Chapter 54: Wolfsbane

Adam stood at the border, the air heavy with tension as he surveyed the scene before him. A group of fighters surrounded him, their expressions grim as they pointed towards the debris scattered on the ground just inside the border. “What do you make of this, Adam?”, one of the guards asked, his voice laced with concern as he gestured towards the wreckage.

Adam’s brows furrowed in thought as he examined the wreckage, his mind racing with possibilities. “Looks like a drone to me.”, he replied, his voice low with uncertainty. “But I’ve never seen anything like it before.”

The guards exchanged worried glances, their eyes flickering with unease as they took in the sight before them. “Should we search for more?”, another guard asked, his voice tinged with urgency.

Adam nodded in agreement, his instincts urging him to investigate further. “Yes, spread out and see if you can find anything else.”, he ordered, his voice firm with determination. “I’ll take a closer look at this.”

As the guards scattered to search for more, Adam knelt down beside the wreckage, his heart pounding with anticipation. He carefully examined the drone, his fingers tracing the intricate patterns etched into its surface. The drone was unlike anything Adam had ever seen before, its design sleek and futuristic. He couldn’t shake the feeling that there was something off about it, something that didn’t quite add up.

In the apartment, Lucas sat by Enora’s side, his heart heavy with worry as he watched over her unconscious form. Grace sat beside him, her expression filled with concern as she offered what little comfort she could. “Grace, I need you to go outside and guide the doctor in when he arrives.”, Lucas said, his voice tinged with urgency. “We need to get Enora the help she needs as soon as possible.”

Grace nodded in understanding; her eyes filled with determination as she rose to her feet. “I’ll make sure he gets here.”, she replied, her voice steady with resolve. As Grace hurried outside to wait for the doctor, Lucas turned his attention back to Enora, his heart aching with worry. He gently brushed a strand of hair away from her face, his fingers trembling with fear as he whispered words of reassurance.

Minutes felt like hours as they waited for the doctor to arrive, each passing moment filled with mounting tension and uncertainty. But finally, the sound of footsteps echoed through the hallway, and Grace returned with the doctor in tow. The doctor’s expression was grave as he surveyed Enora’s injuries, his eyes filled with concern as he knelt down beside her. “It looks like she’s been exposed to deluded wolfsbane.”, he said, his voice somber. “It’s potent toxin for us, but thankfully, the burns are light.”

Together, they carefully lifted Enora onto the bed, the doctor attending to her superficial head wound and the burns on her skin. Lucas watched with bated breath, his heart pounding with fear as he waited for the news of her condition.

“The burns should heal in time.”, the doctor reassured them, his voice calm and steady. “And it’s likely she has a mild concussion from hitting her head on the tiled floor. But all in all, she should make a full recovery.”

Relief washed over Lucas as he listened to the doctor’s words, his heart soaring with gratitude. “Thank you, doctor.”, he said, his voice choked with emotion. Lucas felt horrible, looking at his mate on the bed.

However, the doctor’s next words sent a chill down his spine, reminding him of the gravity of their situation. “I know it doesn’t seem like it, but you’ve been very lucky. If she had drunk the water.”, the doctor said, his voice grave. “She would have died.”

Sebastian’s mind raced as he and Tony scrutinized the footage that had alarmed Tony. The images flickered across the screen, blurry and distorted, but Sebastian could only make out the faint outlines of strange shapes hovering in the sky. “I’ve never seen anything like it.”, Tony said, his voice tinged with concern as he leaned closer to the screen. “I thought you might have some insight into what these things are.”

Sebastian frowned in concentration as he studied the footage, his brow furrowed in frustration. “It’s hard to tell.”, he replied, his voice filled with uncertainty. “But it looks like… drones.”

Tony’s eyes widened with surprise at Sebastian’s words, his expression filled with disbelief. “Drones?”, he echoed, his voice tinged with disbelief. “But what would drones be doing out here?”

Sebastian shrugged, his mind racing with possibilities. “I’m not sure.”, he admitted, his tone thoughtful. “But whatever they are, they don’t belong here. We need to figure out what they’re up to.”

