Chapter 41
The drive from the airport to my house was a blur of thoughts and emotions. I couldn't help but replay the chaotic scene I had witnessed on the television screen over and over in my mind. Julliette's face, filled with embarrassment and frustration, haunted me, and my concern for her safety grew with each passing mile.
The tires of my car screeched against the driveway as I pulled into my mansion's driveway. The grand facade that had always felt like a fortress now seemed hollow and empty. I rushed out of the car, a sense of urgency gripping me, and stormed inside, my heart pounding in my chest.
The house was eerily silent, devoid of any signs of life. I called out Julliette's name, my voice echoing through the spacious halls, but there was no response. Panic began to claw at the edges of my composure, and I knew I needed to find her, to make sure she was safe.
My mansion loomed large as I moved from room to room, calling out for Julliette. Its grandeur was evident in the spacious halls, high ceilings, and opulent furnishings that spoke of wealth and luxury. Each room was a testament to extravagance, from the marble floors to the intricate chandeliers that hung from above. As I traversed the labyrinthine corridors, the sheer size of the house became apparent, a sprawling maze of rooms and secrets. Yet, in the midst of its grandiosity, Julliette's absence left an emptiness that echoed through its vastness, a reminder that even in this palace of wealth, something precious was missing.
I ascended the staircase, the polished marble steps cold beneath my feet. The door to the room where Julliette had slept the night before stood slightly ajar. I pushed it open, my eyes scanning the familiar surroundings, but all I found were the clothes she had left behind.
My heart sank as I realized that she had disappeared, leaving no trace of her whereabouts. A mix of worry and frustration washed over me. I had hoped to find her here, to give her a stern talking-to about the dangers of disobeying my orders. But now, I was faced with an unsettling mystery.
I muttered to myself, a hint of frustration tainting my voice. "I guess I'll have to go to her house."
I quickly retraced my steps, returning to my car, and brought the engine to life. The tires squealed as I sped away from my mansion, heading towards Julliette's house.
As I drove through the winding streets of Paris, my eyes scanned the bustling roads with a flicker of hope, a silent prayer that I might catch a glimpse of Julliette among the bustling crowd. Every passerby became a potential sighting, every shadow a possibility. The city's vibrant energy seemed to echo my urgency, and the streets whispered with the possibility of a chance encounter. But as the minutes turned into hours, the reality of her disappearance weighed heavy on my heart, and the hope I had clung to began to wane.
The drive to Julliette's house was a frantic rush against the ticking clock of my worry. My mind raced with a hundred different scenarios, each more unsettling than the last. I couldn't shake the feeling that something had gone terribly wrong, and the uncertainty gnawed at me with every passing second.
I pulled up to her house, the tires skidding against the pavement as I parked haphazardly. My heart pounded in my chest as I sprinted to the front door, determination etched across my face. I rang the doorbell, the shrill sound echoing through the quiet neighborhood.
Seconds felt like an eternity until the door slowly swung open, revealing a middle-aged woman with tired eyes and a hasty smile.
"Good evening…sir," she greeted me, her voice tinged with an air of unease.
The maid, a middle-aged woman, stood with her short hair falling down behind her ears, framing a face that bore the gentle creases of age. She was of shorter stature, her demeanor carrying an air of meekness that belied the secrets that seemed to linger in her gaze. Her tired eyes held a hint of weariness, as if she had seen and heard much within the walls of the Wayne family home. Despite her unassuming appearance, there was an undeniable sense that she was far more than she appeared to be, and I couldn't shake the feeling that she held key pieces of the puzzle I was determined to solve.
I tried to keep my composure, but the worry gnawed at me like a persistent itch. "Hello ma'am, where's Julliette? Is she home?"
Her smile remained, but there was something in her eyes, a flicker of hesitation that caught my attention. "I'm afraid Miss Wayne is no longer here, sir."
The shock of her words reverberated through me, but I couldn't afford to show weakness now. Instead, I raised an eyebrow, my voice carefully controlled. "Moved out? Without any notice?"
