Chapter 27 Chapter: 27
ADDISON
Still holding my hand, Shepherd led me to his car and hurried to where the guys were. He was saying something to them as he thrust his car key at them, but none of them would take it. I frowned as I started towards them.
“Fine, assholes. Try not to let them out of your sight. I know they'll probably be here all night.”
“Don't worry, that fucker isn't running anywhere this time around,” Asher gritted. I frowned.
Who were they talking about?
Shepherd looked far behind at something, then glanced back at his friends. He nodded at them. They nodded back as I neared them.
I tried to look back because it suddenly occurred to me that Shepherd wasn't taking me somewhere, but rather, he didn't want me to meet someone.
“Come on, didn't I tell you to wait by the car?” he asked, a bit irritated. I scoffed, feeling pissed as well.
I turned around, trying to catch a glimpse of what could have brought about this change, not that the shepherd was a ray of sunshine to begin with. But I didn't see anything in particular as he led me back to his car. I got inside as he rounded to the other side and entered. The engine roared to life, and Shepherd stepped on the pedal, taking off down the empty street.
I fidget with the hem of my dress, trying to pull it down and wondering what the hell just happened. One minute, I was smiling, celebrating Shepherd's win, while he was staring at me intently.
The next, he's looking like someone pissed in his coffee, and I'm being dragged away because of some guy they probably hated? I sneak a glance at Shepherd from the driver's seat.
His jaw was set, eyes forward, hands steady on the wheel. He drove like he did everything else, recklessly as though he couldn't care less about his life.
Although this time, he looks emotionally dark. There was no teasing smirk lighting his eyes, or his biting remark or threat.
“Where are we going?” I asked, trying to sound casual, despite my nerves.
There was no answer. My stomach flipped. “Shepherd, what the hell just happened?”
“Nothing. I'm taking you back to school. I'll talk to the security to sneak you in. No one would know you weren't at school the entire time.” I frowned at him.
“And you? Where are you going? Aren't you going back to school with me? What about the others?”
“We have something to do. We'll head back, the guys and me, when we're done.”
Tires screeched behind us as we took a sharp turn. Shepherd's head flicked to his rearview mirror, his face hardened, and his eyes turned even darker.
“Addison, put on your damn seat belt,” he snapped, in a tone of voice I had never heard directed at me before.
The urgency in his hard voice was what got to me. My stomach dropped when I noticed a couple of headlights in the distance, right behind us.
Shit!
“Who are they? Are they chasing us?” I asked, my pulse hammering as Shepherd increased his speed, racing down the road like he had another life hidden somewhere.
Tires screeched behind us, a car pulled up on my side, and my eyes widened when I saw the two guys seated in the front. Dark, tatted, and obviously not a fan of the boy beside me.
The one closest to me whistled loudly. “Got yourself a new chick, I see,” the blonde yelled, chewing his gum in a lazy kind of way. “Hey, beautiful, wanna hang out with us? I promise we're more fun than zero.”
I frowned at the strange name he’d just called shepherd.
“The boss has been looking for you, Zero,” the blonde yelled, now looking at Shepherd.
Boss? Who the hell is this boss?
“Get fucking lost, Key, I have nothing to say to you,’ Shepherd yelled back. “If your boss wants to see me, he can get his ass over here or fucking wait for me at the track.”
“Or we can take you to him. I’m sure he’d like to meet your little girlfriend.” Shepherd chuckled.
“You can certainly try,” the blonde saluted, grinning.
“Shrimp,” Shepherd gritted, I turned to him. “Seatbelt now!” I quickly put on my seatbelt when Shepherd flipped the guys the bird, then he stepped on the brakes.
My stomach cramps badly when the other one does. The driver who had been exchanging death glares with Shepherd, final glances at me, eyes dark as night.
He glances at Shepherd and smirks as he steps on his pedal, trying to overtake us. Shepherd stepped on the accelerator, his McLaren shot hard on the asphalt, not giving an inch to these strangers.
“Shepherd?” I felt my stomach shrivel as they began to race on the narrow road, trying to overtake each other.
“Hold on tight,” he growled. I did, I held on for dear life as the cars swerved, taking sharp turns and racing down the road.
I don’t know how long we raced down that narrowed highway road before Shepherd finally hit the brake and twisted off the engine. I panted sitting there in the passenger seat, wondering what the fuck was that about.
I yanked the door open and stumbled out, feeling like the entire world is turning, my knees feel weak as jelly and I'm feeling nauseated.
Shepherd stepped out of the car looking totally unruffled by the event of the past one hour. I’m happy we finally lost the…
The words got stuck in my throat as the familiar car that had been following us, with another black SUV, and two bikes headed towards us.
‘Get inside the car, Addison, and lock the door,” the shepherd ordered, staring at the approaching vehicles.
“No, I’m not doing that until you tell me what the hell is going on,” I said, needing answers. I hadn’t asked questions earlier because I was too busy holding onto dear life and praying that today wasn’t going to be my last day.
But now that we're no longer running, I don’t think I can take another second of this mystery. I need to know what is going on, like yesterday.
Shepherd,” I screeched, as he picked me up unceremoniously and dumped me inside the car. “I’m fucking serious, Addie, stay the fuck here.”
Before I could protest, he slammed the door shut just as the bike stopped right in front of him.
You could hear a pin drop at the sudden tension in the air.
