. I knew what my grandfather thought mattered more than any shareholder.

He stood up and walked to the window. He stayed there for a while, looking out at the city. Then he turned back to me with glistening eyes.

"I was afraid you’d live in the shadow of our name, Ella, just like I worry about the choices your cousin Olivia is making."

Olivia’s choices were no longer a secret to the family, even though my uncle Dylan was against her relationship and was doing everything in his power to keep them apart.

"I understand that with your marriage to Leon and everything that comes with it, it makes sense that your attention, effort, and dedication are now focused on learning how to protect yourself."

I felt the tears forming and wiped the corners of my eyes.

"That makes me prouder of you than anything else."

My grandfather walked over and took my hands in his.

"You will always have a place here. As an advisor, as an owner, and as my granddaughter. But now… now go and build your world. Be Ella Carter. The woman who didn’t need a throne to be a queen."

My eyes filled with tears. And at that moment, in that room where so many cold deals had been sealed, we sealed the most beautiful one of all, my grandfather’s respect for me.

"Thank you, Grandpa. For trusting me and for not trying to change my mind."

"How could I?" he laughed, kissing my forehead. "You’re more like your grandmother than you know. And she never accepted being less than what she dreamed."

I left the executive floor with a weight lifted off my shoulders and my soul lighter than ever. I was still a Walker. But now, I was also a Carter. And that gave me the strength to build something of my own.

My name, my own story.

And above all, my legacy.

The meeting in the executive boardroom had already begun when I walked in. The heavy wooden door closed behind me with a dry click, sealing a moment that would change not only my path but also the future of Walker Corporation.

I walked calmly to the head of the table, where my grandfather Noah was already seated, waiting for me. The shareholders were there, men and women who had watched my father grow up, who had profited from his decisions, and who now looked at me as if assessing an uncut diamond.

Some of them looked at me with expectation. Others with doubt. And some stared with pure skepticism.

I swallowed my nerves and let my posture guide me. I sat down gracefully and, for a few seconds, allowed silence to speak for me. My grandfather opened with a brief introduction, as he always did, until he passed the word to me.

"Gentlemen, thank you all for being here. I know you expected today to be the day I, Ella Walker Carter, would take my position as the company’s future leader. But I'm here to tell you that is not what’s going to happen."

A murmur spread through the room. I raised my hand, keeping my tone calm but firm.

"This company has been home to great leaders, my grandfather, my father, and my uncles. I grew up admiring everything that was built here. But… it's time to admit something."

My grandfather gave me a slight smile. That silent smile of approval.

"My path lies elsewhere."

Everyone's gaze turned surprised, but I wasn't intimidated. I kept speaking.

"Today, with the support of my grandfather and my family, I announce my abdication of succession. My share of the inheritance will go to my brothers, Léo and Scott Walker. And together, they will have the opportunity to show who is best prepared to lead Walker into the future."

Faces around the table shifted between shock, understanding, and, in some cases, relief.

Then I looked at my grandfather, who made it clear he wasn’t done yet.

"And with that…" he said, slowly rising from the chair beside me, "I announce my official retirement."

The silence was almost reverent now. All eyes turned to the man who had led the company with a steady hand for decades.

"From today onward, Walker Corporation enters a new era." He placed one hand on Léo’s shoulder, who was seated two chairs away from me. "One of my grandsons will assume the role of CEO. But it will not be an automatic inheritance. It will be earned."

Léo looked at him with wide eyes. Scott, on the other side of the table, raised his eyebrows in surprise.

"What do you mean, Grandpa?" Scott asked, curious but not sarcastic.

"I mean that the position will go to the grandson who proves to be the most determined, the most capable of taking this company further. Time will reveal who that man is. And I will be watching from afar, with pride."

Léo nodded, and so did Scott. Neither seemed to be in competition. It was as if they both understood that the decision wasn’t about power, but about merit.

My grandfather turned to me one last time in front of everyone.

"And as for Ella. She is destined for another empire. Alongside the Carter family, she will become one of the most prominent social and philanthropic voices of her generation. As her grandmother dreamed, as her mother inspires, and as her mother-in-law Laís Carter is already organizing. New York will be her stage. And the world, her legacy."

My hands trembled slightly beneath the table, but my heart was at peace.

I stood and faced the room with confidence. And I said:

"I’m not giving up my power. I’m choosing a different kind of power…"

We talked for quite some time. My brothers remained quiet, as they still had no idea what to do at that moment. I watched as all the shareholders left once the meeting ended. I lifted my gaze when my grandfather stood up, and I reached out my hand, which he held firmly.

"You’re going to soar higher than anyone ever expected, Ella. And the best part? With someone you love."

I smiled and embraced him. At that moment, with my choice, I knew I had become someone beyond the Walker name.
