Chapter 22 THE END

Chapter 22 THE END
Annabella
The kitchen of the Astor estate is no longer pristine and silent. It is a warzone of sticky fingerprints, half-eaten gourmet pancakes, and the roar of four small boys. Elias, now five and a half, is the eldest and, thankfully, the only one who takes after me. He’s strategic, quiet, and reads the room.
The other three, the triplets, born two years ago, are pure, unadulterated Killian clones: loud, demanding, beautiful, and completely incapable of independent thought regarding anything outside of their current, immediate desire.
I sit at the oversized breakfast table, sipping my mandatory pregnancy smoothie—a blend Luciano personally approved for "optimal maternal iron levels", and try to read a corporate brief.
Elias slides into the chair beside me, his brow furrowed, mimicking the exact expression his father makes before he signs a multi-million-dollar deal. “Mom, why did Uncle Luciano say that the blue trucks have a higher risk of tire failure in this specific kinetic environment?”
“Because, darling, Uncle Luciano assesses the failure rate of all things, even children’s toys,” I murmur, pushing my hair back. I’m thirty-seven weeks pregnant, huge, and frankly, done with assessments.
The triplets erupt simultaneously. “Mom! Mom! Mom!”
Killian walks in, freshly showered, wearing a custom suit and looking, as always, like he owns every molecule of air in the room. His presence instantly amplifies the chaos. His eyes, my eyes, go straight to the triplets.
"Astor, you need to use your indoor voices," he commands, his voice deep and smooth, but they just look at him like he's issued a challenge.
Killian leans down, kissing me tenderly on the forehead. “How are you feeling, my love? Any fluctuations in blood pressure? Did you take your supplement?”
“I am fine, Killian, and yes, I swallowed the two vitamins and the pill I suspect is actually a tiny tracking device,” I sigh. “Elias, tell your brothers to eat their dinosaur eggs.”
Before Elias can relay the message, Luciano strides in. He’s reviewing a report on his tablet, but his eyes scan the room like a security camera.
“Annabella, I've had the chef increase the ventilation in your office. The air pressure needs to be optimal for your third trimester. And I’ve instructed the driver to keep the climate control precisely at seventy-two degrees for the entire day. No deviations.”
I groan dramatically, leaning back. “I am not an orchid, gentlemen. I am carrying a healthy girl who is currently attempting to use my ribs as a jungle gym. I’m tough. I ran a corporation through a corporate war and a bullet wound recovery.”
Killian’s demeanor shifts instantly, his eyes intense. He walks over, pulls the chair next to mine closer, and sits down, taking my hand. “The risk assessment changes when you are creating life, Matriarch. We lost you once. We are not taking chances.”
“Precisely,” Luciano agrees, putting his hand on the back of my chair, effectively boxing me in with protective millionaires. “The baby girl is our Achilles heel. We are outnumbered by the Y chromosome in this house. She must be protected at all costs. And Killian, the latest drone imagery confirms no unauthorized vehicles have passed within a five-mile radius of the North Gate in the last twenty-four hours. Harrison is still ghost.”
I watch Killian’s face tighten slightly at the mention of his stepbrother. Even years later, the threat of Harrison Grey, who remains unfound despite Killian’s resources, is the only thing that mars our perfect life.
“Good,” Killian says, his tone dark. “Keep the search wide. He’ll make a mistake. He always does. But today, the only priority is Annabella’s comfort. Are the ergonomic cushions in the boardroom prepared for the five o’clock meeting?”
“Yes, and I canceled the last two hours of the meeting. You need rest,” Luciano confirms.
I shake my head, half in exasperation, half in love. “You two are exhausting. It’s like being guarded by two highly successful, impeccably dressed border collies.”
Elias, my logical child, looks up from his plate. “Border collies are good, Mom. They herd things. They keep things safe.”
“Exactly!” Killian says, pointing at Elias. “See? The eldest gets it. Annabella, I’m only ensuring your environment is optimized for safety and minimal stress exposure.”
