Chapter 75

Chapter 75
What Was Forgotten

When the world reassembled itself, it did so in silence, like a breath held too long finally let go. Gone were the burning glyphs and molten walls of the vault. Instead, we stood in a vast, open expanse lit by twilight, not the sky above, but a memory’s mimicry of it. Silver stars shimmered in fluid constellations, drifting across a ceiling that looked like liquid obsidian. The air was warm and smelled of wild sage and dragon’s breath.
I blinked and turned in a slow circle. We were in what looked like a colossal throne room, but no throne stood at its center. Instead, a dais shaped like a broken ring floated a few feet above the ground, its surface carved with runes I couldn’t recognize. Every footstep echoed with hollow resonance, like the ground remembered more than it showed.
Nyra whispered, “This isn’t the past. It’s the echo of something older. A living memory.”
Kaelen stepped beside me, eyes scanning the endless chamber. “Where are we?”
“I don’t know,” Ember said softly, her eyes distant. “But I think we’re inside the shard.”
Cambria exhaled sharply. “Inside it?”
Selene nodded slowly. “The origin shard was forged as a vessel, not just of power, but of memory. We’re standing inside its heart.”
A low chime echoed across the space. One by one, pale silhouettes shimmered into existence around us, beings robed in flame-colored silk, their faces hidden beneath dragon-shaped masks. Their robes shifted with colors that mimicked fire: red, gold, and violet.
“Echoes,” Raya breathed. “Guardians of the Flame.”
One of the masked figures stepped forward, its voice neither male nor female, yet somehow both, layered and resonant.
“You are not the first to seek balance. But you may be the last.”
The others formed a circle around us, their presence more comforting than threatening. The lead guardian motioned toward the broken ring of the dais.
“Each seal fractured not by time, but by forgetting. You must remember what was sacrificed to rebuild what was broken.”
Tara frowned. “That’s pretty vague for ancient ghost people.”
Kaelen elbowed her lightly. “Maybe let the living relics talk.”
The dais began to glow beneath our feet. Images burst to life in the air, visions from long ago.
A child with ember-bright eyes wielding a flame too large for her hands. A dragon turning its heart to stone, sealing away its power. A circle of seven, guardians, flameborn, wolf-blooded, winged, standing before a flaming tree whose roots touched every world.
And at the center of it all... a girl with silver fire in her eyes and a scar shaped like a crescent moon.
Me.
I gasped.
Kaelen grabbed my hand. “Riley?”
“I... I’ve seen this before. In dreams. In the pool beneath the first heart.”
Nyra stirred. “Because you’ve always carried it.”
Ember moved toward the vision. “This isn’t just a memory. It’s prophecy.”
The flame tree flickered. One of the guardians turned toward her.
“All prophecy begins as remembrance. You carry the flame of ending. She carries the flame of becoming. Only together can the seals be restored.”
“Wait,” Cambria said, frowning. “Flame of ending? Flame of becoming? Are you saying they’re two halves of the same force?”
The guardian nodded. “Every fire must know both its birth and its death to burn true.”
Raya stepped closer, her hand outstretched. “Why now? Why show us this instead of guiding us before?”
“Because the balance was broken by betrayal. Only those untouched by ambition can reignite the truth.”
Selene lowered her staff, looking between Ember and me. “You were chosen because you were born outside the line of corruption.”
Ember's voice dropped. “But that means... we were meant to face this. All of it.”
Nyra growled softly. “Fate is a cruel beast.”
Suddenly, the ground rumbled beneath us. Cracks formed across the chamber floor, light spilling out like molten veins.
Selene raised her staff. “The vault is destabilizing!”
“No,” Ember said, turning toward the ring. “It’s waking up. It’s not just memory—it’s a gate.”
Kaelen’s hand tightened around mine. “Then we need to move. Before it collapses with us inside.”
The lead guardian lifted a hand, and a pathway of glowing flame carved itself through the air, forming a bridge of ember light.
“Follow the tether. Seal the flame. Reforge the balance.”
A soft voice, different from the others, rang through the air behind us. A new figure emerged, smaller, more fluid. She removed her dragon mask, revealing a youthful face marked by ancient sorrow. Her eyes were pools of starlight.
“You carry us,” she said to me. “You carry all of us who fell. Let not our end become yours.”
I stepped forward, swallowing the lump in my throat. “Then help us end this right.”
With one final glance at the silver fire around us, I nodded. “Let’s finish this.”
Kaelen leaned close. “No matter what we find next... I’m with you.”
Ember looked back at Selene and Raya. “And I’ll burn through anything that tries to stop us.”
We stepped into the light together, toward whatever waited beyond the final veil. As we crossed the bridge, I heard the guardians whisper in unison, their voices curling like smoke:
“Ashes to echo. Flame to form. Memory to truth.”
And behind us, the echo closed.
