Threats and Promises

Threats and Promises
POV: Aria

The old thing that woke up when Luna died isn't waiting around to introduce itself. It reveals its presence by making every streetlight in New Orleans explode at exactly the same time.
I'm still standing over Luna's collapsing body when the darkness hits. Not normal darkness—this is something alive and hungry that makes my First Witch powers recoil in fear.
"What have you done?" I speak to Luna's corpse, but she's beyond answering now.
Through the broken windows, I can hear screaming from the city. Car crashes as drivers suddenly can't see. Buildings shaking as something huge moves beneath the streets. And underneath it all, a sound like laughter that comes from somewhere very old and very evil.
"Aria," Kael says quickly, "we need to get everyone out of here. Now."
But I can't move. Because the darkness isn't just around us—it's inside my head too, showing me pictures of what's coming.
I see New Orleans burning. I see humans and supernatural animals fighting in the streets as ancient monsters pour out of hidden places. I see myself standing in the middle of it all, deciding between saving the city and saving the people I love.
"The Blackwood curse," I breathe, understanding rushing through me like ice water. "Luna wasn't just talking about payback. She was talking about the original curse that killed her family."
"What curse?" Vincent orders, checking his glowing weapon.
"Fifty years ago, when my great-grandmother defeated the Blackwood pack, she didn't just destroy them," I explain frantically. "She expelled them to a place between worlds. But the punishment had a time limit."
Marcus looks at me in horror. "How long?"
"Fifty years," I say sadly. "Luna's death just broke the final seal keeping them trapped."
That's when the floor beneath our feet starts to crack. Not from an earthquake—from something pushing up from below. Something that wants out very badly.
"Everyone out!" Maria shouts, but it's too late.
The floor explodes upward, and the thing that crawls out isn't anything that should live in our world. It looks like a dog, but it's made of shadows and has too many eyes. When it opens its mouth, I can see straight through to the terrible place it came from.
"Finally," the shadow wolf says in a voice like breaking glass. "Fifty years of waiting, and now we're free."
More cracks appear in the floor as more creatures start pushing through. These aren't normal werewolves or magical beings. These are Blackwood pack members who've spent fifty years in a dimension of pure hate, getting stronger and more twisted.
"You," the ghost wolf says, pointing at me with a claw that drips darkness. "You're the one whose blood sealed us away."
"That wasn't me," I say desperately. "That was my great-grandmother."
"Same blood. Same power. Same debt to pay."
The shadow wolf lunges at me, but Kael throws himself between us. His werewolf form crashes into the shadow thing, and they roll across the floor in a tangle of claws and teeth.
But Kael's strikes pass right through the shadow wolf like it's made of smoke.
"You can't fight them with physical force," Maria screams over the chaos. "They're not fully in this world yet!"
"Then how do we stop them?" Vincent orders, firing his glowing weapon at another shadow creature crawling through the floor. The magical bullets slow it down but don't kill it.
"We don't," I realize with growing fear. "At least, not here. They're using this place as an anchor point to bring their whole pack through."
More shadow wolves pour through the cracks, filling the room with darkness and the smell of something that's been dead for too long. But they're not harming anyone except me. They want me especially.
"Why just me?" I ask the first shadow wolf as it throws Kael across the room.
"Because you're the key," it snarls. "The original Luna-Moon witch bound us with her blood. Only the blood of her heir can set us fully free."
"But Luna's already dead. You're already free."
The ghost wolf laughs, and the sound makes my bones ache. "This isn't freedom, little witch. This is just the beginning. We're still trapped between worlds, only able to live in shadows and darkness."
"What do you want?"
"Your blood, freely given. Use your power to bring us fully into this world, and we'll let your friends live."
I look around at the people I love. Kael is bleeding from claw marks that won't heal. Vincent and Marcus are back-to-back, facing creatures they can't really hurt. Maria and Emma are trying to protect the other pack members.
Everyone is here because of me. Everyone is in danger because of my family.
"And if I refuse?" I ask.
"Then we kill everyone in this room. Then we kill everyone in this place. Then we spread across the country, killing every human and supernatural thing we find until you change your mind."
