Chapter 169: Shattered Reflections
Chapter 169: Shattered Reflections
“Die with me!”
Shadow-Lyla’s scream was raw, jagged, as she launched forward, silver-black flames sparking off her blade. The air between them split, the dreamscape trembling under the weight of their clash.
Lyla caught the strike, steel-on-steel ringing like thunder. “I don’t die here,” she growled, shoving back.
Shadow-Lyla snarled, pressing closer, their faces inches apart. “Then I’ll drag Eli down instead.”
The words lit something primal inside Lyla. Her fire erupted, surging across her body until her twin had to shield her eyes.
“You don’t touch him,” Lyla spat. “You don’t touch anyone.”
Their blades locked, sparks flying. The shadow grinned, teeth sharp and cruel. “You’re lying. You’re already me. You always will be.”
“Wrong.” Lyla twisted, wrenched the dagger from her twin’s hand, and slammed it into the earth. Silver fire roared outward in a shockwave, tearing the ground apart.
The vision shattered.
Flames gone. Forest gone. Everything gone.
Leaving only her reflection on her knees, coughing, broken.
Shadow-Lyla looked up, silver tears streaking her face. “If you kill me, you kill yourself.”
Lyla’s grip tightened on her blade. “No. If I kill you, I free myself.”
The twin smiled faintly. Almost sad. “Or you unleash what I’ve been holding back.”
Lyla froze.
Before she could demand what that meant, her reflection lunged not with steel, but with bare hands shoving something black and molten straight into Lyla’s chest.
Pain ripped through her, sharp and searing, like her veins were on fire. She screamed, collapsing, clutching at the spreading darkness under her skin.
Shadow-Lyla whispered into her ear as she faded. “I’m not your weakness, Lyla. I’m your lock. And you just broke me.”
Then the reflection dissolved into smoke, leaving Lyla writhing in the dark.
Eli jerked as Lyla’s body arched violently, fire lashing from her skin. “Lyla!”
Dani grabbed his arm. “She’s burning up ”
“No.” Eli’s voice was desperate. “She’s fighting something inside. Don’t touch her.”
Jonas stared, his expression unreadable. “It’s not just inside. Look at the moon.”
The Blood Moon pulsed brighter, bleeding across the sky, and a ripple of shadow tore through the clearing, bending the trees as if they were bowing.
“Shit,” Dani whispered. “What the hell did she just unleash?”
Eli tightened his hold on Lyla’s hand, his voice breaking. “Come back. Please. Don’t let it take you.”
Her scream tore through the night half rage, half agony.
The ground split beneath her.
And something answered.
The scream tore from Lyla’s throat, so raw it split the night apart.
The ground beneath her cracked wider, glowing fissures crawling outward like veins of molten shadow. The forest shook. Wolves staggered to their knees, claws digging into the earth as if the very air was pressing them down.
Dani cursed. “She’s, she’s tearing the damn forest open!”
Eli didn’t move. He held her hand tighter, eyes locked on her face, silver light pouring from his pupils. “No. Something’s coming through her.”
A gust of freezing wind ripped across the clearing, carrying whispers familiar, awful whispers. Wolves clamped their ears, but Eli heard it clearly. Not gone. Never gone. Only waiting.
“Shadows,” Jonas breathed. His voice was sharp with dread. “She didn’t kill it. She cracked the seal.”
“What seal?” Mason demanded, bracing himself as the earth bucked under their feet.
Jonas’ gaze flicked to Lyla, writhing, choking, her skin glowing with both fire and darkness. “The one Aleron never told her about.”
A clawed hand black as obsidian, smoke curling from its joints burst out of the fissure at Lyla’s side.
The pack staggered back.
“No, no, no ” Dani’s voice shook. “That’s not her. Tell me that’s not her.”
The hand tightened on the dirt. Then another emerged. A torso. A head.
The thing dragged itself up from the crack, its form shifting like molten shadow given flesh. It had no eyes, only a jagged grin that stretched too wide, too human, too hungry.
And all the while, Lyla screamed.
Eli dropped to his knees, clutching her shoulders. “Stay with me. Don’t you let it take you.”
Her eyes snapped open silver fire blazing.
The shadow-thing froze mid-rise, tilting its head like it recognized her. Then it hissed, a sound that shook the trees, and vanished into smoke.
For a moment, silence.
Then Lyla spoke, her voice ragged but carrying something that wasn’t hers.
“They’re not free yet.”
Her chest heaved.
Her gaze locked on Eli’s.
“But they will be.”
The fissures pulsed again.
The clearing was chaos. Wolves staggered on trembling legs, the earth still shuddering from the crack that split its heart.
Eli held Lyla against him, her body burning hot and freezing cold at once. “Stay with me. You hear me? Stay.”
Her fingers clawed at his arm, nails digging into his skin. Her eyes flickered silver, then black, then silver again. The war inside her wasn’t over. It had just begun.
Dani crouched beside them, sweat plastering her hair to her face. “Tell me what to do, Eli! We can’t fight whatever that was if she’s part of it now.”
“No,” Eli snapped, his voice shaking. “She’s not part of it. She’s fighting it.”
Jonas stepped forward, his face ashen. “No, Eli. She’s housing it. That thing wasn’t trying to kill her. It was trying to use her.”
The words hit like a blade.
Lyla’s head jerked back, her body arching. A guttural sound ripped from her throat not a scream, not a cry, but something inhuman.
The fissures in the ground pulsed, shadows writhing inside like trapped serpents. The pack bristled, ready for an attack, but none came. Instead, the shadows seemed to listen to her.
Eli’s heart stopped. “They’re responding to her.”
“No,” Jonas corrected grimly. “They’re waiting for her command.”
The wolves froze. Even Dani had no words.
Lyla collapsed forward into Eli’s chest, shaking. Her breath came in harsh, ragged pulls. “It’s not gone,” she whispered, voice low and raw. “The whisper… it’s still here. It’s everywhere.”
Eli’s arms tightened around her. “We’ll fight it. Like we always do. Together.”
But Lyla’s next words made the blood drain from every face in the clearing.
“You don’t understand.” Her eyes opened again, glowing faintly with that fractured silver-black fire. “I didn’t kill my shadow. I became it.”
The fissures beneath her feet split wider. A second clawed hand rose from the earth.
