Chapter 52: The Shattered Bond
Kael's pov
I had faced wars.
I had buried warriors, brothers, and my own parents.
I had stood over blood-soaked soil and never flinched.
But nothing—nothing—cut through me like hearing her whisper that name.
Fianna.
Her real name. The truth I hadn’t seen. The truth she’d buried from me with every smile, every word, every stolen glance.
I walked away because if I had stayed, if I had let myself look at her a second longer, I would have torn this camp to pieces.
My wolf raged inside me, snarling, thrashing against my chest. She’s ours. Ours. How could she lie?
I clenched my fists until blood slicked my palms. The burn of it barely anchored me.
The night air outside was sharp, cold, but it didn’t clear the haze in my mind. I paced, my boots crunching over dry earth, my breath coming in harsh pulls. Every sound around me was too loud, every scent too sharp. My wolf’s fury bled into mine, poisoning everything with the metallic taste of betrayal.
She lied.
She looked me in the eyes, and she lied.
“Kael.”
Derek’s voice slithered out from the camp behind me, mocking, too calm for the storm he’d unleashed.
I didn’t turn. My hands flexed once, claws threatening to burst through my skin. “Stay where you are.”
He laughed softly, the sound grating. “Why? Afraid I’ll tell you more truths you can’t handle?”
A growl ripped from my throat, sharp and guttural, vibrating the air between us. “One more word and I’ll rip that smug tongue from your mouth.”
“Ah.” His footsteps crunched closer anyway, deliberate, testing me. “So you do care.”
I spun then, fury exploding out of me, my wolf’s golden eyes blazing through mine. “Care?” My voice was thunder. “She lied. She let me believe she was someone else—while all this time she was her. The Luna who betrayed me. The Luna who let me throw her into the darkness thinking she was guilty.”
Derek’s smirk widened, cold and satisfied. “Exactly.”
And the truth hit me then—he had wanted this. He had wanted me broken, off balance.
My chest heaved. I turned away from him, forcing distance before I lost control. My wolf pressed harder, snarling, demanding to return to her, to drag her out of his reach.
But another part of me… the man in me… wanted to collapse.
I remembered every look she’d given me. The way her lips trembled when she smiled, like she wasn’t sure she deserved to. The way her wolf had answered mine, even when she fought it. The way I had almost believed—almost let myself hope—that she wasn’t like the others.
And it was all a lie.
Or was it?
That thought broke through like a splinter. My wolf stilled. I saw her again—not the name, not the betrayal, but her. Her tears, her voice cracking when she said, I’m sorry.
A lie doesn’t bleed like that. A liar doesn’t look at you as if she’s breaking apart inside.
My hands trembled. I couldn’t breathe.
Derek stepped into my silence, voice curling with triumph. “You see, Kael… you never knew her. But I did. I’ve known her longer than you. Known what she is, what she’s capable of. And while you were blind, I was watching. I was waiting.”
My wolf surged, slamming against me, demanding I tear him apart. But I forced myself still, my voice low, sharp enough to cut. “Touch her, and I’ll end you.”
Derek only chuckled. “End me? No, Alpha. You can’t even decide if you hate her or if you still want her. And that’s where I win.”
He turned then, retreating back toward the camp, his words echoing in the night. “Because no matter what name she wears, no matter what face she shows—you’ll never stop craving her.”
The ground trembled under my claws as they finally pushed free, gouging into the dirt. My wolf howled inside me, furious, wounded, desperate.
And I knew Derek was right.
Even with her betrayal burning in my chest like fire, even with her name shattering everything I thought I knew—
I still wanted her.
The bond between us pulled like a chain, raw and bleeding, dragging me back toward the camp, toward her.
But I couldn’t go. Not yet. Not while my hands still shook with rage. Not while the storm inside me threatened to tear her apart instead of hold her.
So I stayed in the dark, pacing like a caged beast, my wolf clawing at my skin, my heart breaking in ways I didn’t know it still could.
And in the silence of the night, I swore one thing:
Fianna or Elena, liar or Luna, I would uncover every secret she had buried.
And when I did, I would decide if she was mine to claim… or mine to destroy.
