Chapter 165: The Split

Chapter 165: The Split

“Eli don’t let go!” Lyla’s scream tore through the void.

“I’m not letting you go!” His arms crushed around her waist as they plummeted. Wind howled, shadows clawed, and whispers pressed against her skull. Mine. Mine. Mine.

The dagger in her grip burned hotter, its runes glowing, fusing itself into her palm.

“Throw it away!” Eli roared over the storm.

“I I can’t!” Her hand wouldn’t open. The blade had already chosen her.

“Then I’ll tear it from you ”

They hit hard.

Stone cracked beneath them, the impact rattling through her bones. Eli shielded her, blood streaking his mouth, but he was still on his feet before she could even breathe.

“You’re insane,” she gasped.

“You married insane,” he shot back, jaw tight.

The ground lit up beneath them runes flaring in black and violet, sealing them in a circle. From the shadows, the Lost Wolf stepped forward, reborn, flawless, her mismatched eyes glowing with lethal hunger.

“Welcome,” she purred. “To the heart of me.”

Eli shoved Lyla behind him, blade raised. “You’ll never touch her.”

The Lost Wolf tilted her head, smiling sharply. “I already am.” Her gaze dropped to the dagger and Lyla screamed as black veins surged higher up her arm, crawling toward her chest.

“Stay with me!” Eli caught her, his hands framing her face. “Breathe, Lyla. Breathe!”

The Lost Wolf circled, slow and taunting. “Every heartbeat, she’s closer to me. You can fight. You can bleed. But her soul is mine.”

Heat surged through Lyla, dark and intoxicating. It wasn’t just pain. It was pleasure. It clawed at her nerves, whispered freedom, begged surrender.

“Eli ” her voice broke, body trembling.

He pressed his forehead to hers, voice ragged. “No. Not her. Not the dagger. Look at me.”

The Lost Wolf’s smirk widened. “Ah. The tether. How sweet. Let’s see how long it lasts.”

With a flick of her wrist, shadows ripped Eli away from her, slamming him into the stone wall. His sword clattered to the floor.

“Eli!” Lyla struggled, but the dagger bound her, dragging her to her knees.

The Lost Wolf knelt, her icy hand stroking Lyla’s cheek. “Why cling to weakness? With me, you’ll rule. No Guardian. No High Alpha. No Beta holding you back. Just power.”

Eli snarled, straining against the shadows. “Don’t you dare listen to her! You’re mine. You’ve always been mine.” His voice cracked. “Don’t leave me now.”

The Lost Wolf leaned closer to Lyla, lips grazing her ear. “Choose. Him… or me.”

The dagger pulsed violently, black light exploding outward. Lyla’s scream tore the air as agony split her chest

until suddenly, it wasn’t agony at all.

It was separation.

A shadow peeled out of her body, rising tall and solid. Lyla froze as she stared at her double her same face, same form except the eyes, burning black fire.

Her doppelgänger smirked, twirling a dagger of pure shadow in her hand.

The Lost Wolf’s mismatched eyes gleamed. “Ah. Finally.”

Eli’s bloodied face went white with rage. “No. No, no, no ”

The shadow-Lyla turned to him, her grin wicked. “Don’t worry, Beta. I’ll love you better than she ever did.”

And then she lunged.

Shadow-Lyla slammed into Eli, faster than the real Lyla had ever moved. He blocked with instinct, grabbing her wrists, but her strength was feral, unhinged, twice as wild, twice as cruel.

Her laugh was Lyla’s laugh, twisted, dark. “Feels familiar, doesn’t it? My body. My scent. But better. Stronger.”

Eli gritted his teeth, straining to keep the dagger from plunging into his chest. “You’re not her.”

“Oh, but I am.” She leaned close, her lips brushing his ear. “I’m the part of her that wants you without fear. Without rules. Without holding back.”

Lyla screamed from the floor, fighting the shadows binding her. “Eli! Don’t listen to her!”

But the dagger binding her pulsed again, sending shockwaves through her chest, forcing her to feel every movement of her twin. Every brush, every whispered word it was like watching her own reflection betray her.

Eli roared, shoving Shadow-Lyla back, but she only twisted in midair, landing on her feet with predatory grace. Her smile was wicked. “Mmm. You like resisting. That makes breaking you even sweeter.”

The Lost Wolf clapped slowly from the shadows. “Delicious, isn’t it? She’s everything you repress, Lyla. Everything you deny yourself. While you fight to be noble, she’ll do what you never could.”

