Chapter 1: Questions Finally Got Answered

FIVE YEARS—I've been married to my husband Finn for five years, but we still haven't been blessed with a child. We've been trying so hard in the past few years, but we have been unfortunate. We already went to different doctors who are also acquaintances of Finn to make our situation confidential because he supposedly has a reputation to protect.

According to them, there was no problem with us both. Many people suggested a method for us to conceive with the help of science, which at first was okay, but Finn, later on, withdrew from that plan because he said it would cost too much and we would just waste our time if we devoted ourselves to it.

That was absolutely true because of so many procedures and doctor appointments we needed to attend.

He told me we should just try a natural way again and wait. We're both healthy, but maybe there is a right time for everything and we should just wait for that. I understand his frustration. As an only child, my in-laws are pressuring us to have a baby as soon as possible. Well, there was more pressure from his dad, who had been wanting a grandchild for so long.

Me too, I'm an only child but my parents never rushed me, but this past month I noticed a change with Finn. When I asked him if there was a problem, he told me there wasn’t, and because of that—I thought we were okay, but we were not.

Because he didn't want to tell me what the problem was, I hired an agent to spy on him. I know it's too much, but I don't feel comfortable just avoiding him. He always makes himself busy with work and we hardly talk or sleep next to each other and last night, he came home. I tried to be sweet because I missed him a lot. I miss his smell, and his touch, but he made an excuse that he was tired. He didn't even kiss me to say good night.

I fell asleep with a heavy heart. That wasn't the first time he had done that, and I was even more shocked that something was going on behind my back.

I woke up, and he was about to leave. He had already taken a bath and his perfume smelled all over our room, as if he had used up an entire bottle on his body that morning. He used a different perfume as well. Not the perfume that he knew I liked because the smell is not strong and does not hurt too much in the nose.

"Where are you going so early? How about we have breakfast together first before you leave?" I asked because I'm always the only one eating at the table because he was often not at home.

"I'm in a hurry right now. I'm going on a business trip. Let's eat outside once I come back," he answered without even turning his head in my direction and continued putting on his necktie.

"But you just came—" I wanted to protest, but I suddenly changed my mind. I already knew where that could lead—to an argument.

"O-Okay," I answered sluggishly, even though deep inside my heart it hurt and felt like squeezing because once again, I was rejected by my husband, who doesn't have time for me anymore.

He left the room without even kissing me or saying goodbye like before. I noticed he left the other things that he usually brought when he had a business-related trip. I couldn’t stop myself from doubting it. I just peeked at his car from the window of our room and stayed there until I could no longer see it.

I went straight to the bathroom to take a shower and get ready to go to the same office that day. I work for the same company—his family's company. We're in the same field. We're both civil engineers, that’s why we got along easily the first day we met. But our interests were so alike, but it seems right now his interest has already changed.

I tried to forget my suspicion, but it was bothering me and when I couldn't bear it any longer, I immediately called his secretary even though I was also going to the same place that day.

My question couldn’t wait any longer. I just wanted to confirm something, but before that, I just had to bribe his secretary to get the information I needed.

"Hello, Lucy! Good morning! Can you please order me a coffee? Order yourself too, my treat!"

"Sure, ma'am!" she answered enthusiastically from the other line. I was hoping she wouldn’t doubt that because I have my secretary to ask for the same favor.

"Thank you! By the way, can you please check my husband's schedule today? He just came back home. I'm planning to prepare an early dinner for us both, but I'm not sure if it would be possible with his hectic schedule lately," I lied.

"About that, ma'am—Sir Finn canceled all his engagements today, so your plans could be possible," his secretary answered politely. She sounded more excited by my alibi.

"Oh my! That would be great then! Thanks, Lucy! Is he there?" A grin was already forming on my lips right after hearing what my husband did that day. Something he stopped doing for me.

"Sir Finn hasn't arrived yet, ma'am," she answered quickly, and my lips parted because the company was not far away and the traffic here in England is not like in the Philippines, so he would arrive quickly.

"Okay, Lucy. Thanks again!"

"No worries, ma'am," she said, and I ended the call.

I dialed another number, which was immediately answered by the owner.

"It seems my husband is going somewhere today. I want you to follow him. He's alone and using the black car," I ordered.

"Right away, ma'am," he answered immediately, without question.

After I talked to him, I checked the time on my cellular phone and finished preparing to leave. I planned to go to the office, but I was having second thoughts about it.

I took a seat in the single-seater chair. Sitting there and staring blankly at the king-size bed that I fixed earlier. I was slowly tapping one of my fingers on the armrest while waiting for an update.

A few minutes passed. I heard the message tone on my phone and immediately checked who sent it. It was from the person I hired and, according to him, my husband was in a coffee shop with a woman.

I sent a reply right away. Asking him to send me a picture of my husband and the person he was with and later on, I received it. He sent me five pictures from different angles.

He quickly found Finn because of the tracking device I put in his car. The agent gave me that device for future purposes and I didn't think we could benefit from it now.

I know who is with him. She's a so-called friend. I don't want to give malice to their meeting, but there's something off about them in those pictures.

I told him to follow them and update me about what they were doing. I remained sitting, thinking about whether I should go to the office. The day felt frustrating even though nothing was happening yet.

A few more minutes passed. I waited for an update on what was happening there. Nervousness was eating me up as the minutes passed. Huddled and restless, like my instinct was telling me, there was something absurd going on already—and here it is. Another message came, and those contained pictures.

I wasn't prepared to see any of those. My world was shaken in an instant as my knees trembled. Finn and Diane were too close, not just close. They were kissing, and they were still in the parking area of the famous coffee shop. If anyone sees them, the first thing that will come to mind is that they look like long-lost lovers who miss each other so much.

They were making out in public without fear and they seemed to miss each other!

Where is the Finn who has a reputation to protect and is afraid of ruining?

In their looks, they are like hungry animals who can't wait to relieve the longing they were feeling for each other. Finn and I never did that in public— it’s not that I'm jealous. It's just that my parents didn't raise me like that—no breeding.

Never in my entire life, I would do such a thing. Even with my husband and the person—I love so much.
