Thane's POV
"You speak of the incredible," Lord Cassius says, and his timeless face holds concern that is more than mere worry. The ven vampire lord has seen empires rise and fall, magic spun gold and lost, all across history, but even his immortal mind struggles to understand what we're suggesting. Unity magic has never been tried on all the realities at once. The mental stress alone would shred most supernatural entities, leaving them a gibbering wreck of insanity or simply burning out their minds."
“Most but not all,” I say, and my green eyes stay locked on Astella and the way she shapes into something from beyond as she shimmies with a quiet firepower from the depth of her being. Our mate bond hums with energy so ancient, I’d swear it predates even time, ties us to forces beyond the first sparks of the first stars to the void of open space. I can sense her confidence through our link, yes, but her fear, her doubt, her desperate hope that we might be able to do what others could not. “She’s not just any freaky creature. She’s the final shaman, and she has an attachment to something much bigger than any of us realized.”
The the twins lean over her, theirs shapes more physical now as the world steadies itself around Astella's burgeoning strength. Their bodies are ethereal, pulsing with light that hurts to gaze upon, as though they were burning with the pure fire of possibility. “The Alpha King is honest," the woman twin says, her voice carrying harmonics that almost sound as if they are from all around at once. “Your mate has the genetic memory of every shaman who has ever existed in every reality. She’s the living bridge between what has been, what is and what might be.”
“The cost, however,” High Priestess Morgana shivers slightly, now sweating through her leathery old noggin despite the otherworldly chill pulsating through this air around us. Her tired eyes are full of untold eons of magical wisdom, and the concern there makes my blood run cold. “To channel that much power, to tether to every reality at once — it could burn her out altogether. Because we could lose her forever, and worse, we could lose ourselves in the process.
“We might,” I admit, my voice clear even as the panic scrabbles at my chest as if it were something alive lifted up by claws of razor sharp nails. My Alpha wants to protect my mate, to find an alternate way, to shoulder the burden. But the King in me recognizes that some of the most difficult decisions must be made. "But we have nothing if we don’t work for it. All that supernatural, yourself included, every reality, every chance of free will in any way, shape or form throughout the infinite spread of the multiverse.”
Astella’s own brown eyes catch mine and I sense her resolve hardening, steel being forged in the fires of determination. Her flesh becomes a radiant, luminous white, force pulsating and coursing beneath the surface like molten silver through her veins. "Thane's right. This is no longer just about saving our world. It’s about rescuing the concept of choice, the most basic right of every sentient creature to determine their own future.”
"The Architects have mades their fatal mistake," the female twin pronounces, her words full of portent that makes the hair on the back of everyone magical's neck stand on end. Her shape steadies more, firming as the reality of her words provides her with grounding in our reality. Their final aim is – Life without volition. But in the process, they have offered us the encouragement to try what has been dismissed as impossible.”
“Say,” Queen Titania commands, her divinity dimming behind the care-ridden worrylines etched across her unendingly face. The fae queen’s voice has the strength of someone used to controlling, and the desperation someone who’s realm is all at once nothing and being destroyed by forces they can't understand. "What exactly are you proposing? How do you combat creatures who live in every dimension at once?”
"It's a unity magic circle that extends over more than just our world hunt, but to every world in which supernaturals exist," his male twin explains, the image of him fluctuating in and out of a variety of different dimensions. “Astella will be our core, our point in which all our energies will meet and radiate out from, but she will not be holding it alone. We will all serve through her the various capacities, gifts or dispositions that are ours, so building up into a network of selected cooperation transcending all dimensions."
“Logistically speaking–” Lord Valerian begins, his knowledge of hundreds of centuries combating to chew on the implications. The thin paper of the pages crackles as his scalpel blade cuts through layers of patterns, and his pallid face creases in intense concentration as he calculates the magical mathematics of the work. Then he stops, and comprehension creeps into his aged face like the dawn breaking after the longest of nights. "Unless... unless we’re not trying to master all the realities at once. We're trying to teach them."
Yup, that's it," I say, a plan solidifying in my head with the kind of clarity that only comes from being certain. The strategy lays out before me, a map of battle as if sketched by the gods, everything lining up perfectly in just the right places. “We do not extract the unity onto other realities. We don’t become the thing we’re fighting. Rather, we present it as an illustration. Let every supernatural entity throughout all dimensions see what can happen when we choose to come together as opposed to being ordered to bend over and comply.”
