Chapter 74 THE CHOICE OF FIRE

Chapter 74 THE CHOICE OF FIRE
Wind tears through the clearing the moment the light explodes out of me.

It roars around my rising body, whipping my hair into a silver storm and ripping leaves from trembling branches. The air vibrates so violently it buzzes in my teeth and sinks into my bones. Every breath feels shattered.

But the Goddess does not release me.

Her presence coils around my spine like a serpent of light, tightening with every heartbeat. She anchors herself deeper, digging her claws into the center of my being. It feels like she is dragging me inward, pulling me toward surrender, toward silence, toward becoming her.

My scream breaks into a ragged cry as she crushes the edges of my soul.

Yield, child.

“No.” My limbs shake as I claw at the invisible force pressing against my chest. “I will not disappear.”

You were never meant to remain.

Her voice is frost against my skull, ancient and merciless. I feel her spreading inside me, threads of divinity latching onto my ribs, binding themselves to my lungs, weaving through my nerves. My skin glows so blindingly bright I can no longer see my hands, only white fire.

“Get out,” I whisper. “Get out.”

I am what you carry.

What you inherited.

What you will become.

“No. I am Selene Thorne.”

You are Moonfire.

“I am my own.”

For a heartbeat, her presence hesitates. It is the smallest pause, but it is real. My defiance unsettles her.

And in that thin breath of space, the vision slips in.

Not like the violent ones before.

This one arrives quietly, soft as the first inhale after drowning.

A cliff overlooks a valley of glowing flowers. A whole moon hangs low above a peaceful sky. A young girl sits at the edge with her legs swinging over empty air. She hums to herself, carefree and bright.

My breath stutters.

She looks like me.

No. She is me. A younger version with soft eyes and innocence untouched by fate.

The Goddess stands beside the child. She watches her not with love or tenderness, but with confusion, as if examining something she has never understood.

“Do you want power,” she asks the girl.

The child shrugs. “What is power?”

“The ability to change the world.”

The girl plucks a glowing flower. “The world changes anyway.”

The Goddess kneels, expression unreadable. “Then what do you want, child?”

The girl studies the flower, holding its petals between her tiny fingers. She smiles gently.

“I want to love.”

The vision splinters.

I gasp so sharply it feels like the air slices my lungs.

And the Goddess snarls inside me.

Sentiment.

Weakness.

Irrelevant.

“It is the only thing that makes me human,” I whisper. “And you cannot take it.”

Love is a cage.

“Love is what survives.”

Power shudders through the clearing as the Goddess surges angrily, tearing through my barriers. My back arches. Light rips along my skin in jagged lines.

Heat floods my veins.

Pressure builds behind my ribs.

My bones hum with divine fury.

Her voice cuts through my mind like a blade.

If you resist, the world will break.

Your heart will break.

Your bond will break.

Damien.

His face slams into my thoughts. His dark hair. His storm-colored eyes. The way he held me when I was more fire than flesh. The way he whispered my name like a promise.

The ache in my chest swells.

The Goddess senses it and coils tighter around the memory.

Yes.

Him.

A soft memory pulses through me. Damien’s lips brushing my forehead. His fingers tangled with mine. His body shielding mine on the battlefield. His voice saying, I will burn beside you.

Pain lances through me.

The Goddess clamps down on the memory with a crushing force.

Love will be the first thing to die.

“No.”

My body twists violently mid-air. The Shadow Wolf leaps from the ground, desperate to reach me, but an unseen force slams it back. It whimpers, claws tearing grooves in the earth.

Choose, Selene.

Her voice fills the sky, the ground, my bloodstream.

Either surrender your humanity and let me live…

Light brightens near my heart, searing hot.

…or cling to your mortal attachments and let the world burn.

Everything stills.

The wind.

The light.

The forest.

For the first time, she frames my destiny as a choice. Not fate, not inevitability.

A choice.

A choice she believes I am too weak to make.

I breathe through the agony clawing down my spine. My vision sways. My limbs tremble uncontrollably.

“What happens,” I whisper, “if I choose myself?”

You die.

The words hit me like a physical blow.

Cold.

Final.

Absolute.

“And if I choose you?” My voice cracks. “If I surrender?”

You become me.

Forever.

No Damien.

No wolf.

No Selene.

Only a Goddess wearing my skin, moving my body, speaking with my stolen voice.

A ghost of who I was.

A cage.

My fingers curl. A quiet fury rises inside me, not divine or destructive but entirely human. The kind of fury born from love, loss, and survival.

“I will not choose either,” I whisper.

The Goddess freezes.

Impossible.

“It is the only way.”

Heat pulses through my chest again. This time it warms rather than burns. My heart remembers Damien’s touch, the soft brush of his breath on my neck, the way he said, I will not lose you.

My wolf stirs inside me.

Still mine.

Still fighting.

She snarls at the Goddess.

We do not bow.

The Goddess’s fury explodes, a blast of white light tearing through my consciousness.

You will bow, child.

Or you will die.

“No.” I grit my teeth. “I will become something else.”

What?

“Something neither of us has ever been.”

The trees shudder.

The moon pulses.

The ground vibrates beneath my feet.

My hands open as light gathers between my palms. It pours outward in shining rivers that wash over the clearing.

My voice rises, tearing through the air.

“I choose fire… but not yours.”

Moonfire surges from my chest.

Wild.

Unbound.

Not divine.

Not cursed.

Mine.

The Goddess screams.

The forest screams.

The sky screams.

The power splits through me, bright enough to break the night. My body feels like it cracks apart and reforms in the same breath.

Then I fall.

I collapse into the glowing moss, gasping as silver light spills from me in waves. But it is not leaving. It is reshaping itself. Adjusting to the shape of my soul.

Becoming mine.

The Goddess recoils, her presence flickering.

Shrinking.

Afraid.

For the first time, she fears me.

What have you done?

I lift my head. My breath trembles. My pulse glows beneath my skin. My voice is raw but steady.

“I did not choose you. And I did not choose death.”

She stares.

Silent.

Shaken.

“Then what have you chosen,” she whispers.

I breathe once.

Slow.

Steady.

Certain.

“The chance to rewrite fate.”

The moon cracks again.

Wider.

Louder.

Final.