Eli staggered back to Lyla’s side, sword in hand, his knuckles white. He crouched, cupping her face for a heartbeat. “Stay with me. You hear me? I don’t care what she says you’re the only one I bleed for.”

Lyla swallowed hard, tears stinging her eyes. But the shadows tugged again, dragging her forward as if urging her to choose.

Shadow-Lyla stalked closer, dragging the tip of her dagger along the stone, sparks flying. “Then bleed for me, Eli. Let’s see if you can tell us apart when I’m on top of you.”

Eli snarled, swinging his blade steel meeting shadow with a thunderous crack. Sparks and black flame lit the chamber as the two fought, fast and brutal.

Lyla’s heart tore in two. Every strike Eli landed felt like it rattled inside her. Every cut Shadow-Lyla dodged twisted her stomach like betrayal.

The Lost Wolf leaned in, voice silken. “Do you feel it? That’s because she’s still you. Every wound she takes, you’ll feel. Every kiss she steals, you’ll taste. That’s the price of your denial.”

Lyla screamed, summoning what power she could. Roots erupted from the ground, slamming against the runes that bound her. They cracked. Splintered. She forced herself upright, her body burning.

Shadow-Lyla hissed, shoving Eli back into the wall with a blast of dark energy. His sword flew from his grip.

Pinned, breathless, Eli glared up at her.

Shadow-Lyla straddled him, dagger poised at his throat. Her eyes glowed like coals. “I’ll ask one last time, Beta. Which Lyla do you want? The one who fears you’ll break? Or the one who wants to break you first?”

Eli’s voice was raw, guttural. “I’ll take the real one. Even if it kills me.”

And before Shadow-Lyla could strike

The real Lyla ripped free, glowing with light, slamming into her twin with the force of a hurricane.

The chamber exploded with shadow and flame.

The chamber shook as Lyla and her shadow twin collided, light and darkness ripping the air apart.

Stone cracked. Roots split. The ground itself seemed to recoil from the clash.

Eli rolled to his feet, snatching up his sword. His chest heaved as he searched the smoke. “Lyla!”

Two figures stumbled into view. Both identical. Both bleeding. Both snarling.

For a terrifying second he couldn’t tell them apart.

The first Lyla’s eyes blazed silver, steady and wild with determination. The second burned crimson, a predator’s hunger curling her lips.

They lunged at each other again, claws raking, teeth bared. Their movements were mirrors perfect, terrifying reflections.

Eli cursed under his breath, circling the chaos, desperate for an opening. His instincts screamed at him to strike, but his heart froze him. One wrong move, and he could cut down the wrong one.

“Can’t tell, can you?” The Lost Wolf’s voice slithered through the smoke. “That’s the beauty of it. Which Lyla bleeds for you? Which one will bite when you kiss her?”

Eli ignored him, his gaze locked on the fight. He searched for something, anything that would tell him which one was real.

The twins broke apart, circling. Their voices overlapped, a twisted harmony.

“I’m her.”
“No, I’m her.”
“She hesitates. I don’t.”
“She lies. I don’t.”

Then, at the same moment, both shouted: “Eli!”

He froze. His grip trembled. His soul split in two.

The shadow laughed, cruel and sharp. “See? Even he can’t choose. He doesn’t want the noble little Guardian. He wants me.”

The real Lyla staggered, her chest tight with more than pain. Her twin’s words hit where the blade couldn’t. The part of her that feared, feared Eli wanted more than she could ever give flared.

But Eli roared, silencing both. He leveled his blade, voice raw. “I know exactly who she is.”

He stepped forward, planting himself between them. “The real Lyla isn’t flawless. She doubts. She stumbles. She breaks. But she gets up again. Every damn time. And you ” he spat at the shadow “you’ll never be her.”

Lyla’s breath hitched. For a heartbeat, the shadow’s confidence faltered.

Then her lips curved in a slow, wicked grin. “Good answer.”

She vanished in a blur of shadow reappearing behind him.

Eli spun too late.

The dagger bit deep into his side.

Blood sprayed.

“ELI!” Lyla’s scream tore the chamber in half as he dropped to his knees, blade clattering to stone.

The shadow leaned close, her whisper ice in his ear. “Let’s see if she’s strong enough to save you before you bleed out.”

The dagger twisted. Eli’s gasp was sharp, brutal.

The real Lyla’s power detonated, light surging through her veins until her skin burned silver. She didn’t think. She didn’t hesitate.

She launched herself at her twin, eyes blazing, voice a promise carved from fury.

“You touched him. Now you die.”

The clash of Guardian and Shadow lit the chamber brighter than fire, brighter than moonlight bright enough to swallow everything in blinding silver.
