Chapter 42
Chapter 42
The sun had barely risen, golden light spilling over the forest canopy as Clara followed Rowan and Lila to the training grounds. The morning air was crisp, carrying the scent of pine and damp earth. Clara’s muscles ached from yesterday’s mission, but she felt a thrill of anticipation.
“Today, we push your instincts further,” Rowan said, voice low, commanding, with that subtle edge of desire that made her pulse quicken. “You’ll move with the pack, react to threats, and learn to trust both yourself and them.”
Clara nodded, swallowing the lump in her throat. “I’m ready.”
Rowan’s eyes flicked to hers, hazel darkened with intensity. “You will be ready,” he murmured, brushing a strand of hair from her face. The contact sent an unexpected shiver through her, and she quickly blinked, forcing focus.
The training began. Clara moved with the pack, keeping pace, dodging, reacting, and learning to anticipate. Rowan stayed close, guiding her subtly, his presence like an invisible tether. Every time she stumbled, his hand brushed hers, steadying, grounding, the intensity in his gaze igniting something deeper within her.
“You’re improving,” Rowan said, voice low, almost a growl. “Faster, sharper. Stronger than I expected.”
Clara’s chest heated. “Thanks… I couldn’t do it without your guidance.”
“Don’t mistake guidance for dependency,” he murmured, stepping closer as they paused. His body pressed lightly against hers, the heat undeniable. “I want you to trust your instincts… but I also want you near me. Always.”
Her pulse raced. “I… I do trust you,” she whispered, voice trembling. “And I want to be near you.”
Rowan’s lips brushed her temple, his breath warm. “Good,” he murmured. “Because every time you move, every time you trust yourself… you become more… irresistible to me.”
Clara swallowed, a thrill running through her. Her hands lifted to rest on his chest, feeling the taut muscles, the controlled power coiled beneath his skin. The romantic tension, simmering for days, surged in a wave she could no longer ignore.
“Keep your focus,” Rowan growled softly, stepping back just enough to regain composure, though his gaze lingered on her. “Threats don’t wait, and neither will I… but we finish this training first.”
They resumed, Clara moving with new awareness, instincts sharpening. Every brush of his hand, every moment their eyes met, added fuel to the tension between them. By the time the sun climbed higher, she felt stronger, more confident, and more acutely aware of the magnetic pull Rowan held over her.
As the session ended, Rowan approached, fingers brushing her jaw, thumb lingering. “You did well,” he murmured. “And don’t think I didn’t notice how you handled yourself… and me.”
Clara’s cheeks flamed. “Handled you?” she asked, voice breathless.
“Don’t play innocent,” he said, eyes dark, a low growl in his throat. “The way you move, the way you look at me… I can’t get enough. You’re driving me insane, Clara.”
She laughed softly, breathless, heart racing. “Maybe I like that,” she whispered, leaning closer.
Rowan’s lips found hers in a long, heated kiss, full of tension, desire, and the promise of more. Every instinct in her body responded—need, trust, and longing blending into one. When they finally broke apart, Rowan rested his forehead against hers, breaths mingling.
“You’re mine,” he murmured, voice husky. “Mine in every way that matters.”
Clara smiled, breathless, chest heaving. “And I’m yours,” she replied, certainty and longing in her voice.
The forest around them was quiet, the pack watching from a distance, oblivious to the intensity of the moment. But for Clara and Rowan, every touch, every glance, every breath was electric—a promise of more danger, more passion, and a bond that was growing stronger by the day.
