Chapter 67 - Something Strange
“Live?” Veris scoffed. “There is no living for anyone with that decision.”
Something in Ikrus eyes made him stop talking.
Ikrus walked off, refusing to listen to him as he started searching around for Arlo.
It shouldn’t be this hard to find him. Except that Veris had done something to Arlo to conceal his scent.
By the Moon, why was his friend so annoying sometimes!
He needed his son already. He needed to run back. Give him to her. See how she was doing.
He had left her side for too long.
Now that he was thinking clearly, the words he had said out of anger while he left the room would mean something entirely different to her.
Aniya was one to make brash decisions when she was frightened, she would do anything for Arlo too.
This delay in taking his son home wasn’t doing anything good for either of them.
“By the Moon, where is he?!”
Veris clenched and unclenched his fists by his side. But he still gave no response.
Ikrus fought the urge to wriggle the neck of his best friend, but his voice did not hide his fury. “I’ll tear this place down if that is what I have to do to find him.”
“Look at you. You have already changed with one night inside her. Blinded by lust!”
“You do not speak to her in that way!”
“If you continue with this madness and die here, you will bring no honour to your mother’s blood!”
Ikrus stiffened and took a restrained step of anger towards him.
How dare he speak of his mother?
“I think my mother will prefer me not killing my mate, just like her mate did to her.” He dragged in a breath. “Where is he?”
He knew Veris would never do anything to the child but he was keeping them apart for too long.
He was trying to stall, believing that with time he would be able to convince Ikrus to see reason. Hoping that whatever had been strengthened by completing the process would go slack a little and it would lead him right back to the plan they had decided on.
He knew what Veris was doing and he knew that it would not work.
He had already decided what he would do.
This was a waste of both their time. And Aniya.
His mate must be losing her mind right now.
Because he knew that Veris wouldn’t give him an answer anytime soon, he continued searching everywhere as quickly and as non-violently as possible.
He didn’t want to hurt Arlo.
“Can you just stop acting on these foolish emotions for a moment and think.” Veris said, following him, not making any physical attempts to stop him. “Take a break, nothing will happen to your son. Do you not trust me?”
Ikrus did not answer. His search continued. His fury seeping into his action.
A controlled violence.
“Let us have a drink on the roof and figure out this madness before it gets out of hand.”
“Madness?!” Ikrus snapped his attention to him finally. “No, it is not madness.” He sank his fingers through his hair, before dragging it across his face. “It just is.”
Veris was about to speak again when he went unbelievably still.
He quickly yanked Ikrus’s hand towards him.
Something shifted in his expression, and when he looked up at Ikrus, fear consumed his gaze.
“What is this?” He asked gravely.
“She bit me.”
Veris’ hand trembled and fear crawled into Ikrus’s heart. Not for hi
m.
“What is it?”
“This. This.” Veris let go of him. “This shouldn’t be.”
