Chapter 100 He Claims He Doesn't Care About Her
Inside the hospital room.
Emily approached step by step until she reached the bedside, looking up at Grace who was connected to an IV drip.
She extended her hand, while simultaneously making small movements with her other hand hidden in her sleeve, quietly removing the cap from the syringe.
"What are you doing."
From the doorway came Alexander's ice-cold interrogation.
Emily jumped in fright, spinning around to see him with her face pale as a sheet.
Alexander stood in the doorway, staring at her expressionlessly.
Emily felt a chill under his gaze, her heart racing with panic, but quickly she composed herself and asked, "Alexander, what are you doing here?"
Alexander entered the room and came to the bedside, glancing at Grace.
Emily immediately hid the syringe and asked, "Have you been here watching over her this whole time?"
Alexander nodded.
Emily laughed incredulously. "That's not necessary, is it? Didn't the doctor say she's out of immediate danger? You don't need to keep vigil over her like this."
Alexander countered, "Didn't I have the driver take you home? Why didn't you go?"
Emily replied, "I was worried about her, so I came to check on her."
Alexander raised an eyebrow, somewhat puzzled. "Why would you be worried about her?"
Emily was momentarily at a loss for words. "After all, it's a matter of life and death... I wanted to see how she was doing."
Alexander said flatly, "She doesn't need your concern."
Emily's heart skipped a beat. For some reason, those words stung.
She asked, "Then what about you? Why do you care so much about her?"
Alexander replied, "She's the most important person to Liam."
"Is it really just because of Liam?" Emily pressed, feeling uneasy. "Since the doctor said she's out of immediate danger, why don't you stop worrying about her?"
Alexander looked at Grace's bloodless face and said quietly, "She hasn't woken up yet. The doctor only said she was initially out of immediate danger, but she hasn't passed through the critical period."
Emily said, "Alexander, let me stay and take care of her. You should go home."
Alexander looked at Emily, his indifferent eyes carrying an unfathomable undercurrent. "No need."
Emily walked over and gently grasped his arm, saying tenderly, "Alexander, you've never been one to take care of people. Since childhood, others have always served you—I've never seen you take care of anyone else."
Alexander cut her off. "Don't make noise."
Emily was completely stunned.
So cold, so heartless.
Alexander gently removed her hand and said to her, "This is a private room with dedicated nursing staff. You should leave."
With that, he took her hand and led her outside the room, closing the door behind them.
Emily looked through the small window in the door at Grace lying on the bed, unwillingly asking, "Has she woken up at all?"
Alexander sat down on the bench. "No." Until now, Grace hadn't regained consciousness, remaining in a comatose state.
Liam and Max were sleeping in the adjacent family room. He had been watching over them for a while when he heard footsteps, thinking Grace had awakened and the nurse was coming to check on her. He never expected it would be Emily.
Since Alexander wouldn't leave, Emily didn't dare leave either. She was worried that the moment she left, Grace would wake up and identify her as the one who pushed her off the platform, leaving her no chance to explain.
Emily sat down beside him, saying somewhat dejectedly, "Alexander, why are you so good to her? I've never seen you take such meticulous care of anyone. Why go to such lengths? She accidentally fell off the platform herself and got hurt like this—it's not your responsibility, and you have no obligation to keep a 24-hour bedside vigil... This makes me feel like your heart isn't with me anymore."
She looked up, her eyes flickering. "You haven't developed feelings for her, have you?"
Alexander frowned. "What feelings?"
Emily clarified, "Romantic feelings between a man and woman. Do you have them?"
Alexander said coldly, "No." How could he possibly develop feelings for Grace?
Although when he saw her lying in that pool of blood, his heart had indeed felt as if it were being pierced by a sharp blade.
Emily muttered to herself, "I wonder how she could fall for no reason? It was so sudden."
Alexander thought for a moment. "She has night blindness."
Although Grace had never mentioned this, Alexander had keenly picked up on this detail. At night, especially in dark places, she couldn't see clearly—perhaps she had accidentally walked to that spot and fallen.
Emily said absentmindedly, "Thank goodness the emergency treatment was effective." She gritted her teeth.
With Alexander staying put, never leaving her side, she had no opportunity to act. Once Grace woke up, she'd lose her chance completely.
She could see the fatigue on Alexander's face, so she tried persuading him once more. "You should go home."
Alexander closed his eyes. "I won't leave until she wakes up."
Emily's eyes widened.
Alexander said each word deliberately, "I will watch over her until she regains consciousness."
Emily became increasingly restless.
Suddenly, Grace's voice came from the room.
"It hurts..."
Alexander reacted immediately, standing abruptly and pushing open the door. Coming to the bedside, he saw that Grace was covered in cold sweat. She seemed to have regained some consciousness but was still confused, yet in such pain that she was drenched in sweat. "It hurts."
The man leaned down, asking softly, "Where does it hurt?"
Grace seemed unable to hear him speaking. With her eyes tightly closed, lacking even the strength to bite her lip, she only mumbled incoherently, "Pain... pain..."
Alexander felt his chest tighten. He reached up and pressed the call button.
Soon after, a nurse hurried in.
"Mr. Hayes, has Ms. Foster awakened?"
Alexander said, "Come here, she says she's in pain."
The nurse came to the bedside, checked the monitors, and examined her, then shook her head. "She's not fully conscious yet, but she's regained some awareness. When she says it hurts, it's probably because the anesthesia has worn off."
After all, with multiple fractures throughout her body and traumatic brain injury, once the anesthesia wore off, she was literally awakened by the pain.
Alexander said, "She's in severe pain. Is there any way to stop her pain?"
As soon as he finished speaking, Grace's hand fumbled to grab his sleeve.
Alexander looked down to see her hand gripping his sleeve tightly. He grasped her hand in return.
Her hand was so small—his one hand could completely enclose hers.
Alexander sat down by the bedside. "Grace?" He called her name softly.
But she still showed no response.
The nurse said, "I'll give her a pain injection to try."
Alexander nodded. "Okay." His gaze never left Grace's face throughout, as if every subtle expression on her face couldn't escape his eyes.
Outside the door, Emily watched this scene, feeling sour inside.
He still claimed he didn't care about her.