The shadow wolf's eyes glow with ancient hate. "We have nothing but time, little witch. And we have fifty years of anger to work through."
I feel the First Witch power stirring inside me, responding to the danger. I could probably kill these shadow creatures, but it would take everything I have. And if I use all my power now, I won't have anything left to protect the city from whatever else is coming.
"Aria, don't listen to them," Kael says desperately, pulling himself to his feet. "There has to be another way."
"There is," says a new voice from the entry.
Everyone turns to see a person stepping through the chaos. It's a woman, but she's not quite solid. She shimmers like heat waves, and I can see through her to the wall behind.
"Great-grandmother?" I whisper.
The ghost of the original Luna-Moon witch nods at me. "Hello, dear one. I've been waiting a long time to meet you."
"You're dead," the ghost wolf snarls. "We felt your death fifty years ago."
"Death is just another place to visit," my great-grandmother says quietly. "And I've been very busy while I was there."
She turns to me with eyes that look exactly like mine. "Aria, there is another way to stop them. But it will take a sacrifice."
"What kind of sacrifice?"
"You'll have to give up being the First Witch," she says. "Pass all your power to someone else. Without a Luna-Moon witch to anchor them, the Blackwood pack will be pulled back to their prison world."
My heart sinks. "But if I give up my power, I'll just be human. I won't be able to help anyone."
"That's not entirely true," great-grandmother says with a sad smile. "You'll still have your Ravencrest monster blood. You'll just be a very powerful monster instead of the most powerful witch."
"Who would I pass the power to?" I ask.
"Someone with Luna-Moon blood who's strong enough to handle it," she says. "Someone like Detective Rosa Martinez."
I think about Rosa, fighting supernatural creatures in the streets of New Orleans with nothing but determination and newly awakened witch skills.
"Would it work?" I ask.
"It would send the Blackwood pack back to their prison," great-grandmother says. "But Aria, there's something else you need to know."
"What?"
"Once you pass on the First Witch power, you can never get it back. And there's no promise you'll survive the transfer. Most people die when that much magical energy leaves their body."
I look around the room at everyone I love. At Kael, bleeding but still trying to defend me. At my father and Marcus, fighting side by side against impossible odds. At Maria and Emma, who risked everything to save our families.
"How long do I have to decide?" I ask.
The ghost wolf laughs again. "The longer you wait, the stronger we become. Already, more of our pack is breaking through to your world. Soon there will be too many for you to stop, even with your witch power."
Through the broken windows, I can see the black spreading across New Orleans like spilled ink. Buildings are disappearing into dark. People are yelling as more Blackwood pack members hunt them through the streets.
"Aria," great-grandmother says softly, "you have to choose now. Save your power and try to fight an army of shadow wolves, or risk everything to send them back where they belong."
I close my eyes and feel the First Witch power humming through my blood. It's been part of me since I was born, even when I didn't remember having it. Giving it up would be like cutting out my heart.
But keeping it means watching everyone I love die. "I need to ask Rosa if she's willing to accept the power," I say finally.
"No time," the shadow wolf snarls. "Choose now, or we start killing."
It raises its claws toward Kael's throat.
"Wait," I say desperately. "I choose. I'll give up my power."
But as the words leave my mouth, great-grandmother's face changes from sad to terrified.
"Oh no," she whispers. "I made a terrible mistake."
"What mistake?"
"The Blackwood curse isn't just about the shadow pack," she says, her ghostly form beginning to fade. "It's about something much worse. Something that's been sleeping under New Orleans, waiting for the dark to wake it up."
"What's sleeping under New Orleans?" I demand.
But great-grandmother is already missing. "I'm sorry, Aria. I was wrong about everything. You can't give up your power now."
"Why not?"
Her last words chill me to the bone.
"Because the thing that's waking up can only be stopped by the First Witch. And if you're not powerful enough to kill it, it's going to devour every living thing in Louisiana."
The ghost disappears, leaving me with an impossible choice.
Keep my power and try to fight the shadow wolves and the old evil.
Or give up my power to stop the shadow wolves and let the old evil destroy everything anyway.
That's when the ground beneath New Orleans starts to shake, and something that's been asleep for a thousand years begins to wake up.