She nodded, her gaze shifting slightly as she avoided my eyes. "Yes, Mr. Adams. She left a few days ago, said she needed a change of scenery."
Her words struck me like lightening
She's obviously lying
Something's definitely up,her lies were far fetched she obviously knows something I don't
"But where did she go?" I pressed, my voice tight with concern.
She hesitated once more, and this time, her eyes met mine, revealing a hint of sadness. "I'm sorry sir, but Miss Wayne didn't confide in me about her plans. She simply packed her bags and left."
Whoever this woman is she is definitely good at this.
I stare into her facial features to see if I can get a form of give away,my eyes skillfully travel from her sturdy eye contact to her poised smile but then it lands on her gulping neck.
Bingo
A smile appears on my face and I recompose my stance.
I decided to play the game, to see if I could extract more information from the enigmatic maid. With a calm and composed demeanor, I lied, "Well, Juliette called me a few hours ago to come pick her up. We were supposed to go on a date."
The maid's expression shifted for a mere second, her eyes widening in surprise before she quickly masked it with a laugh. "Oh sir, you got me there! I was just joking. Miss Wayne did mention something about a date earlier, and she went to get her hair done."
Her response intrigued me. It seemed like she had let her guard down for a brief moment before composing herself. There was definitely more to this situation than met the eye, and I needed to tread carefully to uncover the truth.
I maintained my calm facade, nodding as if I had taken her words at face value. "I see. Well, thank you for letting me know. I'll catch up with Julliette later then."
The maid's smile returned, her eyes returning to their previous weariness. "Of course sir,If you need anything else, don't hesitate to ask."
As I turned away from the door, my mind raced with questions. Why had Julliette left without a word? What was the real reason behind her abrupt departure? And most importantly, was she safe?
Back in my car, I knew that I needed to dig deeper into this mystery. The maid's reaction had confirmed my suspicions that something was amiss, and I couldn't simply accept her explanation at face value.
I got into my car, my mind swirling with questions and uncertainties. Julliette's sudden departure and the maid's cryptic behavior had left me with an unsettling feeling. As I started the engine and prepared to drive away, a thought nagged at me. I couldn't simply let this mystery go.
With a quick glance in the rearview mirror, I saw the maid still standing by the door, her gaze fixed on me. It was as if she was watching my every move with a keen, unwavering eye.
I decided to play a little game of my own. I pretended to drive away, pulling out onto the quiet street and heading in the opposite direction from Julliette's house. I watched the rearview mirror closely, my heart pounding with anticipation.
As I checked my rearview mirror, my intent was to capture a glimpse of the maid, hoping to glean some clue from her actions. However, when our eyes met through the reflection, it was her suspicious gaze that met mine. Her eyes bore into mine with a questioning intensity that sent a shiver down my spine. It was clear she was not as meek as she appeared, and her suspicions were now laid bare for both of us to see.
I pretend to check my reflection and then look away with the intent to make it seem like I was looking for my keys.
I checked the mirror again and sure enough, after a few moments, I saw the maid in the mirror. She closed the door to Julliette's house and began to walk away, her steps slow and deliberate. It was as if she believed I had left, as if she had no reason to suspect that I was still watching.
As I continued to drive, I couldn't help but feel a sense of unease. The pieces of this puzzle were scattered, and I was determined to put them together. Julliette's safety depended on it, and I couldn't afford to let anything slip through the cracks.
I decided to circle back, taking a different route that would bring me closer to Julliette's house without arousing suspicion. With each passing minute, my determination grew. I needed to find out what the maid knew, what secrets she was guarding, and how it was connected to Julliette's disappearance.
As I approached Julliette's house once again, I parked my car at a discreet distance, out of sight. I watched from a hidden vantage point, my eyes trained on the house and the enigmatic maid who had become the center of this unfolding mystery.
The waiting game had begun, and I was prepared to play it until I uncovered the truth, no matter where it led.