Annoyed that he couldn’t decipher the footage, Sebastian decided to return home, his mind buzzing with questions and concerns. As he made his way back to the mansion, his thoughts drifted to Enora and Lucas. The day had started so good, a perfect Sunday morning filled with passion and intimacy. But now, everything had gone wrong, and Sebastian couldn’t shake the feeling of unease that settled over him like a dark cloud.

“Lucas.”, Grace asked kindly and softly, while she put her hand on his arm. “There is still the sample to be tested.”, she reminded him. Lucas sighed and nodded. He had pushed that to the back of his mind, because he needed to make sure that his mate was well. But Grace was right, he still needed to do that.

Reluctant to leave Enora behind, Lucas walked down to the office space, knowing that Grace would take care of her. The office space felt eerily quiet as Lucas stepped inside, his footsteps echoing in the empty room. He glanced around, his eyes searching for any sign of the temporary lab setup that Adam had made. The setup looked like a mystery to him.

Lucas furrowed his brows in frustration, how on earth was he going to manage this? He knew he needed to focus on the task at hand, to determine whether the water supply had been contaminated with wolfsbane. But his thoughts kept drifting back to Enora, to the sight of her lying unconscious on the bed, her skin burned, and her head injured.

As he pondered his next move, a tired Adam stumbled into the office, his expression drawn with exhaustion. “Lucas, what are you doing here?”, Adam asked, his voice tinged with surprise as he looked up and saw Lucas standing there. Lucas sighed in relief at the sight of Adam and gave him the biggest hug. “I need your help, Adam.”, he said, his voice heavy with worry. “I need to test this sample to see if it’s been contaminated with wolfsbane.”

Adam was in shock, but he didn’t ask any questions now. That time would come later. “Of course.”, he said, his voice tinged with concern. “Let’s get started.”

Together, they set to work. Lucas’ hands trembled with anticipation as he carefully filled the vial with a sample of the water, his heart pounding with fear as he awaited the results. Minutes felt like hours as they waited for the test to run its course, each passing moment filled with mounting tension and uncertainty. But finally, the machine beeped, signaling that the test was complete.

Lucas’ heart raced as he approached the machine, his eyes scanning the display for any sign of contamination. But to his surprise, the results came back negative, showing that the water was plain and uncontaminated. Confusion washed over Lucas as he stared at the screen, his mind racing with questions. If the water wasn’t contaminated with wolfsbane, then what had caused Enora’s injuries? And was dropped in the water supply?

Lucas frowned in concern as he studied the results, his brow furrowed in thought. “This doesn’t make any sense.”, he said, his voice tinged with frustration.

On their way up to the apartment, Lucas filled Adam in on what had happened. Lucas’ words made Adam anxious. If he had known that Enora was in trouble…

Grace looked up as they entered, her eyes filled with concern as she awaited their return. “What did you find out?”, she asked, her voice soft with concern.

Lucas sighed and shook his head, his heart heavy with frustration. “The water wasn’t contaminated. At least the water from the supply basin wasn’t.”, he said. “We still don’t know what cause Enora’s injuries.”

Grace’s brow furrowed in confusion as she processed Lucas’ words, her mind racing with questions. “But if the supply basin wasn’t contaminated, then how could it have caused the burns on Enora?”

Lucas shrugged in frustration, his mind filled with uncertainty. “I don’t know.”, he admitted, his voice heavy with frustration. “But we need to find out before it’s too late.”

Grace nodded in agreement, her expression grave as she listened to Lucas’ words. “We’ll figure it out.”, she said, her voice tinged with determination. “But for now, we need to focus on getting Enora the help she needs.”

With a final nod of agreement, they left Enora’s room, leaving her to rest as they pondered their next move. Grace assured them that she would inform the pack that the water supply was safe, while Lucas and Adam discussed their next course of action.

Later that evening, Sebastian returned to the mansion, his heart heavy with worry as he listened to Adam and Lucas recount what had happened. His brow furrowed in frustration as he listened to their story, his mind racing.

“We should have been there.”, Adam said, his voice filled with frustration and anger. “We should have protected her.”

Sebastian nodded in agreement, his expression grim. “I know.”, he said, his voice heavy with guilt. “But we’ll make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

Together, they sat in silence, their minds filled with worry for their mate. The day had started so good, a perfect Sunday morning filled with passion and intimacy.
