Chapter 28 Thyago's Dream
"How about you? You once told me you wanted to be a lawyer, what happen to that dream of yours?" She suddenly asked out of curiosity.
He got stunned for a while and stare at him with a surprised look. He pulled out a frustrated sigh and stared blankly from afar. He went silent for a moment and that worried her. Did he offend him? She just hope she did not ruin his mood by asking that part of him. Well, even she hated him before, she thought him being the successor of their family business reason why she have questions about his dream of becoming a lawyer.
"I took up Business Administration Degree then took up short courses in Real Estate and so as Luxury Management. I never had a chance to fulfill my dream to become a lawyer." He sadly stated as his eyes went blank looking from afar.
"I'm sorry... " she stated. So that's it, he never had a chance even to study the course he dreamt of. It must be hard for him she thought. He was still the same Thyago who is willing to sacrifice his dream just to please his parents and family.
"That's alright. My parents expected me to run the family business, you see I was the only child so I'm the only one they can rely on to handle all of our businesses. Law is not for me, I've accepted that fact a long time ago." He sadly stated.
"Does your parents knew? I mean, haven't you tried telling them that you wanted to take up law?" She suddenly asked. Now she was the one agitated to know about his story.
"No. I can't disappoint them. I know if I told them, they will surely support me but then at the end of it all, it will still break their heart and I don't want that to happen. My Dad had been long time wanting to retire in politics and my Mom has no interest in administering Granpa's business and they are expecting me to take over the full administration of all of our businesses. They raised me knowing I was the successor and the only person who'll handle the Williams and Gonzales wealth. They have always been very vocal about it. I can't bear to disappoint them knowing they rely on me. After all, I learn to like what I do now." There was a tinge of sadness in his voice. Sympathy for him suddenly filled her and it feels like she have this urge to make him happy and take away the sadness he feels.
"But you know what? Many will surely love to be in your shoes." She commented.
"I know I'm very lucky. I'm so blessed with too much and I'm thankful for that but to tell you the truth, it was not that easy being me. Yes, you're being served with a golden spoon and you could probably get whatever material stuff you want but you see you always need to be careful in every action you make together with their consequences. Well, as like my Mom always says, I'm carrying and represents the name Gonzales and Williams so I have to value and take good care of it. Meaning I don't have the right to make mistakes and should always portray perfection which is totally a shit! My kin have worked hard to gain the wealth and respect that resembles our name so it's the main rule in our family to not taint it."
Her heart went to him. She never thought beyond that confident facade look of him is a lonely individual. He was strong because he have to, that was what he was taught to. Oh, it's really hard living in a rich family, she guessed. She was thankful he lived a simple life with her father and she was free to do anything she wants to.
"Powerful, that's the Gonzales and Williams resembles according to the write-up I read in some business magazine and knowing you bear that two powerful family names? Your name does not rule politics but also the business world so the connections and power you got are a very wide range." She frankly stated. She saw him smiled bitterly as he took a glance at her.
Oh, how I hate seeing him this way... Makes me wanna pull him for a hug and comfort him. Damn it, what am I thinking!!!!
"As Spiderman says, great power comes great responsibility." He said it in a snarky way. She laughed with him trying to get off the serious atmosphere that filled them.
There's this man who almost has it all. Wealth, intelligence, good looks, known and respected family background, and success, yet he was still lonely and unhappy. She was wrong when she once judged him that he was arrogant and so full of himself. He's a good person, she knew it. A loving son who's willing to give up his dream for the sake of the people he loves.
"Won't you mind if I ask you what is the greatest dream of a Thyago Williams?" She couldn't help herself to ask then.
He went silent for a moment then stare blankly from afar again. She has thoughts that he might be having hesitations answering her question so she never expected that he would answer her though...
"It's okay if you don't wanna answer it. I mean that's too personal and-- "
"My greatest dream? I just want a simple home, not too huge but not too small as well. A loving wife, a stable job enough to provide for my family and children of my own. Maybe three to four children. You see I was an only child so I wanted a huge family." That answer of Thyago really surprised her. Is he for real? She wondered.
Who could have thought that a Thyago Williams's greatest dream is just that too simple? He was humble she must say and that really amazed her. Well, that's what a typical man's dream but knowing Thyago, she never thought he has that simple dream.
"Are you kidding me? That was so humble of you... " she replied sincerely.
"Humble? That's not the words I wanna hear from you when I share you my greatest dream." He seriously stated and by the looks on his face, he seemed upset and sad.
For what reason, anyway?
"A Thyago Williams can probably get that dream in just a flick of a finger." She tried to uplift his moods by saying those words.
What is odd about his reaction is when he turned to her and looked straight into her eyes and said:
"Only if I could get that loving wife I'm dreaming of for she seemed to be into somebody's arms."
That bitter-sweet word hits her. She could feel the sadness and the pain in his voice and she couldn't help to feel sympathy for him.
So he was in love with a girl who seemed impossible for him to have. Who could be that girl? Is it the same girl why he loves seafood, she thought. A strange not so good feeling suddenly crept inside her just thinking about the girl. Why is suddenly it so hard for her to breathe after hearing that?
"I-I think, we should get back to the building. My one-hour break time is almost done." She make an alibi and pretended to look at her wristwatch then.
Their conversation suddenly made her uncomfortable. She saw him smiled bitterly afterward before he helped her stand on her seat and together they left the place to go back to the building.
