Chapter 53: Anxious Pursuit
Grace’s heart skipped a beat as her phone rang, interrupting her morning coffee. She glanced at the caller ID and saw Enora’s name flashing on the screen. With a sense of urgency, she answered the call. “Enora, darling, how can I help you?”
But instead of Enora’s voice, there was only silence on the other end of the line. Grace furrowed her brows in concern. “Enora, are you there? Is something wrong?”
Still, there was no response. Grace was worried, prank calling was unlike Enora, so that could be ruled out. Maybe she called her without knowing? But worry had taken hold of Grace already, so after she disconnected the call, she attempted to call Enora back. It rang, but eventually went to voicemail.
Fearing the worst, Grace decided to call Sebastian next. She dialed his number, her heart pounding with apprehension as she waited for him to pick up. But to her dismay, the call went unanswered, and she was redirected to his voicemail. Growing increasingly anxious, Grace tried Adam’s number next, hoping for a response. But once again, her call went unanswered, leaving her feeling more unsettled than ever. Desperation clawed at Grace’s chest as she dialed Lucas’ number, her fingers trembling with fear as she awaited his response. But also this call went to voicemail, which left Grace feeling more helpless than ever.
With a sinking feeling in the pit of her stomach, Grace realized that none of them were answering their phones. Panic threatened to take hold of her as she tried to make sense of the situation. She paced back and forth, her mind racing with a thousand thoughts and possibilities. Should she call the police? Should she try to reach out to their friends and family? Or should she go to the mansion herself to see if Enora was there and what she was calling about?
After agonizing over her options for what felt like an eternity, Grace made a decision. She couldn’t sit idly by while her friends were in trouble. With a sense of determination, she grabbed her coat and keys and hurried out the door. Walking to the mansion felt like an eternity, each passing second filled with mounting dread and apprehension. Grace’s mind raced with a thousand fears and uncertainties as she navigated the familiar streets, her heart pounding in her chest.
When she arrived at the mansion, she hurried up the steps, her breath coming in shallow gasps as she reached for the doorbell. She pressed the button impatiently, the sound echoing through the empty hallway as she waited for someone to answer. But there was no response. Panic surged through Grace as she pounded on the door, calling out to Enora and the others. But her cries fell on deaf ears, and there was no sign of life inside the mansion.
With a sinking feeling in her chest, Grace tried the door handle, half expecting it to be locked. To her surprise, the door swung open easily, revealing the dimly lit interior of the mansion. Heart pounding in her chest, Grace stepped inside, her senses on high alert as she surveyed her surroundings. “Enora? Sebastian? Adam? Lucas?”, Grace called out, her voice echoing through the empty halls. But there was no response, and the silence only served to deepen her unease.
With each passing moment, Grace’s fear grew more palpable, until it felt like a suffocating weight pressing down on her chest. She couldn’t shake the feeling that something was terribly wrong, and she was running out of time to find out what it was. Grace continued to search the mansion, going up to the office space. Her footsteps echoed through the empty halls as she ventured deeper. She called out for her friends, hoping against hope that they would answer, but there was only silence in response.
As Grace reached the office space, her heart sank further. The familiar surroundings felt foreign and hauntingly quiet. She glanced around the room, her eyes scanning the desks and chairs for any sign of her friends, but the space remained eerily empty.
Lucas was watching the footage alongside Mia, and his heart sank at the sight of the drone dropping an unknown substance into the water basin. The gravity of the situation weight heavily on him as he realized the potential threat to their community. “Mia, this is serious.”, Lucas said, his voice tinged with urgency. “We need to act quickly to assess the extent of the contamination and warn the authorities.”
Mia nodded, her expression grave as she processed the implications of what they just witnessed. “I’ll get the word around to stop using the water immediately.”, she said, determination flashing in her eyes. “We can’t afford to take any chances.”
Lucas hurried to the water supply, his heart pounding with fear and uncertainty. As they approached the area, a wave of apprehension washed over them, and Lucas felt a knot form in the pit of his stomach. The water basin appeared eerily still, the surface reflecting the dim light of the surrounding area. Lucas could sense the presence of danger lingering in the air, and he knew they were facing a formidable adversary.
“I need to get a sample of the water.”, he muttered to himself. “We have to find out what’s in it and how it got there.”
Lucas filled the vial with a sample of the water, his movements precise and deliberate as he worked. A sense of dread settled over him, he knew they were facing a race against time to uncover the truth and neutralize the threat before it was too late. He closed the vial and ran to their offices, knowing that Adam had a test set-up in there.
