Truth and Consequences

Truth and Consequences
POV: Kael

"No!" I roar, lunging toward the bomb remote in Emma's hand.
But I'm too late. Aria steps forward, her words clear and strong despite everything we've been through.
"I'll do it," she says. "I'll take Emma's place."
The countdown timer shows thirty-eight seconds.
"Aria, no!" Vincent shouts, trying to reach his daughter despite his wounded arm.
But Alexander holds up his hand, and something in his presence makes everyone freeze. Even Emma stops smiling.
"There will be no sacrifices tonight," the werewolf king says quietly. "Not while I'm here."
"You can't stop this," Emma says, but her voice wavers. "The bombs are already loaded. Someone has to die, or everyone dies."
"Actually," Alexander says with a cold smile, "there's a third option."
He moves faster than I've ever seen anyone move. One second he's standing across the room, the next he's behind Emma with his hand on her throat.
"You can disarm the bombs and surrender," he tells her softly. "Or I can break your neck right now and let Rosa try to figure out your explosive system in thirty-five seconds."
Emma's eyes go wide with fear. "You wouldn't. I'm your child too."
"You're my granddaughter who just threatened to murder dozens of innocent people," Alexander corrects. "Blood doesn't excuse everything, child."
Thirty seconds.
"Emma, please," Aria asks. "This isn't what you really want. You're not a killer."
"I am exactly what this family made me," Emma snarls back. "A monster created by your good intentions and his brutality."
She jerks her head toward me, and I feel the familiar stab of guilt. Emma died because of our family's war. She became this twisted thing because Aria tried to save her life.
Twenty-five seconds.
"I know you blame me," I tell Emma anxiously. "I know you hate me for living when you died. But these people didn't do anything wrong. Let them go."
"These people?" Emma smiles bitterly. "Vincent ordered the attack that killed our parents. Marcus gave the order to burn down half of New Orleans looking for payback. Rosa has been influencing everyone for twenty years. None of you are innocent."
Twenty seconds.
"What about me?" Aria asks softly. "Am I innocent?"
Emma's face crumples for just a second, showing the broken girl underneath the monster. "You tried to save me. But you saved him first. You picked your mate over your friend."
"I was eighteen," Aria says desperately. "I was scared and confused and trying to help everyone. I made the best choices I could."
"Your best choices got me killed."
Fifteen seconds.
That's when Murphy does something that surprises everyone. He pulls out his own gun and aims it straight at Rosa.
"Martinez, you're under arrest for conspiracy, murder, and terrorism," he says quietly. "Surrender now or I shoot."
Rosa spins toward him, her power crackling. "You can't arrest me, Murphy. I have power you can't imagine."
"Maybe," Murphy says. "But I have backup you don't know about."
He nods toward the broken windows, and suddenly the room fills with red laser dots. Sniper weapons, all aimed at Rosa and Emma.
Ten seconds.
"Government supernatural response team," Murphy says. "Turns out the feds have known about werewolves for a lot longer than anyone thought. They've just been waiting for the right time to make contact."
"Impossible," Alexander says, but he sounds more interested than angry.
"Very possible," Murphy responds. "And they've been watching this situation develop for weeks."
Five seconds.
Emma looks around desperately, realizing she's stuck. Rosa's power is flickering as she tries to decide which threat to face first.
Four seconds.
"Emma," I say quickly. "You don't have to die for this. There's still time to choose differently."
Three seconds.
Emma looks at me with tears in her eyes. "I'm sorry, Kael. For everything."
Two seconds.
She raises the remote control to throw it away from everyone.
One second.
But before she can press the disarm button, Rosa screams in rage and unleashes her magic straight at Aria.
The blast of witch energy hits my mate like a lightning bolt, throwing her across the room. She slams into the wall and doesn't get up.
"ARIA!" I scream, forgetting about everything else.
The timer hits zero.
But nothing happens.
Emma is looking at her remote control in confusion. "I don't understand. It should have..."
"Should have what?" a new voice says from the doorway.
We all turn to see a woman I don't recognize. She's older, maybe fifty, with gray hair and kind eyes. But there's power coming from her that makes even Alexander step back.
