The Final Battle
Akira stood in the middle of the ritual site, golden light swirling around her like a protective shield. The broken obsidian pillar lay in pieces at her feet, each shard sparkling with inner light. She had driven the Leviathan away, but she knew it would return.
The mountain shook beneath her. Storm clouds gathered overhead, darker than before, moving with unnatural speed.
"Come back and face me," Akira called out, her voice carrying on the wind. "No more hiding. No more games."
Thunder cracked in return. The air grew heavy with the smell of rain and something else—something ancient and angry.
Through her golden ties, Akira felt her alphas moving toward her. Despite their tiredness, despite their lack of power, they were coming to stand with her. Tears pricked her eyes at their dedication, but she quickly blinked them away. She couldn't afford weakness now.
"Your alphas rush to their doom," the Leviathan's voice rumbled from the sky. "How sweet. How foolish."
The storm clouds descended, touching the ground around the ritual spot. They solidified into the massive form of the Leviathan, even bigger than before. Its scales rippled with darkness, and its eyes burned with hate.
"You rejected my offer," it snarled. "Now you will watch everything you love burn."
Akira's hands curled into fists. "I'm not afraid of you."
"You should be," the thing hissed.
It struck without notice, a wave of darkness crashing toward her. Akira threw up her hands, golden light bursting from her palms. The two forces met with a sound like thunder.
The contact knocked Akira backward, but she managed to stay on her feet. The golden shield around her flickered but held.
"Impressive," the Leviathan admitted. "The power of five alphas makes you strong. But I have consumed hundreds over the ages."
It attacked again, this time from various directions. Darkness crashed against Akira's shield like ocean waves against a cliff. Each hit sent pain shooting through her body, but she refused to fall.
"You can't win," the Leviathan mocked. "Your power has limits. Mine does not."
Akira gritted her teeth, looking for a weakness in the massive creature. The ritual site hummed beneath her feet, reacting to her presence. The ancient stones glowed brighter wherever her golden light touched them.
An idea sparked in her mind.
Akira knelt and pressed her palm to the ground. Golden energy flowed from her hand into the earth, following the lines carved into the stone. The entire circle lit up, forming a web of light that stretched across the ritual site.
The Leviathan hissed in pain as the light touched its form. It recoiled, coiling tighter around the outer edge of the circle.
"The ritual site," Akira realized aloud. "It was built to contain you."
"Built by fools who thought they could control me," the thing spat. "They failed. As will you."
It rushed forward again, darkness flowing like water. But this time, Akira was ready. She poured her power into the ritual circle, making the stones blaze with golden fire.
The Leviathan screamed as the light cut through its darkness. Parts of its huge body began to dissolve, turning to smoke.
Hope flared in Akira's chest. She could win this.
The creature seemed to sense her thoughts. Its eyes narrowed, and something like a smile twisted its hideous face.
"You think you're winning," it said, voice dripping with cruel glee. "How naive."
The Leviathan's form shifted, becoming more solid at its heart. The darkness pulled inward, gathering into a dense core. From this core, tendrils of shadow shot outward, hitting the ground at five specific points around the circle.
Each tendril sank into the earth, and the ground began to glow with sickly blue light.
Akira felt a sudden pull on her golden bonds—the links that linked her to her alphas. Pain lanced through her chest as the bonds stretched thin.
"What are you doing?" she gasped.
"Using your own weapon against you," the Leviathan responded. "Those ties you cherish? They work both ways."
The blue light pulsed, and Akira felt the ties vibrate like plucked strings. In the distance, she heard wolves roaring in pain.
"No!" she cried, understanding coming on her. "Leave them alone!"
"Too late," the Leviathan said quietly. "They gave their power to you. Now I take it from them both."
Akira tried to sever the links, to protect her alphas, but the bonds were too deeply ingrained. She could feel them weakening as the Leviathan's magic traveled along the paths, draining what little power the alphas had left.