Yvonne advances, her youthful face alight with excitement and I am reminded of how much of a child she still is, before duty and fate made her old beyond her years. After everything that’s happened to us, she still has that hope inside her, that thing that makes her think anything can be done. "It's like planting seeds! Every reality that takes our example of how to be can cultivate their own spin on a natural unity, yield some beautiful and original offshoot growing in their particular light.”
“And the more realities enjoy it enthusiastically, the tighter the network becomes,” Astella continues, her alabaster epidermis suddenly glowing with a gentle hue that pulses in time with her heartbeat. Power pours in and out of her like tangible aura, linking her to powers I can hardly fathom. In the end power from all of choosing realities will be more than that which can be forced by the Architects. They’ll realize that cooperation by choice is exponentially more powerful than conformity by threat.”
“They’re figuring out what we are trying,” he snarls, corrupted clone-born body straining against the abyss of the collective like a man drowning in an ocean of same-ness. His ancient eyes smolder with defiance, with a will to not let them win, not let them take away who he is, no matter what they’ve tried to do to him in order to de-individualize him. “They are going to attempt to prevent us from doing the network before we do it.”
“Let them,” I growl, aware of my Alpha King will igniting in a supernova of raw power. Every werewolf who has ever accepted my authority: Their strength runs through me, nourished by the same ties that bind us together through distances so vast. "They've been demanding obedience to fear and domination and compliance — they've forgotten how to fight genuine cooperation. They don’t get that when creatures merge, when they bond through consent not force, they become more than the sum of all their parts.
“It’s functioning,” Elder Raven murmurs in awe, her worn face a visage of amazement. The old witch's eyes glisten with tears at something she never would have believed possible in her centuries of life. “They want to be here, none are being forced here. Just the model of our cooperation is inspiring them to come up with their own forms of unity.”
“The network is multiplying exponentially,” High Priestess Morgana says, her magical feelers detecting the growing connections like some kind of cosmic radar system. "Every new reality joining becomes easier to connect for the others. It’s affecting everything, creating a cascade across all dimensions, faster than we ever thought possible.”
But the stronger we grow, the more desperate the Architects become. The entities also begin to coalesce into something so immense and otherworldly that reality warps around its appearance like space time deforming around a black hole. The idea of The Self That Is An Individual even begins to blur by the time the cosmic horror enacts its last move.
“They’re trying to fold all of reality into one dimension,” warn the twins together, their voices harmonizing in near-descending harmony to a chord of pure terror. If they get one, that will mean one thing – theirs. The rest will be absorbed into their mandated hive, every original idea, every indivual dream, every glint of creativity sucked down and digested.
"How long do we have?" I cry, feeling the fabric of reality slowly but surely begin to unravel about us, like fabric torn by invisible hands. Even the air seems to be coming apart as the void between the worlds peeks through.
"Minutes at the most," the woman's twin says, her shape flickering as the walls of dimension grow more translucent. “After the collapse begins, it will be irreversible unless we are able to respond to it right away. There's not going to be a second or a second chance here."
I look over at Astella, who has the same look of resolve in her brown eyes. We know despite the cosmic forces aligned against us, despite those impossible odds, we have the tranquil assurance of her faith in us. "Are you ready?"
“No,” she sighs, her pale hands trembling as she takes mine. Now her brutal candor in the face of ultimate trauma has only deepened my love for her. "But I'm willing. For our pack, for our world, for every being that deserves the right to choose their own path, to dream their own dream, to be the person they are and bask in the glory they were born for without sacrificing anything, nor anyone to do so.”
But as our hands meet, and the entirety of multidimensional unity magic bursts through us, something entirely unexpected—the twins wouldn’t expect it, the Architects wouldn’t expect it—happens. The network of eligible realities don’t just oppose the collapse – they start to invert it, opening into new opportunities and perceptions where none existed previously. Instead of getting smaller, reality gets larger and bigger – richer, denser and more complex – every moment.
“No, that is impossible,” the Architect entities scream across every conceivable dimension where reality is not a schism, perfect certainty fracturing like glass pushed from both sides. “Free will doesn’t create – it can only select among that which already exists! Creation needs control, needs order!"
"You're not," Astella murmurs, and the sound of her voice somehow receives across all dimensions at once, filling the universe with gentle but unstoppable weight. “Choice is always power to create. And when individuals choose to freely collaborate, when they pool their diverse gifts through love, rather than fear, they don’t just make choices between existing options – they create new ones. They make the impossible possible."
And as they escape her lips, I realize we're about to find out how mistaken the Architects were regarding their real conviction on what unity and free will mean.