“You two worry me more than the corporation!” I retort. “I swear, I had to fight Luciano just to have a single cup of regular coffee last week.”
Luciano raises an eyebrow. “It was decaf, strategically mixed with oat milk for calcium, and only after I reviewed the caffeine impact studies for late-term gestation. It was a compromise.”
“A hostile compromise!” I laugh, pulling Killian’s hand to my lips. “But I wouldn’t trade it. I really wouldn't. Now, you need to go be a CEO. You have that presentation.”
“I’m canceling it,” Killian says immediately. “I can run the company from here. My presence is required at the breakfast table to monitor the triplets' sugar intake and ensure you don’t stand up too fast.”
“You are not canceling a billion-dollar presentation!” I protest. “I’m fine! Look.” I push myself up slowly, but before my feet even touch the ground, both Killian and Luciano are flanking me.
“Easy,” Killian murmurs, his large hands supporting my elbows.
“Support the lumbar,” Luciano advises, stepping behind me. “Maintain vertical alignment.”
“I’m just getting a napkin, you absolute lunatics!” I exclaim, walking three feet to the dispenser.
Killian leans in, his breath warm against my ear. “I love you. Don’t fall.”
Luciano is already calculating the distance of the trip. “Three steps, minimal risk, but the flooring here is Italian marble. Slick factor is point-seven.”
I turn back, shaking my head at the combined, ridiculous devotion of the two most powerful men in the city. "This is what my life is. Four tiny, loud boys, one strategic husband, and one over-analytical best friend."
The four boys, sensing a lull in attention, start throwing miniature breakfast sausages at each other. Killian immediately issues a military command.
“Elias! Contain the perimeter! Finn, Noah, Alexander, cease fire and retrieve the projectile weapons immediately!”
I watch my family, my beautifully chaotic, fiercely protected family. The triplets, exact copies of Killian, already trying to negotiate terms of surrender. Elias, my quiet, deep-thinking boy. And the two powerful men, completely captivated by my every movement.
“You know what the best part is?” I ask Killian, resting my hand against my belly. “She’s going to be just like Elias. A quiet, thinking, strategic girl. She’s going to rule all five of you.”
“She already does,” Killian says, kissing my knuckles. “We’ve bought three more security drones, just for her.”
“That’s an acceptable investment,” Luciano calls out from the sink, where he is now, oddly, sanitizing the sausage projectiles.
I open my mouth to argue for the sheer joy of the conflict, when a sharp, unmistakable pressure hits my abdomen. It’s a feeling I know well, but this time, it’s coupled with a heavy, warm rush between my legs.
I look down at the floor, where the beautiful Persian rug is now sporting a large, damp stain.
The chaos of the morning, the boys, the business, the worry, all stops instantly.
“Killian,” I breathe out, my eyes wide.
Killian, who was bending to lecture Finn about projectile trajectory, stands up instantly, his face draining of all color.
“The carpet,” he says, his voice a strangled gasp. “Annabella, did you spill your smoothie?”
“No, darling,” I manage, a wave of pain making me grip the edge of the table. “That’s not a smoothie. That’s… my water just broke.”
Luciano drops the spatula and the sanitized sausages clatter loudly in the metal sink. He immediately pulls out his phone. “Contractions must be logged. Annabella, what is the frequency? Killian, do not touch her! I need the first aid kit and a sterile field. Now!”
Killian stares at the wet spot on the rug, then at my face, and his calm, corporate demeanor completely shatters. He looks wildly between me and the baby crib.
“The car! Get the car! The seventy-two-degree climate control! Elias, get your brothers! We need a clean exit!” Killian roars, completely disorganized for the first time in years. “Annabella, hold still! I swear, if you move, I’ll fire the entire medical team!”
I lean back against the table, a wide, joyful smile spreading across my face. I am finally getting my girl.
“I’m going to be late for the boardroom, aren’t I?” I manage, just as the first strong contraction hits.