Desperate, she poured more of her power into the sacred circle. The stones reacted, golden light racing along the ancient patterns.
The Leviathan roared in anger as its tendrils were cut off. But the damage was done. Akira felt the alphas' pain echoing through the links.
"You can't protect them and fight me at the same time," the creature taunted. "Choose, little vessel. Them or win."
Anger rushed through Akira, hot and fierce. The golden light around her flared brighter than ever, responding to her feelings.
"I choose both," she snarled.
She gathered her power, drawing on every ounce of strength the alphas had given her. The golden light condensed around her hands, making twin spheres of pure energy.
The Leviathan launched another strike, darkness crashing toward her from all sides. Akira waited until the last moment, then released her power.
Golden light burst outward, meeting the darkness head-on. The two forces met with such force that the mountain itself shook. Rocks fell down the slopes, trees uprooted, and the sky split with lightning.
For a moment, the two forces seemed evenly matched. Then, slowly, the golden light began to push back the darkness.
The Leviathan thrashed in pain as its form started to dissolve. Wherever the light touched, its darkness turned to smoke. Its massive body shrank, moving toward the center of the ritual site.
Akira pressed her edge, pouring more power into her attack. The golden light pushed forward, consuming more of the creature's darkness.
"Yes!" she cried, feeling success within reach.
But the Leviathan wasn't finished. As its body continued to shrink, a strange glow appeared at its center—not the sickly blue of before, but a familiar golden color.
"Do you see it now?" the creature asked, its voice suddenly calm despite its apparent loss. "Do you understand?"
Akira faltered, confusion breaking her focus. The golden light at the Leviathan's core pulsed in a beat she recognized—the same rhythm as her own power.
"What is that?" she asked.
The Leviathan's form hardened slightly, its eyes fixing on hers. "The truth you've been too blind to see. The reason your power affects me so strongly."
Akira's attack lessened as doubt crept into her mind. The golden glow at the creature's core grew brighter, taking on a shape—a human shape.
"No," Akira whispered, fear dawning on her face.
"Yes," the Leviathan said, satisfaction in its voice. "Before there were five regions, before there were alphas and packs, there was only one Luna. The first Luna."
The golden figure within the Leviathan's darkness became clearer—a woman, stuck in time, her face peaceful despite her imprisonment.
"She gave herself to me willingly," the creature continued. "To save those she loved. Just as your alphas gave themselves to you."
Akira's power weakened further, her golden light dimming as shock rippled through her.
"You're lying," she said, but doubt crept into her voice.
"Am I?" the Leviathan asked. "Search the bonds, little vessel. Feel the truth."
Against her better sense, Akira reached out through the golden threads, seeking confirmation or denial. What she found made her blood run cold.
There, at the very heart of her power, was a link she hadn't noticed before—ancient and faded, but unmistakably similar to her bonds with the alphas.
"She's part of me now," the Leviathan said softly. "As are all who came after her. As you will be."
Akira stumbled backward, her attack failing completely. The golden light withdrew, swirling around her in confused patterns.
The Leviathan's form began to grow again, darkness flowing back to fill the places the light had claimed.
"Now you understand," it said, satisfaction in its voice. "You cannot destroy me without destroying her—and all the others I've collected through the ages. Your special bonds make it impossible."
Akira stood frozen, her mind running. Was this the truth? Or another trick?
In the distance, she heard her alphas' howls getting closer. They were coming, helpless but determined, to stand with her against impossible odds.
The Leviathan's eyes gleamed with dark laughter. "Choose, little vessel. Destroy me and your predecessors with me, or join them inside me. Those are your only choices."
Akira's shoulders sagged as the weight of this news crushed down on her. But deep inside, a spark of rebellion refused to die.
"No," she said quietly. "There's always another way."
The Leviathan laughed, the sound shaking the mountain. "There isn't. But I'll enjoy watching you try to find one."
