Chapter 8 FINAL CONFRONTATION

Chapter 8 FINAL CONFRONTATION
The vibrating phone felt like a live wire in Annabella's hand. She stared at the screen, her heart hammering against her ribs. The name “Killian Astor” glowed on the display, a stark reminder of the chaotic night that had upended her life. She looked up at Claire, who was perched on the edge of the sofa, a half-eaten pint of ice cream forgotten on the coffee table.
“He’s at the door,” Annabella whispered, the words barely audible.
Claire’s eyes went wide. “What? Already?”
Annabella nodded, her mind racing. Just moments ago, she had been wrestling with the idea of a paternity test, of facing this reality head-on. She hadn't expected the reality to show up on her doorstep. With a shaky hand, she answered the call.
“Hello?”
“Annabella, I'm at your door. We need to talk.” Killian’s voice was as cold and sharp as ever, but there was an underlying tremor of urgency that she had never heard before.
She didn’t respond, just walked to the door and unlocked it. Killian stood in the hallway, his tall frame filling the space, a storm cloud of a man in an impeccably tailored suit. But he wasn’t alone. Just behind him, with a softer, more concerned expression, was Luciano. The sight of them both, two titans of industry reduced to standing on her doormat, made her head spin.
“Annabella, please,” Luciano began, stepping forward.
Killian’s hand shot out, stopping him. “This is my business, Luciano. She's my assistant. And my... problem.” The last word was laced with a possessiveness that sent a shiver down Annabella’s spine.
"Your problem?" Luciano's voice hardened. "I was there too, Astor. And I have every right to be a part of this."
Annabella felt a sob rise in her throat. She had been so determined to be in control, to handle this on her own. But here she was, standing between two men who saw her as a prize to be claimed, a problem to be solved. She took a deep breath, pushing past them into the hallway.
“Both of you, stop,” she said, her voice stronger than she expected. “This isn’t a corporate merger. This is my life. And my baby’s.”
Killian's hard expression softened for a fraction of a second. “Annabella, I know this is difficult. But we can’t have the Astor heir living in... this.” He gestured to her modest apartment building with a subtle but dismissive sweep of his hand. “You need to come home with me. I’ll make sure you and the baby are taken care of. The best doctors, security, anything you need. Just name it.”
Luciano scoffed. “She isn’t some possession you can just acquire, Killian. Annabella, you know I’m not like him. I’ll give you space, time. We can figure this out together, just the two of us. Away from all of this chaos.” He stepped closer, reaching for her hand. “I’ve already spoken to a lawyer. We can file for a restraining order against him if we need to. He won’t be able to touch you or the baby.”
The mention of lawyers and restraining orders made Annabella’s stomach clench. This was spiraling out of control faster than she could have ever imagined. She pulled her hand away from Luciano, stepping back.
“I’m not a part of a deal, and I’m not a pawn in your rivalry,” she said, her voice shaking with a mix of frustration and hurt. “I have my own life. My own job. My own apartment. I am not moving in with either of you. This is my choice, and I am not giving it up for anyone.”
Killian’s jaw tightened. “Don’t be ridiculous, Annabella. This isn’t about your pride. This is about protecting our child. The media is already a circus. If they find out you’re still living here, they'll tear you apart.”
“He’s right,” Luciano conceded, “but you don’t have to do it on his terms. My estate is private. You’d be safe there. The baby would be safe there. And you wouldn’t have to deal with his… domineering nature.”
Annabella felt the tears welling up in her eyes. The two men were so focused on their own narrative, their own claims, that they weren't even hearing her. She felt invisible, a vessel for a child she wasn’t sure she even had the right to make decisions for anymore.
“Please,” she said, her voice breaking. “Just… go. Both of you. I need to think. I need to be alone. I can’t handle this right now.”
Killian’s gaze was intense, unyielding. “I’m not leaving until you agree to come with me, Annabella.”
“Then I’ll be calling security, Mr. Astor,” Annabella retorted, her voice icy. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and put her thumb on the screen. “I have every right to feel safe in my own home, and you are currently making me feel very unsafe. Now, please leave. Both of you.”
Killian's expression was a mixture of frustration and something she couldn't quite name. Luciano looked genuinely concerned. They both knew she was serious.
Finally, Killian turned and walked away without another word. Luciano lingered for a moment. “I’m here if you need me, Annabella. Just call.” He gave her a soft, almost pleading look before following Killian down the hall.
Annabella closed the door, leaning her forehead against the cool wood. The dam broke. She slid to the floor, her body trembling with silent sobs. Claire, who had been watching the entire exchange from the living room, rushed to her side.
“Oh, Annabella, I’m so sorry,” Claire whispered, wrapping her arms around her best friend. “This is all my fault. I never should have said anything to anyone.”
Annabella shook her head, burying her face in Claire’s shoulder. “It’s not just you. It’s all of it. The lie, the men, the baby… I can’t breathe. I just want it to be normal again.”
“I know,” Claire said, stroking her back. “I know.”
Annabella cried for what felt like an eternity, the sobs wracking her body until she was exhausted. Eventually, the tears slowed and stopped, replaced by a hollow emptiness. She was too tired to be angry, too tired to be scared. She just wanted to sleep. She barely had the energy to pull herself off the floor and into bed, where she collapsed, falling into a deep, dreamless sleep.