As Lucas rushed to the office space with the sample clutched tightly in his hand, his mind raced with all the possibilities, one worse than the next. The urgency of the situation weighed heavily on him as he realized the potential consequences.
Meanwhile, Grace’s panic reached new heights as she continued to search the mansion for any sign of its inhabitants. With each passing moment, her fear grew more palpable, until it felt like a suffocating weight pressing down on her chest. “Enora? Sebastian? Adam? Lucas?”, Grace called out, her voice echoing through the empty halls as she frantically searched every room and corridor. But there was no response, and the silence only served to deepen her unease.
Just as Grace’s despair threatened to overpower her, she heard the sound of footsteps echoing through the hallway. With a surge of hope, she hurried towards the source of the noise, her heart pounding in her chest. As she turned the corner, she came face to face with Lucas, his expression filled with worry and concern. Relief flooded through Grace at the sight of him, and she couldn’t help but throw her arms around him in a tight embrace.
“Grace? What are you doing here?”, Lucas asked surprised. Grace was the last person he expected to see in the mansion, but maybe she also found out about the water being off.
“Enora!”, she breathed. All the running and searching had left Grace out of breath, so she clutched at Lucas and she wanted to tell him what she knew, but couldn’t.
“Enora is fine, I’m sure. She is probably sleeping.”, Lucas grinned, the memories of the morning flooding back in his mind for a second. “I just need to get this sample tested quickly.”, he said, gently picking Grace up and getting her out of this way.
“No, Enora! She called, but there was no one on the line. Something happened!”, Grace panicked, scared that Lucas didn’t feel how urgent the situation was.
“Why do you say that?”, Lucas asked, wondering why Grace was so scared.
“I heard water running, and no one talking. I called her back, no one answered.”, Grace told him. “We need to go find her.”, Grace kept pressing Lucas.
Finally, he gave in and placed the sample on Adam’s desk, as they made their way up to the top floor apartment quickly.
“Enora, are you in here?”, Grace called out, her voice trembling in anxiety as they walked through the apartment. “It’s Grace and Lucas.”
There was no response, and Grace’s heart sank as she exchanged a worried glance with Lucas. With a sense of trepidation, Lucas reached for the doorknob of the bedroom, and pushed the door open. As they stepped inside, a wave of unease washed over them, and Grace’s stomach churned with fear. The air was heavy with tension, and the silence of the apartment felt suffocating.
“Enora?”, Lucas called out, his voice tinged with concern as he scanned the room.
A faint moan echoed from the bathroom, sending a chill down Grace’s spine. Without hesitation, Lucas and Grace rushed towards the source of the sound, their hearts pounding with dread. As they pushed open the bathroom door, a scene of horror greeted them. Enora lay on the floor, her skin burned and blistered, blood seeping from a wound on her head. Grace gasped in shock, her hands flying to her mouth as she took in the sight before her.
“Oh my Goddess, Enora, what happened?”, Grace exclaimed, her voice trembling with fear as she knelt down beside her friend. “Can you hear me?”
Enora’s eyes fluttered open, her gaze unfocused as she struggled to speak. “It hurts…”, she whispered, her voice barely above a whisper, and her eyes closing again.
Lucas’ heart clenched with fear at the sight of Enora’s injuries, his mind racing with a thousand worries. Without hesitation, he reached for his phone and dialed Sebastian’s number, his fingers trembling with anxiety as he waited for a response. But to his dismay, the call went unanswered, and Lucas felt a surge of panic rising in his chest. He tried again and again, each attempt met with the same result, until finally, Sebastian picked up, his voice tinged with annoyance.
“Lucas, what is it?”, Sebastian’s voice crackled through the phone, his tone impatient. “I told you not to disturb me unless it’s an emergency.”
Lucas struggled to find his words, his panic threatening to overwhelm him as he tried to explain the gravity of the situation. “Sebastian, it’s Enora.”, he blurted out, his voice trembling with fear. “She’s hurt… badly. We need help.”
Sebastian’s annoyance melted away in an instant, replaced by concern as he realized it was indeed an emergency. “Where are you?”, he demanded, his voice urgent. “I’ll send for a doctor right away.”
Lucas breathed a sigh of relief at Sebastian’s response, his heart pounding with gratitude. “We’re in the apartment.”, he replied quickly. “Hurry, Sebastian.”
As he ended the call, Lucas felt a wave of relief wash over him, knowing that help was on the way. But the sight of Enora’s injuries still filled him with dread, and he couldn’t shake the feeling of helplessness that gnawed at him.