"Should have killed everyone in the building?" the woman continues happily. "Yes, it should have. If the bombs were real."
Emma's face goes white. "What?"
"I'm Sarah Luna-Moon," the woman says. "Rosa's aunt. And I've been undoing her work for the past six months."
Rosa looks at the newcomer in shock. "Aunt Sarah? But you're supposed to be dead."
"Death is relative in our family, dear," Sarah says sadly. "Your mother taught me that before Marcus Ravencrest murdered her."
She walks into the room calmly, ignoring all the weapons pointing at her. "I've been tracking your revenge plan for years, Rosa. Trying to stop you before you destroyed yourself and everyone around you."
"You ruined everything!" Rosa screams, preparing another magical attack.
But Sarah just waves her hand, and Rosa's magic dies instantly. "I'm a Luna-Moon witch, child. You're only half-trained. Your power means nothing to me."
Emma drops the useless radio control. "The bombs..."
"Were disarmed three hours ago," Sarah says. "Along with the backup explosives Rosa planted around the city."
She looks around the room at all of us. "Did you really think I'd let my niece commit mass murder? Even for revenge?"
Murphy lowers his gun slightly. "Ma'am, are you saying Rosa Martinez has planted explosives throughout New Orleans?"
"Had planted," Sarah corrects. "Past tense. My group and I spent the evening making sure no innocent people would be hurt by my family's desire for vengeance."
I crawl over to where Aria is lying unconscious against the wall. She's alive, but barely. Rosa's magic has left burn marks on her skin.
"She needs medical attention," I tell Alexander desperately.
"She needs more than that," Alexander says sadly. "Rosa's magic was meant to kill werewolves. Aria's mixed nature might protect her, but..."
"But she might die anyway," I finish.
Alexander nods. "The next few hours will tell us if she's strong enough to survive."
Sarah approaches us, her face concerned. "I might be able to help. Luna-Moon magic is healing magic as much as it is harmful."
"Don't you dare touch her," Rosa snarls, even though her own powers are gone.
"Rosa, enough," Sarah says strongly. "This has gone far enough. Your mother would be ashamed of what you've become."
"My mother would want justice!" Rosa screams.
"Your mother would want peace," Sarah answers sadly. "She died trying to protect humans and monsters alike. You've twisted her memory into something ugly."
She kneels next to Aria and puts her hands on my mate's forehead. A soft, warm light begins to glow around her fingers.
"Will she live?" I ask desperately.
"I don't know," Sarah says. "But I'll do everything I can."
As Sarah works her healing magic, Murphy steps forward with handcuffs.
"Rosa Martinez, you're under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, terrorism, and about fifty other charges," he says.
But as he goes for Rosa, she suddenly grins.
"Did you really think this was my only plan?" she asks.
She pulls out one final gadget from her jacket. Not a bomb trigger. Something else.
A phone.
"I sent a very detailed message to every supernatural creature in Louisiana about tonight's events," she says. "About the werewolf princess who survived her first change. About the government teams with silver guns. About the fact that people now know we exist."
Murphy goes pale. "What did you do?"
"I started a war," Rosa says simply. "Not between the Castellanos and Ravencrests. Between humans and supernatural beings."
She shows us the phone screen. Hundreds of messages. All sent to werewolf packs, vampire covens, witch circles, and other creatures throughout the area.
All saying the same thing: "The humans know about us. They're going to kill us all. Strike first or die."
"You've just declared war on the entire human population of Louisiana," Murphy breathes.
"I've given my people the chance to survive," Rosa corrects. "Because in about an hour, every supernatural creature in the state is going to descend on New Orleans looking for revenge."
Through the broken windows, we can already hear it starting.
Howling. Roaring. The sound of creatures that have hidden in the shadows for ages, now coming into the light.
All of them angry. All of them scared.
All of them coming here.
Sarah looks up from fixing Aria, her face grave. "We need to flee the city. Now."
"It's too late," Alexander says softly. "They're already here."
And as if to prove his point, the building shakes as something huge lands on the roof above us.
Something that sounds like it has wings.
